Oh dear! I hope this is a bit of a wind up, the nip and tuck road has never seemed like a good idea to me, the results never look natural. There is nothing wrong with looking your age, dear old Mick may be 60 something nowadays but he still looks alive and well and doing just fine.

Mick's autobiography "What is a wommet" is now available from his web site. Should be interesting to read his side of the story concerning his time with Tull and also his sacking! His other musical activities both pre and post Tull shoud also make good reading methinks. More details at www.mickaby.freeola.com/

Just finished reading Mick's book. A great read with very many warts 'n' all reminiscences of his childhood, the bands he was in pre Tull, his time with Tull and what he's done since then including time as a swimming pool attendent amongst others.
The story of his leaving Tull is very much as we know it but he does state that he told the band he wanted to leave only to be hauled in front of Terry Ellis to be told he was fired. Yes, he did pull out of a gig in the north of England and yes, he did have a phobia about flying and all credit to him for being so honest about the circumstances of his departure.
If you like someone with his own honest opinions and who's not afraid to state them in print then I would, IMO, recommend his book. Not one to give to a maiden aunt perhaps as he does not mince his words but having met him a couple of times he's as straight forward in print as he is in real life.
Four pages of black and white photos with a very early small pic of Tull as a foursome possibly dating from when they were fulfilling gigs as the John Evan band et al with IA playing flute which I'd never seen before.
His love of the blues shines through the whole book and with hindsite you can understand why his stay with the band was so short in recording terms. It did make me wonder what would have happened if IA had been forced out of the band and Mick had taken over the reigns. Perhaps in that instance Tull would have lasted as long as Blodwyn Pig did and IA might have carried on as the IA band recruiting some of the contingent from Blackpool that recorded subsequent Tull albums.
It could have done with a discography of his recorded output to put some of the bands he was a part of in context and there is no index so you have to plough through many pages to find a particular event or group line-up.
One for the archive methinks and to re-read frequently.
IMO 9/10

Dear Mad Dog Thanks for posting the Buzzcocks clip - it looks recent? I do not follow the programme so it could be a few years old. By the way, my wife comes from Launceston - we were married in the church opposite Goodmans the Butchers. Regards

Small world 3cordtrick - if you get back down here we'll have to meet up at a convenient time for both of us. I can't travel under my own steam these days as I'm not allowed to drive (bloody doctors and the DVLA) but I'm sure we could work something out especially if Tull play Plymouth in 2009 (?).

Mick was interviewed on Planet Rock DAB last night and the programme will be repeated at 6pm this Tuesday 27 Jan 09. Interesting 1 hour programme, plugging his book and reminiscing about his music career to date.

I've always loved Ahead Rings Out, especially "Sing Me a Song I Know", and as far as I am concerned, its an unheralded classic. Getting To This has its moments, but its a much weaker album.
It's a shame that more people don't know about the Pig. Abrahams is quite the talent, to this day.

Welcome to the forum falstaff. Yes, Mick Abrahams is certainly a talented guitarist and an extremely friendly guy as well. It was interesting to note that in his recent interview on Planet Rock DAB he cited Scotty Moore as one of his influences and he chose "That's Alright Mama" by Elvis Presley as one of his tracks. I went and listened to the song again after quite a few years and yes, I can see why he chose it.
He was, in my opinion, exactly the right person to be a founder member of Tull and all credit to him for being there at the start - he influenced many on how to play the guitar. I agree about "Ahead Rings Out" - it is a great album.

I went and listened to the song again after quite a few years and yes, I can see why he chose it. I'd say that there's not one guy amongst the English players who wasn't influenced by guitarists like Moore and James Burton. Anyway, I've always thought that Blodwyn Pig and The Electric Flag had the same sort of aesthetic - they were looking to bring horns, blues, rock, and jazzier elements together in a new, unique way. They both had top-shelf guitarists too.

I saw Blodwyn Pig at a castle in Staffordshire, supporting JT. I also saw them about 2 years ago in a theatre in Leamington Spa - playing to about 50-60 people. They were really rather good. Mick said "I don't care, I'd play anywhere."

I saw Blodwyn Pig at a castle in Staffordshire, supporting JT. Do you mean the gig at Tutbury Castle in 1994? I was there as well and it was a great location. As Martin Barre said: "A stage with a view."

Mick and the Blods have suffered from very bad publicity over the years and I saw them play many times from 1989 onwards when MA got the band together again, the first being Cosgrove Lodge where they managed to only pull in about 30 people. But as you rightly say, he always gives a good show whether its 10 people and a couple of pet dogs (Bad News anyone?) or 200+.
