Have to ask Ash to see if he can decipher Mr Tull's grave stone. I'll take along some bleach and a stiff brush

That's no good to have that headstone fading and weathering like that. Deserves a new headstone, put the first one in a building protected.

I'm lead to believe that after all the years since his death that there are now no direct descendants (which is understandable) so no one to maintain the gravestone. At least the headstone is still in existence and hasn't been destroyed or vandalised over the years.

As the man said that visited the site (see link in last post) it's very sad that there isn't more about him. It seems that a memorial stone was placed in the South wall of the knave in St Bartholomews church in 1960. Wonder if it was placed by the last remaining member of the family or by the council?

I will see how time goes tomorrow but my plan is to drive back home from Lower Basildon via Crowmarsh Gifford, Wallingford which is not really much out of my way. A few up to date photos of Mr Tull's house would seem to fit the bill to finish off the day www.oxfordshireblueplaques.org.uk/plaques/tull.html

Stones fans funding geological research?, Traffic fans erecting stoplights?, Cure fans for medical reserach?, Oasis fans putting up desert rest stops?, New Order fans funding right wing candidates?, stop me anytime

Brilliant! Brilliant!knew you wouldn't disappoint Ash !! It's a wonderful thing to see I can't stop smiling- it's so British, so funny to think all these years have past as a Tullfan and there he is playing the flute by the graveside of the inventor of the seed-drill and then into the church hall for tea and scones. Love it

Noticed on the bottom of the headstone, something about "placed" and then "child". I can't really read more of it, perhaps a paper and pencil tracing of it would clear it up, or reading it in person, but if it was placed there by a child of JT's then it should be preserved. I still think that the headstone needs to be conserved by being protected from the elements, seasonal temp/humidity shifts and lichen, and another one put there for general ID purposes. This tour should cause a few more people to visit the site and why not, JT did some generous things with his inventions.
Tullie shows should have a bucket at some concerts to let fans pay for a new headstone and engraving, which would run, what, $1000 tops? The "BucketList" bucket: put in $10 and go see that site before you kick off, go cold and turn into cosmic energy again.

This just in from "Old Webby"
re the inscription on the memorial, at the bottom it reads "Placed here by the Child Beale Trust 1960". Which is at odds with the church brochure, which says, "His memorial stone was erected 200 years after his death, in 1941, by Gilbert Beale, founder of Beale Park. His body is believed to rest in the sealed vault under the church." So, another date conundrum...

It's great to see Ian on this historic place of Tull! Kneeling before the headstone of Jethro... and as long as Ian doesn't feel guilty about using the name... (...as you probably already know... I think that's taking it a bit too far...) then please go ahead Ian, not that it's up to me... I salute you!

BBC iPlayer TV programmes are available to play in the UK only. Find out why. If you are in the UK and see this message please read this advice.
Hopefully someone with the technical skills will post this on You Tube ...
