Stand out tracks:
Black Sunday
I wrote the lyrics to Black Sunday just before I went on tour, which is the sort of sound it has, although I tried to write it in the kind of way that anybody would feel if they were going off to work and always wondering if, when they come back, they will find things the way they left them. It is just full of the kind of images that I see when I travel. IA
Crossfire
With the song Crossfire I had the title with some idea about the lyrics and we were actually rehearsing the track when my wife Shona came rushing in and said that the Iranian Embassy in London had been besieged. We all stopped rehearsing and came to watch it on the television. Then the next morning before the others arrived for rehearsal I wrote all the lyrics. So although it was kind of aimed in that direction anyway, when this particular thing happened on the news I filled in the missing words. IA

(It may have been mentioned elsewhere, but then I haven't seen it, so forgive me for asking, if that is so.) It's a magnificent track - as is the opening one you mention - and 'Fylingdale' - and 'Another Working...' Jings! I better stop there and go fetch it out to play right now!

I can see where you're coming from regarding the John Betjeman idea but I don't remember IA ever being asked about this although I would expect that he would have read the great man's poems at some stage. Tomorrow is the one day I would change for a Monday with freezing rains melting and no trains running and sad eyes passing in windows flimsy and my seat rocking from legs not quite matching Got passport, credit cards, a plane that I'm catching Black Sunday falls one day too soon
The taxi that takes me will be moving too quickly My suitcases simply too full for the closing of pants, shirts and kisses all packed in a hurry Two best-selling paper backs chosen at random --- no sign of sales-persons to whom I might hand them Black Sunday falls one day too soon
And down at the airport are probably waiting a few thousand passengers, overbooked seating Time long suspended in transit-lounge traumas --- connections broken and Special Branch waiting conspicuously standing in holiday clothing Black Sunday falls one day too soon
Pick up my feet and kick off my lethargy Down to the gate with the old mood upon me Get out and chase the small immortality born in the minute of my next returning Impatient feet tapping and cigarette burning Homecoming one day too soon
And back at the house there's a grey sky a-tumbling Milk bottles piling on door steps a-crumbling Curtains all drawn and cold water plumbing Notepaper scribbles I read unbelieving Saying how sorry, how sad was the leaving ...one day too soon It certainly contains the John Betjeman themes of the ordinary things in life coupled with more mundane things such as the weather, waiting for things to happen and such like.

Why? A should be mated with WITL and UW as Tull's cool 80's prog era (BATB doesn't quite fit in).....all three albums never get old as you hear Ian and the band experimenting with cool sounds, background cascades, blips and bleats, grunts and groans, hics and hups and altogether amazing, Tull-only music. Ian at his songwriting, musical and singing best....A thowaway song like 'Tundra' has more imagination and experimentation than most bands manage in a career...and I'm being objective !

Stitch in Time = Twitch in Slime. ian was a bit bored and tired during Stormwatch tour...lot's of stress...Glasscock illness and passing, dissent in the ranks, Tull touring into the teeth of punk eating it's prog parents...For 'A' he was on fire...Jobson inspired him and he sang and played his heart out.

My first, snippet impression of 'Banker Bets' was that it had a little riffage from 'Twitch in Slime'.

What did you think of the difference between the Stormwatch concert and the A show JTull07? Based on the videos I have seen from both tours as well as audio recordings, the change in imagery and style was quite dramatic. I believe Ian wanted to give Tull a new look as well as new members who had such talent. I loved the "Dark Ages" of Tull in the late 70's, but 1980 was the dawn of a new era. With synthesizers and wireless equipment he stayed ahead of most 'Old' Rockers by recreating himself. The uniforms were somewhat like DEVO, yet the music was still as great as ever. ;D I really loved the "A" lighting design too. Incredible to see that hanging and moving above the stage.

No doubt, taking account band members, stage style and Ian's attitude, the divide between Stormwatch, the last hurrah of the John Evan band alumni...and 'A'...the first Ian Anderson band with hired guns, yes-special status for M. Barre, was huge.

Off topic much? 'Twitch in Slime' (cringe) making me ill. My first, snippet impression of 'Banker Bets' was that it had a little riffage from 'Twitch in Slime'. That's cool, as long as you love them both equally, eh. I remain disarmed... you don't see what I don't say. too easy My 'A' mix: A BETTER MOON A CHANGE OF HORSES A GIFT OF ROSES A HAND OF THUMBS A NEW DAY YESTERDAY A PASSION PLAY A RAFT OF PENGUINS A SMALL CIGAR A SONG FOR JEFFREY A STITCH IN TIME A TIME FOR EVERYTHING A WEEK OF MOMENTS A WINTER SNOWSCAPE [Instr.] Hey twitch, Whatever happened to R E S P E C T ? Love these lyrics: I work in dark factories - a cog in the big wheel driving grey satanic mills and weaving sad stories. And faceless masters - oh, they pay me plenty - crumbs from their luncheon packs, harsh wine from bottles half empty. - Ian Anderson ;D My only hate = A SMALL CIGAR...lyrics only...get those Mangos songs away from me, too.

Certainly a tour that delivered when less was expected from me than normal. For all the cringing that past costuming have provided, that tour stands out as the single worst, like trying to recover some of the fans from Gary Numan, or trying to remain au currant with that ever so bad seed that was popular music developments of the late 70's and early 80's. So futuristic. But on the whole, measured against the rest of their catalogue, an album that earned its space in the, not so much the bottom third to quarter of A Passion Play, but the bottom 10 per cent, alongside the record with David Palmer, War Child and Minstrel in the Gallery, maybe Catfish too. Somebody's got to be in last place and those are mine. 4WD? no. Crossfire? no. Working John Working Joe. Nope, that won't work either. Obviously Black Sunday and Pine Marten's excepted. Finally not one of Tulls finest hours. Having said that, near as I can surmise, IA should have zero guilt for the departure's of 3 individuals we would have preferred stay, but maybe Martin can change my mind with his alleged upcoming biography which will necessarily contain alot of perceptions of the man who made him rich and famous. They had best be dead center and right on time Martin.
