Why is Benefit called Benefit? Anybody know why Benefit is called Benefit? In the complete lyrics book Ian writes that Terry Ellis decided upon the titles of Benefit and Stand Up. "In both cases I didn't like the titles" Ian Anderson. But what does it actually mean? WHY is it called Benefit? BENEFIT -
ben·e·fit n. 1. a. Something that promotes or enhances well-being; an advantage: The field trip was of great benefit to the students. b. Help; aid. 2. A payment made or an entitlement available in accordance with a wage agreement, an insurance policy, or a public assistance program. 3. A public entertainment, performance, or social event held to raise funds for a person or cause. 4. Archaic A kindly deed.
For a time (albeit about 10 seconds) I amused myself with the idea that With You There To Help Me was actually a song of love sung towards the weekly benefit cheque that an unemployed person would receive. I'm going back to the ones that I know, (yeah, down the dole office)with whom I can be what I want to be. (unemployed, incapable of work, sick?, aye - sick of work - different story each week)Just one week for the feeling to go (yeah, until the next benefit cheque arrives) and with you there to help me then it probably will. Now, I'm just being silly here. But BENEFIT has always struck me as an odd title. Is it called Benefit because it is good for the listener? Sorry, I'm rambling a bit here - quite late. Any idea or thoughts anyone?
