Speaking to Times Out ahead of their latest tour, frontman and flautist Ian Anderson is determined not to replace his instrument with a golf club or fishing rod. He said: "We keep going, keep active. As soon as you stop touring and producing more work you slow down and start looking at playing golf and fishing. "I'm certainly not ready for that." The group, who have produced more than 30 albums and racked up 50 million sales, is appearing at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon, on March 19. Anderson, one of only two of the original members, said audiences could expect an eclectic mix of classics lesser known tunes and be treated to a selection of yet to be recorded new material. "The line-up does vary from the start of the tour to the finish. You tailor it to whether it is an indoor venue or outdoors, standing or sitting. You don't want the same set list for a small seated concert hall and an open air arena," he said. Formed at the end of the '60s Jethro Tull made a name for themselves producing music inspired by blues and jazz. Over the years, leading to their peak in the mid-'70s, their sound changed to incorporate folk, classical and rock influences. Perhaps unsurprisingly the make-up of the band has changed over the past four decade, but Anderson and lead guitarist Martin Barre remain, joined by Doane Perry, veteran Tull drummer of some 24 years experience, John O'Hara on piano and accordion and David Goodier on bass guitar. Joining the group on a tour which begins in the UK before moving on to Scandinavia, North America, Greece and Israel, is French artists Saori Jo. "We met in Germany last year and we'll be jumping on stage to perform with them on a couple of occasions," said Anderson. * Tickets for the show, cost £25.50 and £28.50. ian seems to have written a few songs lately....good ones in fact...I'm starting to think the problem is he just can't find a way to get over the inevitable downloading and more or less free distribution of music after all his years as an album release guy expecting his royalties and publishing pennies for each unit sold...it's a shame that the evolution of the music business seems to be such a barrier for Ian to compromise with...I bet there are a lot of songs and half finished songs lying around his studio....probably many beyond his attention span interest by now....cuz he just can't stomach the new realities and for him it feels like free work.

Okay...I confess...Ian pays me to make excuses for him....but it ain't much...so when my little one and I make it to Sacto, Sal...we can only take you and Mr Sal to a moderate place like Chuck E Cheese or....Scottish cuisine to honor the pittance I get from Ian ( McDonalds).

Ash, you clearly don't get it, I don't think we "dislike" Ian, speaking for myself I don't even know the man, only the persona he pushes out for his "fans". I'd be keen to see where you picked out the word "dislike" though from my posts. And as for the new songs, have they been released yet, or did you hear them through an illegal download, possibly one of the reasons why Ian doesn't do much recording these days? I chucked the old forum because of the snide comments about people who simply had voiced an honest opinion and longed for a different approach to where the band seemed to be heading.....and of course the nutters....and I'm on this forum because I thought when col set it up we'd have a balanced bunch of people open to reasoned discussion, maybe I was wrong.

OK may be dislike is too strong but it does get a bit boring hearing the same old where are the new songs I want a new album as much as the next man ;D You can hear all of those songs on youtube . I don't download illegal music! I was not picking on you but on a general vibe I pick up when people talk about Ian. If it wasn't for this genius there would be no Tull

I also fully understand the frustration with Tull . I agree with many of the comments about their current lack of recording ambition and other issues raised, but as each tour goes on I feel that this might just be the last time. Consequently I am seeing three shows .... Manchester , Liverpool and Sheffield. Will be about the 60th time I have seen them .I hope that they play the two new pieces that were played in Ians solo tour ... as well as anything else new. Will post reviews

Unfortunately Ian's solo tour didn't work out with my shifts, and lack of a London date meant I couldn't get to any, so I too hope to hear the new stuff too.

I'll try and get an objective review of the Oxford show on here early Sunday, hopefully with photo(s) - unless Ash beats me to it. Thanks. For those non-attendees on this tour all info will be welcome. Tull didn't venture as far west as Cornwall this time around and work shifts meant I couldn't travel to the nearest venue. AN OPEN MEMO TO THE JETHRO TULL MANAGEMENT TEAMHi All Just to remind you that we here in Cornwall and the western piece of Devon have some excellent venues that Jethro Tull would just love to perform at. The Plymouth Pavilions you already know as you played there in 2004. Spacious, relaxing, en-suite bathroom and toilet in the dressing rooms etc. etc. Another excellent venue down here in the south-west is The Hall For Cornwall in Truro. Again excellent dressing room facilities and I think I remember Fairport Convention have played there so Dave Pegg can tell you all about their catering facilities and bar. If a more intimate venue is required, The Wharf at Tavistock comes highly recommended. Holds 400 standing or 200 sitting and it would be a fine place to perform in on one of those "solo" tours that Ian is so fond of. For one off performances of any "solo" tours at Tavistock, Mrs Maddog has said that Ian can stay in our spare room after the concert if so desired and that full English breakfast will be provided on the understanding that Maddog gets a lift back from the venue as he mustn't drive. Aso our polydactyl (exrtra toes) black cat Benji would have the great pleasure of keeping your company should you stay here. One proviso is that you are willing to get up at three in the morning to feed the little b****r. I hope and trust this information has been of interest and that you have noted these venues in the tour diary for 2011. Regards Maddogfagin

Yes and another open memo to management if I may..
Newest venue in Dublin, the 2,000 seater Grand Canal Theatre, perfect for that overdue Irish gig.. it's been ten years since their last tour here. Horslips, a Celtic Rock/Folk reformed band filled the 12, 000 seater O2 Arena, formerly The Point in December of last year.
And this time we promise not to tear coats or steal flutes !!

The Grand Canal theatre looks very nice and I see you've got Paul Brady and Ray Davies appearing there as well as the Ronan boy It would be an excellent spot for the Irish visit as would The Hall for Truro - which I know well, for Cornwall and a bit of Devon if they were willing to cross the border ;D Mind you if they make the effort to come over to Ireland they are very welcome in Fermanagh - a bit of fishing and boating and an outdoor concert on the Lough - if it's not raining i47.images obliterated by tinypic/2hczuo2.jpg[/IMG] I'll away and start building a Minack.

And another venue request from me........Victoria Park London.....preferably 24th or 25th July......how brilliant would it be to see Tull on a bill with ELP, Marillion, Steve Hackett, Transatlantic, Asia, Uriah Heep,Magnum, Focus, Pendragon, Wishbone Ash, The Reasoning, Touchstone blah blah blah? (the list goes on!) Tull would just fit in so well here and it's a big festival with heavy rock stages with big name bands too so it should also be a big audience. www.highvoltagefestival.com/

Perhaps a benefit concert here at Maddog Mansions to celebrate my 65th in 3 years time. All forum members invited of course with free beer and food, including a pasty or two, and the first playing of the band's new album in 2013 which follows the one they issued late in 2010. Oh, I've been dreaming

Hello. Apologies for not popping in as much as I should but I do keep up to date with the comings and goings on the board. Pretty entertaining lately! Anyway I,m off to Bristol on the 18th and after 70+ shows am still looking forward to it big time. Last time I saw them a few times on the 40th and they were magnificent ( in my top 5 ) Found these reviews ........ reviews.ticketmaster.co.uk/7171-en_gb/735387/jethro-tull-reviews/reviews.htmCheers all from Sunny South Wales

I'm on for that MadDog. Gives the UK fans on this board an oportunity to think about organising another Tull convention. I wonder does anyone agree with me ?

And I only now spotted that Fairport Convention return to Whelans in Dublin this Thursday night. To my great disappointment I am afraid I am going to have to miss it. Great intimate (i.e. on top of the band almost) venue
