I got mp3s sent for the 2 CDs. I’ve played it on the computer which doesn’t have great sound but there are many improvements. The reverb is gone from the nightcap material. A much better listen now. Apart from I’m your gun which may have been a live studio recording. Inverness sleeper and Rolands entry are excellent. Calafel is an early version of Part of the machine. The others are nice too. The album drums are quieter too. I’ll try in my car today for a better listen. I’ll have to wait for the package to hear Dj dream, Dinosaur, Honest girl and End game

Got my copy of the CD/DVD boxset on Friday and have just had time to listen to CD1 (The Steven Wilson remix of the album) and DVD3 (the 1982 German concert). The whole package is excellent. It is well presented and in addition to the 5 CD's and 3 DVD'S, there is an excellent write up of the making of the album with input from band members and the producers. There us also a copy of the tour programme from the Broadsword tour, comments from Ian Anderson on each song, a list of the tour location in 81/82 and other write ups.
I listened to CD1 on my old 1980's era stereo. I bought the cassette version of the album in the 80's and then the 2005 CD remaster. Never thought that I would buy it again in 2023. In my opinion, this new version sounds so much better than the 2005 edition.
The live DVD sounds fantastic too though the DVD started jumping and skipping between songs when it got to Sweet Dream. I cleaned the DVD, retried playing it and the same thing happened again. I would be interested to know if anyone else has this problem. It may just be a problem with my DVD player.
Overall very impressed with this package and the work that has gone into it.

I found it difficult to get the discs out of the box too. Was at risk of breaking them. I think they are meant to slide out. There are two little hinge things at the bottom of each cd holder and it seems you slide them back from there? I played the DVD that was skipping on another player and it seems fine now…

Interested in my 5-cents regarding the Bookset? Only a few words, which I posted already on FB:
There are very few musical connections today to what I used to enjoy as a young teenager. And if there are any, they are at best superficial sentimentalities. However, with 'Broadsword & The Beast,' it's completely different. I first heard it as a 13-year-old in 1982, and it still grabs me, has been my favorite rock and Jethro Tull album ever since, and was the catalyst for becoming an absolute Jethro Tull fan later on. That's why I couldn't wait for this set to finally be released for years. Aside from that, I'm already a big fan of these sets and their overall packages.
Yesterday afternoon, I could finally hold them in my hands, and I spent the rest of the day with them, making me practically unreachable for my family. However, I still haven't fully grasped everything. So, I am anything but neutral when I write about my impressions. More like completely biased. I can't help it, honestly. In fact, I was so emotionally touched while listening that I had tears in my eyes at times.
I'm focusing on the 5 CDs; I still need to delve deeper into the DVDs. Steven Wilson's mix has brought the sound and the audio experience to the forefront. All the musical contributions of the individual artists benefit from it. However, what's particularly noticeable is that Ian's vocals, which were at their peak here in my opinion, and David's basslines have benefited primarily. I haven't heard it clearer, more powerful, and simply more beautiful, even on the remaster. Steven Wilson has clearly tried to improve the drum sound. It was certainly not easy, and I think he's made the best of it. Along with the significantly improved bass, the songs have gained more punch overall.
He has refreshed, clarified, dusted off, dried out, and modernized the actual album. And I find it much better than the remaster (but then again, it was just a remaster). I already have total listening pleasure in this segment alone. When I hear the intro of 'Broadsword,' I get goosebumps. I discovered instrumental passages that I hadn't noticed before (maybe they weren't noticeable before). I also noticed what a brilliant song 'Watching Me, Watching You' actually is, even though many consider it a weak point of the album. But why was 'Cheerio' cut so short? Well, the alternate version makes up for it.
What surprises me, however, is that the associated songs seem to have been improved the most. Now, I'm referring to the ones known from the '20s Box' and 'Nightcap' because I don't know about the unknown ones. I could never quite connect with songs like 'Too Many Too' or 'I'm Your Gun,' 'Rhythm In Gold,' or 'Lights Out,' for example. What Wilson has achieved here is simply incredible. What genius songs? But maybe my perspective has changed over the years. The vocals stand out because not so many effects were layered over them.
Of the still unknown pieces, 'Inverness Sleeper' and 'Honest Girl' touched me the most. Much too good to let them gather dust for decades. The alternate takes are all interesting in their own way and, together with the high-quality demos, are a truly valuable addition to the 'BATB' session package. Personally, I don't find anything unnecessary or redundant in the context of this.
The live compilation is well done. I think Wilson has brought out the best possible here as well. However, I am sometimes bothered by the somewhat lifeless drum sound (especially in 'Beastie'), particularly with the snare. But that is probably due to the recording itself during the gigs. It could be done better, as you can hear f.e. in 'Sweet Dream' or 'Flying Colours' (was that DP with the high scream at the end?). But that's nitpicking at a high level because Martin's guitar work, especially in songs like 'Pibroch,' is simply brilliantly showcased, making it a real auditory delight. Also, the song selection with plenty of 'BATB' tracks is a qualitatively valuable live document. It's really great to hear 'Watching Me, Watching You' live. I haven't heard anything better from this era. And I think it was already a superb band lineup, even with Peter John Vitesse and Gerry Conway.
I've only flipped through the booklet and read the first two pages so far. I'm looking forward to Good Ol' Webby's stories. It definitely gives a high-quality impression. Some (on Facebook) criticize the CD holders. But they're actually easy to remove and insert again. You just need to gently pull the CD downward from the hole and remove it. However, the small springs can still break easily.
My biased conclusion: I am totally thrilled and emotionally moved by this fantastic work. For me, it's a musical highlight of this year, even ahead of 'RökFlöte.' And it was probably a lot of work to put together and edit this set like this. The price is quite reasonable in my opinion, especially when you consider the cost of box sets from other bands that contain only remastered material. I'll be able to enjoy this for quite a while.

