Anybody watch it on TV last night? It was great to see Robert Plant & Alison Krauss pick up 5 awards for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, Best Country Collaboration with Vocals & Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album. Well deserved too IMO, definitely up there with me as album of the year too.
I also couldn't help but see the irony of not an eyebrow being raised when Coldplay beat Metallica to best rock album.....they are much less 'Rock' than Tull! I wonder if Lars Ulrich will throw all his toys out of the pram about it again? ;D

The Tull Grammy thing in the late 80s really was a publicity blessing in disguise...every single year since, in the days leading up to the Grammies, there is invariably a picture of Tull or Ian and the millionth re-hashing of the Tull beats Metallica story in all the newspapers in the land. Which Grammy in history ever had such staying power as publicity for a band? leave it to Tull to go where no other band has gone before in Grammy usefullness! Grammy winners, btw , get to vote annually, forever...too bad we didn't think to ask ian if he votes and, if so, who he has voted for in the past...something tells me the Grammy ballot goes out with the trash Chez Ian!

The category Tull won wasn't just "best rock album," it was "best hard rock," which is a category Metallica probably fit better, but they've won 8999 grammys anyhow, so it all works out. That Lars fellow is pretty cranky. www.rockonthenet.com/grammy/hardrock.htm

The Metallica cover of Cross Eyed Mary is REEEEEEally good! I've seen Metallica live a bunch of times and think they're great....the guitar player knows what he's doing, Hetfield is the real thing and Lars, though well known for rock star assholia....more common with lead singers than drummers, isn't bad...though not standout like the lead men. I saw Metallica play acoustic for one of neil Young's annual bridge school benefits...not only were they great...the kids are onstage watching...it was hilarious to watch hetfield try not to say f**k every other word...he f**king couldn't f**king do it no f**king matter how f**king hard he f**king tried. They keep a fan club list from their club days in SF and those people still get tickets first, best seats etc etc.....too bad i was too sissy for them back then...oh well. Live and ramble

It was Iron Maiden who did the cover of Cross-Eyed Mary, not Metallica.

I think i woke up from surgery...after a motorcycle wreck in 1983 and heard the iron maiden tull cover on my roomies box...and was sure i had died and gone to hell...it was dreck....metallica did cross eyed mary more recently and it kicked ass...i think it's on our board under miscelllaneous videos.

There is a video of Metallica & Cross Eyed Mary on youtube Steel but it's Metallica footage over the Iron Maiden version. I haven't heard of metallica doing it either so maybe that's the one you saw?
There is also a big scary metal version by Clutch, could be them you heard?

Did my homework and, sho' enough...the very same Cross eyed mary that traumatized me post-surgery and made me think i had died and gone to hell...was the one, grafted onto Metallica footage running around a stadium stage...impressed me...how embarrassing...thank god I'm amongst friends! The guys in Metallica look pretty cool...maybe the eye is quicker than the ear...or maybe the real Metallica, along with GnR, in the late eighties...made me more open to the sound of iron maiden, that horrified me in 1983!
