One of the things that I've always loved most about Tull is Ian's songwriting about rejection and unrequited love, from the male perspective. His lyrics on this topic speak to me very strongly, because I've experienced those feelings, and Ian's words seem to perfectly capture what I've felt on those occasions. I've been the forlorn, brokenhearted guy in Teacher, who can't seem to snap out of it, a couple of times. Similar examples of these songs are Witch's Promise, Singing All Day, Hand of Thumbs and Pibroch. I'm sure there are others as well. I think Ian, myself and many guys don't deal with rejection very well, and this is so vividly expressed in many of Ian's songs.

Ian Anderson, on all aspects of romance, is unsurpassed as a writer of rock songs...whether rejection, shock of success, cynical deterioration of love's first bloom, break up or renewal of fatith, he describes it all in a way that we can all understand and relate to...not only have i been the guy in his songs countless times, i have borrowed his lyrics, acknowledged, to say so to women in my life...none more than Under Wraps and; 'who comes here to wish me well....'

I know exactly what you are talking about. He is a brilliant, inspired songwriter and lyricist. Sometimes I think, how can anyone have written this, it's just that wonderful. Nobody writes love songs as well as Ian does, and as you've pointed out, he writes on the subject from all angles. From one night stands (AWOL) to songs imagining that a computer might house not only intelligence, but also a soul capable of falling in love with its user, he has covered it all. Secret Language of Birds just might be the most romantic album ever composed by any rock artist. Jeff

You think SLOB is more romance tinged than 'Minstrel'?

Maybe they're about the same, Requiem and One White Duck are very romantic, but SLOB has a heck of a lot of love songs. Circular Breathing is another one about rejection from the male perspective. Also, how could I forget SFTW. Just about every song on that album is about romance and love, a modern day Midsummer's Night Dream, if you will, and The Whistler is right up there with Ian's most exquisite love songs.

Ian's 'Love' Songs........now you're talking "....go upstairs, take off your make-up,fold your clothes neatly away. Me I'll sit and write this love song as I all to seldom do..." The man's a ''flippin'' genius!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ian's love songs really provide a dramatic contrast to the admitedly 'silly love songs' of his peers in rock and roll.......even when he says 'silly sad, i never had to write this before'...his love songs are not silly!

Wondring Aloud was our wedding song, although the band butchered it pretty badly. (They did a decent Bouree though.) On Secret Language, I find Jasmine Corridor to be musically reminiscent of Wondring Aloud, and it is a perfect bookend, looking back over years gone by, much as Wondring Aloud was looking forward. Well, we strayed a little from the subject of Ian's unrequited love songs to his love songs in general, which is fine because his writing on the topic of love is sublime either way.