I find the SW remixes a mixed bag. I loved what he did with "A" ,he transformed the album. On some remixes though, I find his stereo image too wide, leaving "holes" in the sound, and pushing little details to the front of a mix at the expense of the more established instruments, while exciting at first, on repeated playing can seem odd and unbalanced. Sometimes we get an overloud tambourine at the expense of muted keyboards ( as on SFTW). So, though I find his mixes interesting and worth having they don't always have the magic touch.
It may be my ageing ears, but I find the mix of the "Broadsword" album one of the less satisfying ones. The drums are too "out front" seemingly detached from the rest of the instruments, and "Clasp" especially sounds "clunky". The problem SW has is that many of the Tull mixes were pretty good originally . Still its good to have both and I am grateful for them. As a package once again the box set is a wonderful thing to have and the immersive enclosed book certainly "spins me back down the years"

Well, I've read those or similar negative points regarding the SW mixes after every release of a bookset. Of course it could be a fact, but also a question of a personal perspective or musical ear. I do not share your criticisms to this extent, but I don't have a particularly good musical ear, maybe you've got a much better one. There are only minor points I critizized in my post above regarding the live compilation, which could be based on different causes, f.e. the live recordings. There is only one track of the album/associated recordings in which I would criticize something, and that is 'Crew Nights,' where Martin's guitar was mixed too far into the background. But that's already nitpicking at a high level.

The drums were always forward in the mix. They sound slightly better on the remix. The bonus tracks are more improved because they had alot more reverb. Wilson likes to remove reverb and high frequencies which I like. Does Wilson prefer just to alter bonus material mainly though? We’ll see if he gets to Crest because that album is high in both areas.

Similarly with the tracks we like and those we don't. I agree Inverness Sleeper is a gem, But Honest Girl I find a bit twee by IA standards, almost embarrassing lyrically. I always felt the original album would have been stronger with Flying Colours and Watching me replaced with .Jack Frost and Mayhem Maybe. An interesting topic for debate.

There are so many great bonus tracks. In order of preference and possible replacements are Jack-a-Lynn, mayhem Maybe, Overhang, Jack Frost, No Step, Lights Out, Commons Brawl and Motor Eyes. All would be worthy replacements. A double album better but here is my wishlist for the Neely titled “Broadsword” because I’m eliminating Beastie. IMO the first three songs are the weakest on the original album.
Jack-a-Lynn Overhang Mayhem Maybe Flying Colours Watching Me, Watching You
Broadsword Pussy Wiilow Lights Out Slow Marching Band Seal Driver Cheerio

One thing that never gets talked about, but which is very apparent on the bonus tracks is the great Mandolin playing of Dave Pegg. Seen him do it live with Fairport tooo. Fabulous stuff!
