London's Culture Death: What the City's Best Music Venues Look Like Now
MARQUEE CLUB (1958 - 1996, 2001 - 2003, 2007 - 2008)Who played there: Residencies during the 60s alone included The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, The Who, King Crimson, Yes, Jethro Tull, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac and The Manish Boys featuring David Bowie. Then came Status Quo, The Police, Joy Division, Buzzcocks, Iron Maiden and, on several occasions in the early 80s, my dad. Why did it shut down: Sold for redevelopment. What is it now: A New York-style pizzeria that describes itself as "casual-chic" and therefore cannot possibly be anything that remotely resembles a New York pizzeria. Also, some flats.

Wow, some of those 1960's venues are only about twice the size of a current drum riser of a band playing arenas. Yet, there's something really vital about playing small venues, for the lack of a magnified "stage" aura, the closeness of the audience, the quieter option (how's your hearing? LOL), etc.

We were at the front so the sound was very clear as we were near the Vox AC30 amps (?} that were used as a PA but what the sound was like at the back of the room I can't comment. We later saw the original Fleetwood Mac at the same venue and from memory the sound was a heck of a lot louder but not as clear so obviously Ian and Co had done a decent sound check and got the sound spot on. The Jimi Hendrix Experience had played the venue a few months before which sadly I did not get to - heaven knows what that sounded like

The above photo is the location of the second venue of The Marquee Club (well next to it anyway) after it moved from Wardour Street to Charing Cross Road. The entrance to the original club is still there in Wardour Street as is The Ship, the quite well known watering hole of stars and punters alike. Charing Cross Road location Wardour Street

LSD flashbacks galore from that view. Grateful Dead x 4 at that place...Tull 's 40th and countless others Good ( Neil Young, CSN. CSNY, Spirit) Bad ( America, The Eagles) and ugly ( John Denver)...hey, in high school you went to all the concerts...especially the ones the girls attended. We rarely paid...very porous venue...at small risk of dying from fall off rock cliffs,,,which the Grateful Dead noted with a rousing version of 'He's Gone' one year.
