Here's a tricky one for the geeky Upper Sixth of Tullfans Discuss and provide examples of the songs that have repetition...words, themes, anything. And the Mouse police Never Sleeps - Weathercock "..Windy roof-top weathercock."

There's obvious ones that we've covered in other threads - double-locked, God, trains and everything associated with them however what about the less obvious and the subtle interlocking of the bards favourite words and ideas? NurseNursie Dear Cheap day Return - "did the nurse treat your old man" The Chequered Flag -" the nurse brings up a cup of tea" Awol - "call the bosses - call for nurses"

There's this bit from No Lullaby: "But there's dragons and beasties out there in the night to snatch you if you fall."
A number of taxi/cab references -- Taxi Grab, Requiem, First Snow on Brooklyn, To Cry You a Song, maybe more.

I suppose the three Jeffery songs are too obvious but we can add Martin in 'Big Riff' and Doane in 'Tall Thin Girl'.

I suppose the three Jeffery songs are too obvious but we can add Martin in 'Big Riff' and Doane in 'Tall Thin Girl'. allow me Marty loved the sound of the stolen mandolin. Big Riff took it on a dare in the night-time. Big boy Doane, he's a drummer. Don't play no tambourine but he's Madras hot on the bongo trot, if you know just what I mean. Stands six foot three in his underwear; going to get him down here and see if this good lady's got a little sister `bout the same size as me.

I was just thinking Beastie there. Should we count the pre-solo call to Martin in Ears of Tin?

Now that you mention it...
"Catches angels as they fall." -- Locomotive Breath
"A sweetly-scented angel fell." "Fell with mine angels from a far better place..." -- A Passion Play
"Where the slow waves crawl and your angels fall and you find you can hardly stand." -- Rock Island
"Arm in arm the angels fly. Keep me from falling out the sky." -- Steel Monkey
"With a fully armed angel to cover me quickly, I'm cool under enemy fire. If I fall, she can crawl right under the wire." -- Bends Like a Willow

Wonder if there was any significance in the term "fallen angel" being used so often then?

And then there's also the references to the cold war - Later That Same Evening, Radio Free Moscow, Saboteur and possibly even Heat and Nobody's Car.

There really is rather a lot of cross referencing in HE
"Neil, Buzz and Michael" - Per Errationes Ad Astra
"Cheer up Charlie" "Angels watching over all" - Cold Dead Reckoning
"Piston-scraping" - The Engineer
to name only a few.

Repetition in the lyrics can in my opinion be okay, but there comes a point when it is too much... In my opinion... I don't think that this is a matter of right or wrong, but it can be explored and documented... In the song Black Mamba Ian uses the word tightrope: "Blindfold on the tightrope - whenever you call..."Hard Liner: "Hard liner, yeah, she brings ice when I bring fire Hard liner, tightrope 'cross Niagara, don't cut my wire..."
North Sea Oil: "Tightrope-balanced payments need a small reprieve Oh, please believe we want to be..." Does anybody know if there are more of the use of the word Tightrope in the lyrics of Ian Anderson?

...Here they come... Please don't mention them again! The Chequered Flag (Dead Or Alive): "The chequered flag, the bull's red rag, the lemming-hearted hordes, running ever faster to the shore singing, isn't it grand to be playing to the stand, dead or alive."Moths: "Life's too long as the lemming said, as the candle burned and the moths were wed. And we'll all burn together as the wick grows higher, before the candle's dead." The Browning of the Green: "It's the browning of the green: we'll be tight as canned sardine. Lemmings to the right and the left of us and all points in between... It's the browning of the green."

A Passion Play: "There was a hush in the Passion Play." "Echoing out of the Passion Play." "Into the Ever-passion Play." "The ice-cream lady wets her drawers, to see you in the passion play." "The Passion Play, goes all the way, spoils your insight." "There was a hush in the Passion Play." "Passionate play join round the maypole in dance." "There was a rush along the Fulham Road, into the Ever-passion Play." Cosy Corner: "Regulars drop by to chat in idle gossip, repetition. Same old words, another day while, all the time, life slips away, but slips so slowly, stretches moments into hours and hours to years. With characters by Harold Pinter, dark silences, slow Passion Play."Shunt And Shuffle: "Same old words, another day while all the time life slips away. But slips so slowly, stretches moments into slow-burn Passion Play. While barren Madge prepares hot dinner. Fray Bentos pie: always a winner."
The use of the words A Passion Play is in my opinion okay, up to now, but if Ian does it again, the quality of the lyrics will suffer... It becomes tedious repetition, that the casual listener probably won't notice, but repetition that the diehard fan is aware of... When it comes to the use of the words A Passion Play, on the original A Passion Play album, I am all for it... It is when it reappears in other songs that it eventually becomes a problem... Again, this is my own opinion, you could call it my personal taste... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passion_Play
