Just noticed that one of Martin's songs on Road Less Traveled, 'And the band played on just for me' There is the line: 'cheap hotel in a seaside town' lifted straight out of 'This is Not Love'. If you are going to borrow, might as well borrow from the best !

Nov 18, 2022 EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH LEGENDARY JETHRO TULL GUITARIST MARTIN BARRE! Martin Barre 'Jethro Tull' Legend Talks Future InnovationsHello once again everyone I’m your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends. Martin Barre the guitarist of Jethro Tull for over 43 years, his sound and playing was a major factor in their success. Album sales have exceeded 60 million units and they continue to be played worldwide, representing an important part of classic rock history. Martin’s guitar playing has earned him a high level of respect and recognition; he was voted 25th best solo ever in the USA and 20th best solo ever in the UK for his playing on ‘Aqualung’. His playing on the album ‘Crest of a Knave’ earned him a Grammy award in 1989. Martin has put together a band to play the “classic” music from the Tull catalogue. His band is a total commitment to give the Tull fans and a broader audience the chance to hear tracks not performed for many years. The band includes top musicians from a similar background. More recently Martin has collaborated with original Tull band members Clive Bunker and Dee Palmer on a tour across America celebrating 50 Years of Jethro Tull!
Please welcome the legendary longtime guitarist with Jethro Tull MARTIN BARRE to Interviewing the Legends …

That first minute and a half was downright touching. It's sad to see that Martin is still hurting. And somewhat aggravating to see that the interviewer seemed to almost be trying to get him to say something bad about Ian. I honestly agree with most of what he said, though I know I might be known as a bit of a Martin Barre apologist on these boards. The two of them did make magic together, and both deserve props in their own rights for their individual incredible talents.

Well this was a bummer to listen to. I totally agree... This is what happens every year since 2011. They WHINE about the name JETHRO TULL as being unworthy for any band without Martin Barre. Whatever is asked or said it becomes total negativity and WHINING
That’s true, but I was saddened more by Martin’s words about his and Ian’s lost musical/personal relationship. I’ve always been less of a puritan about the Tull name and the abscence of Martin, and I still think use of the name and other guitarists is perfeclty valid. At the same time it’s hard not to feel for Martin during this interview. It’s easy for anyone who knows Ian’s ways to imagine the conversation … ”he talked, I listened”… I’m sure Ian thinks he’s doing it right this time, a conversation rather than a letter and headline, but still. Also, since they haven’t really gone into detail on the split, I may have subconsciously been hoping there was something mutual in wanting to split up. But now we find out that it was indeed a unilateral sacking on Ian’s part, Martin would have continued playing if it were up to him. It’s a bit wrenching to think about.

I watched an interview with Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill from Simple Minds. They met when they were kids and now live in Sicily. Jim says that they're like Jack and Victor from Still Game walking over the hills and putting the world to rights.
Then I saw this Martin Barre interview and, it's well, quite the contrast. Musically, Martin should still be playing alongside Ian. I've no idea what Martin's and Ian's personal relationship was like, but it must have had something going for it. I wonder why Ian 'talked' him out and what was the deal.
Anyway, here's a pleasant and funny interlude from two old rockers.

Ive always been a big fan of Martin Barre and his unique style was very much an integral part of Tull and something is/was missing without him. This was hugely obvious when Florian replaced him, because talented as Florian is, he is very much a generic shredder and something was lost ( his string bending during "Budapest" set my teeth on edge). Now IA has Joe , who fits the bill much better, a fabulous folk rock player who has something of Barre in his playing style. In my humble opinion though, that misses the point. It would take much more than Martin to save present day Tull, with IAs wretched vocals plodding tempo ,substandard song writing (by his standards) and a band playing by numbers . Martin himself seems to be pretty clueless left to his own devices and has done himself no favours by turning himself into a Tull tribute act, endlessly touring with a bunch of mates. Better he had broken the Tull link, found himself a powerful rock vocalist and gone off in his own direction. Anderson/Barre worked magic together, something is missing for both now for sure. But nothing lasts forever, I am grateful for the memories of great live shows and the wonderful recorded work from those wonderful days.

I might still be defending the current era/lineup on my deathbed, but I fully agree with you here. The old days are gone and wouldn’t have come back even if was Martin still in the band. (One reason I’m not a Barre puritan is that I honestly don’t find his late-career playing all that great…) And obviously Ian is allowed to play or not play with whoever he wants. I just found the emotion behind Martin’s words quite moving, and it gave me some of that wistfulness for the old days that I usually don’t feel.

... a Tull tribute act, endlessly touring with a bunch of mates. Heh, you just described my dream job! I wonder if Ian now realizes the two of them were better together. It wasn't a friendship, but it was a heckuva partnership, and I'd argue that they might have been better if they stayed together. Maybe they lost a step because of the split. Ach, we'll never know, but we have the history, oh boy do we have the wonderful history in music!

What a great interview. And once again, what a lovely man Martin proves himself to be. Even perhaps putting 'the big split' behind him and talking with genuine affection about the chemistry in the band, Lovely!
