Cross-eyed Mary - 20 Locomotive Breath - 20 Two Fingers - 20 The Waking Edge - 20 With You There To Help Me - 20 Acres Wild - 20 Valley - 20 No Lullaby - 20 Broadsword - 20 Velvet Green - 20 Batteries Not Included - 20 My Sunday Feeling - 20 Strange Avenues - 20 Third Hoorah - 20 Black Sunday - 20 Can't sleep? Head spin? Don't think in circles, it'll do you in. Think back to the dream you had; no sense of being good or bad.

Cross-eyed Mary - 21 Locomotive Breath - 20 Two Fingers - 20 The Waking Edge - 20 With You There To Help Me - 20 Acres Wild - 20 Valley - 20 No Lullaby - 20 Broadsword - 20 Velvet Green - 20 Batteries Not Included - 18 My Sunday Feeling - 20 Strange Avenues - 21 Third Hoorah - 20 Black Sunday - 20
Results about this time next year.
Batteries Not Included/ Velvet Green irritates me Two Fingers hasn't got much in the way of an intro. Sorry but there's more in that list that'll I'll be deducting from rather than adding too.
Where's The Whistler?
Should we at any point get the technical definition of a good intro?

But it's tough to choose from the others. Velvet Green, My Sunday Feeling, Acres Wild, Cross-Eyed Mary... all great. I agree that The Whistler's is good too. Got Roots to Branches on right now--another super opening. There are excellent intros all over the place in Tull's catalog! No Lullaby gets my vote. It's been kicking off my driving-to-work Tull set almost every morning. Couldn't ask for a better opening to my day.

Where's The Whistler? Should we at any point get the technical definition of a good intro? The Whistler does have much of an intro and how could you be irritated by anything to do with Velvet Green? I can understand the irritation with Batteries but there's so much energy that it is somewhat awesome. Martin's whiny licks could have benn cut out though. Other than that the intro has a lot going for it including the spectacular keyboards by Jobson.

He's right you know....there is NOTHING irritating about Velvet Green except that it ends..luckily with echoes in Acres Wild and Lost in Crowds. Once we squash Batteries, it's gonna be tough to vote against any songs on that list. Are you sure you've all listened to Strange Avenues lately....if 'intro' means everything before the first sylabble sung......does it ? Or is it a more subtle definition of music before main music.

I'm just updating this because I think my vote and bunkerfan's vote got lost along the way (I think steelmonkey followed up on tullabye's quoted nonrabbit post, but a few posts had followed nonrabbit's). My apologies if I'm messing anything up.

confusion will indeed raise it's head along the way with this Cross-eyed Mary - 22 Locomotive Breath - 20 Two Fingers - 20 The Waking Edge - 20 With You There To Help Me - 21 Acres Wild - 20 Valley - 20 No Lullaby - 21 Broadsword - 20 Velvet Green - 20 Batteries Not Included - 15 My Sunday Feeling - 20 Strange Avenues - 22 Third Hoorah - 19 Black Sunday - 20 Velvet Green's intro has the one thing that irritates me about Tull and always has ie the medieval ninny nonniness (?) can't stand it - it caused me to abandon the band around MITG. Glad that Anderson has so much more to his bow (flute) though

I'll have go with My Sunday Feeling at the moment because it is a very special song for me, as I've explained elsewhere on the Forum. It's very difficult to imagine what it was like here in the UK between '66 and '70.
In those four years we had Jimi, Cream, Beatles, Stones, John Mayall, PG's Fleetwood Mac and a whole host of other great bands and singers culminating, at least for me, in the release of This Was. The initial Island label single "A Song For Jeffrey" did warn us what to expect but, as it is often said, the rest is history.

The best intro was the spoken intro after they played A Passion Play in 1973: ' Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to an evenings' light entertainment with Tull...and now for our second number we will play you a shorter version of a long song called Thick as a Brick...the 'middle bit', ladies and gentlemen, the middle bit of Thick as a brick'

If I'd been asked this question just previous to Songs From The Wood being released, my answer would be that Cross-Eyed Mary had the best intro. Not the most complex to date, but the one that best illustrates the live Tull experience and the Tull musical approach, as well as being a musical accomplishment and great fun to listen to.

What are we gonna cannibilize after batteries?, Waking Edge cuz it sorta sounds like some other schlocky, non Tull tune...what is it? 'Sounds of Silence '? Anyone else hear that ?

Sure. Waking Edge deserves to be butchered. I love Crest of a Knave, but I always kind of zone out when Mountain Men ends and Waking begins. It's the low point of the album for me.
