And thankfully Martin has the good sense not to get a singer and flute player and go out there playing Tull songs when he's doing solo shows. Well at least when Martin toured the States with Willy Porter they stuck to their own material....

I agree, not good and I don't know why MB agreed to do those songs live. I've been told he is quite a perfectionist as far as a performance goes so I can only think he was having an off day Always thought IMO that Willy Porter was one of Tull's better supporting acts and subsequently have located some of his output on the net and haven't been disappointed.

I have no problem what so ever with Ian playing Tull classics at his solo concerts. In fact it's nice to hear them in a different way rather than the same thing every time you pay to see them play. I love it both ways and it looks like Ian has no problem with Martin doing the same

I love it both ways and it looks like Ian has no problem with Martin doing the same Interesting. I guess as long as the change is for the better, or the new arrangements are at least strong enough to stand on their own then I'm okay with it. But I'm not into change for the sake of something different simply because I'm sick of hearing the same old songs. Unfortunately Ian hasn't been able to convert his music into unplugged versions with any degree of success like Eric Clapton and some others have. It's too bad, because we all know how great he can be in that context. But if I'm to attend an Ian Anderson solo concert I would imagine that I'm going to get that unplugged guy performing both his solo work and Tull acoustic pieces. I personally have no desire to see him try to turn Aqualung into anything other than what it is. And I certainly don't want to pay money to watch some kid playing Martin's parts. At least not at a Tull or Ian Anderson show. That stuff should be reserved for cover bands down at the local watering hole. And incidentally, when Martin played in New York a few years ago he didn't play any Tull. In fact, as Jeff remembers, he actually mentioned the Tull name once that night in a sort of sneering tone. I'm not sure what he was saying, only that it didn't sound like anything too nice. Forgive me for playing devil's advocate....

I'm not really interested in what may or maybe not have been said by Martin on stage. The gutter press do that s**t and your welcome to it, I like facts!

You'll be happy to know the FACT is Jeff (Fatman) and I were both at that show and heard it. Sorry, I didn't make the Barbican show. Too far from home for me. Glad you liked Florian. What's the other kid's name that fills in also? I saw him at an orchestral show a few years back. You shouldn't mistake the soft spot some of us feel for Martin as a slight on these kids. I don't doubt they're very talented - not to mention they work for less. But whatever the case, I just don't have any desire to watch them "play" Martin Barre. I'd rather see the real thing.

Yeah I'm with TM on that. Talented they maybe but there are 1000's of talented Guitarists but there is only one Martin Barre. Over the years, the more I listen to Tull the more I notice Martin's input. The last Tull show I saw confirmed the awesome power of Martin Barre. I just can't see the point in having someone duplicate Martin's work when Martin is still very much active. I guess for some, Ian is Tull but Ian's willingness to bring in a young feller to duplicate Martin's work is another rung in the ladder of naffness that Ian continues to climb. It's right up there with covering your own songs on new albums.

I agree with TM and Mix as well - don't mind special guests contributing with another instrument or additional but not in place of.. Ps On a completely different note here - I'm on housekeeping duties so could we continue, if wished, on this subject but on a new thread. Catfish is getting too much attention

Catfish is getting too much attention No more hijacking allowed? That's cool. I think we beat that horse pretty good. Mix touched on one aspect of this record that I have personally noticed, and that is the mixing and production - it's one of Tull's best. It's a great album to sit back and enjoy with a good set of headphones and your favorite libation. Try it sometime and you'll hear what I mean.

Okay, but somebody lead me to the new thread if there is one. ;D My final two cents on this so that I don't mussy up nonrabbit's housekeeping, is that Ian and Martin are Tull. I love Florian. Think he's wonderful. Love Doane. But have no particular attachment to the new guys, barely got to see Jon and Andy, would have dearly loved to see all the guys who came before them. But....I didn't. I am a self-professed Ian-phile ( no shocks there... ;D). But Tull is not Tull without Martin. It's just Ian and some guys playing Tull. Now. I will always go watch Ian play. Even if he plays Tull stuff without Martin. But it would not be "Tull". And I would miss Martin horribly. I will just sweep up this little mess I made and close the door behind me....

But to add one point which I don't think has been mentioned. What if, for whatever reason, MB decides he doesn't want to play at a certain concert, or series of concerts, which leaves IA with the only option to use Florian Opahle et al. We don't know what goes on in the Tull backroom and probably never will. I will add one personal thought to this thread and that is on the evidence of the Barbican gig and an audio recording of Florian playing with IA, he is his own man. Yes, he does follow MB's basic arrangement but adds his own interpretation to the songs but doesn't "trample" all over them. Whether he intends to or not, he appears to be paying homage to MB's playing rather than attempting to make the songs entirely his own creation. IMO we should be grateful to have Florian "on board" when MB doesn't want to do certain gigs 'coz we could have worse methinks.
