If you think of any questions you think should appear here please let me know (only newbie related stuff, other questions have their own section).
Q) Where do I start?
A) A good place to start is here in the Newbie section, where you can introduce yourself in your very own thread so that we know you're there and can all say hello and make you feel at home. Then feel free to join in any of the threads that are already on the board, and also to start your own - just make sure that it is in the correct section and that you're not repeating a thread that already exists (don't worry if you make a mistake though, it'll get fixed and you won't be shouted at - it's just if you get it right first time it gives me less work!). And don't feel shy about being new or anything - everyone is very nice and welcoming here and no-one ever gets ignored on purpose or flamed - if for any reason that does happen it will be dealt with Being polite and friendly (and throwing in the odd compliment ) helps though! Also please try and avoid typing in "txt spk" and it can be a bit difficult to read - particularly for those of us whose first language isn't English. Also existing members please take the time to say hello to newbies, nothing like having your first post ignored to put you off for good!
Things to try and avoid in the interests of keeping everyone happy:
text speak
duplicating threads
posting in the wrong section
posting nonsense
Q) How do I post pictures?
A) - First of all they need to be on a web page - unfortunately I can't help with that side of things
- If it is on a web page, right-click on the image, choose Properties and copy the URL
- When composing the message you want the pic to appear in, click on the button 'Insert Image', 3rd from left on the bottom row (below the underline button) - this will make URL[/img ] appear (but without the spaces)
- Delete 'URL' (between the bracketed bits) and paste in the url of the picture
- Preview your message to check you've done it right!
Q) How do I get writing to scroll across the screen?
A) - Click on the button with an arrow to the left of an 'M'
- appears (without the spaces)
- delete 'TEXT' and type in what you want to scroll
- Note: don't do what I've done in the past and type your text first, then highlight it and press the button - the text disappears!
- Most of the function buttons (bold, italic, colours etc.) work on the same principle
Q) Where do I go for help?
A) Firstly see if your answer is here or somewhere in the 'Get Your Questions Answered Here' section. If not then ASK - either in the appropriate section, or you can PM me- I’m here to help!
Q) How do I get the correct time to show?
A) In your profile, type +5.9 into the Time Offset box. BTW this only works if you're in the UK (or the same time zone as) - so if you're not you'll have to work it out but it should still end in .9 (e.g. if you're in New York it will be +0.9 I think)
Note - the board time seems to be slightly out of sync in that the difference changes over time .I have just updated the time difference above so that it is correct, but it will have changed again in a few weeks or so so you might have to fiddle with the number a bit (oo-er)
Q) How does the 'star rating' status thing work?
A) It depends on how many times you've posted - the boundaries are (I think):
0-49 posts - *
50-99 posts - **
100-249 posts - ***
250-499 posts - ****
500+ posts - *****
Q) How do I get an avatar (i.e. a picture under your name when you post)?
A) - First of all the picture you want needs to be on a web page, you can use a pic that's already on the web (although I think it uses up their space every time you use it so it's best to get permission from them first - or just steal it and see what happens ) or you can host your own. I find www.photobucket.com simple to use (and it's free!)
- When it is on a web page, right-click on the image, choose Properties and copy the URL
- Go into your Profile and under 'Personalized Picture' there is a box called 'I have my own pic' - tick the box next to that and paste the URL into the text box next to it
- You can change the size using the boxes underneath
- Alternatively you can choose one of the pics that are already there (in the Personalized Picture box) - the only problem with that is many of those are already used by board members so you end up confusing people!
- Click on Change Profile at the bottom of the page when you've finished
Q) How do I send a PM (Private Message)?
A) Click on the name of the person you want to send it to and you will see their profile - at the bottom there is a link in red that says 'Send this member a private message' - click on that and it should be fairly self-explanatory from there on! PM's to yourself will appear at the top of the screen when you're logged in (e.g. "you have 2 messages, 1 is new") - click on this to go to your inbox and read your messages.
Q) How can I stop getting emails every time a thread is replied to?
A) Click on the 'Notification' button at the top of the screen (next to 'Logout') and you can switch it off there.
Q) Why do I get this face appearing randomly in my messages?
A) This face appears when you type 3 question marks in a row, or ? ! ? does it too (without the spaces). So try and avoid excessive use of punctuation and you should be ok
Q) Why has my thread been deleted/moved/locked?
A) There are many possible reasons for this:
•The thread duplicates another existing thread
•The topic may now be out-of-date and/or irrelevant
•The thread may be broken (e.g. not showing the correct number of pages)
•The thread may be in the wrong section
•The subject matter may be thought of as inappropriate
•The topic of conversation may have been exhausted and things are being repeated, taking up valuable space
•I was bored and wanted something to do*
*of course this doesn't really happen
If none of the above explanations seem to apply, PM me to ask.
