The convention of Tullianos celebrates 20 years in very good health LINKThe event, which includes different concerts, will be on July 8, from 7pm, at the Marc Grau Auditorium. This Saturday, July 8th, a new edition of the Tullianos festival is being celebrated , a very special date because this year marks 20 years since a small group of Havanans, led by Albert Villanueva, decided to hold a convention of Jethro Tull fans, the British progressive rock band led by Ian Anderson. The event has grown over the course of these two decades until it has become an essential event for lovers of the group, where people come from all over and which has had the presence of almost all the members of the band.
Albert Villanueva, the president of the association of fans of Jethro Tull, assures that "there will be memories of the people who were important for the association at the beginning, that later some for certain reasons have moved away a little and left step to others But it is clear that, if we have reached 20, it was because 5 or 6 people at the beginning of the 2000s decided to take this forward" .
In this 20th edition, the main artists will once again be former members of Jethro Tull. On the one hand, Dee Palmer, the group's keyboard player in the late 70s and who led the band's orchestral arrangements. At the age of 86, he has agreed to be part of Tullianos XX and to perform with Stewart Wood. On the other, Clive Bunker, the band's original drummer, with the Lincoln Quartet. In addition, this year's line-up includes other artists and groups: Cristóbal Vergara, a regular at the convention; Etérea, a group from Barcelona that approaches psychedelia, and Paco, Josing & Friends. Regarding the latter, Villanueva comments that "The fact that Paco and Josing come together says a lot about Tullianos. They bring two musicians from England and one from Italy, who have played in previous years and who have decided to come back because they felt very welcome" . After two decades of experience, the future challenge is to bring Jethro Tull's most legendary drummer, Barriemore Barlow, who is resisting them at the moment.
This year the convention has left the main festival program to take place the following weekend. It is important, therefore, that people know that the Tullianos are not only not gone, but are still in very good shape. They will be from seven in the afternoon at the Marc Grau Auditorium, with everything ready to enjoy good music, with the sale of commemorative T-shirts and bar service, to help cover the costs of this free event.
Here you can listen to the complete interview that Albert Villanueva gave to the radio program "With G de Gavà" LINK

' These guys promoting 'Give Till it Hurts' into a sweet little song then adding more Tullisms, is nothing short of brilliant. All the more reason to get to Tullianos 2024.

TULLIANOS XX - JULY 7/8 2023 Having now submitted a full review of Tullianos XX held in July 2023 in Barcelona to be published in a future edition of A NEW DAY complete with some live action photos, it seems only fair to share the article with everyone here on the Tull fan forum. Whilst I have written the bulk of this article, Stewart Wood contributed with his kind review of Tullianos Acoustic Band. Please check out the following link for quality photos of what proved to be another great success in Spain despite the cancellation of the flight bringing Dee Palmer and Clive Bunker to the event. www.flickr.com/photos/65109692@N02/collections/72157722125994682/Tullianos is a well established and enthusiastic volunteer association based in Barcelona, Spain that celebrates the music of Jethro Tull mainly through annual weekend Conventions bringing together both past and present members of Jethro Tull, other musicians who have been influenced by Jethro Tull and fans who love the music of Jethro Tull. The fact that this organisation has continued to exist, albeit with limited funding, for well over 20 years is testament indeed to the dedication, camaraderie and friendship that exists within the group. As such Tullianos is more than just a Tull group. It's success lies in being very much people centred where people meet as much for their positivity and enjoyment of life as for their interest in the music of Jethro Tull.. On paper at least, Tullianos XX held on the weekend of July 7th/ July 8th 2023 promised to be another really great event with the added bonus of two former members of Jethro Tull on the bill as well as acoustic guitarist/singer Stewart Wood, who is rapidly becoming a living legend in his own right following the creation of his Jethro Tull inspired YouTube specials entitled 'The Daily Sporran'. As per usual the setting was in the magnificent outdoor amphitheatre setting of the Auditori Marc Grau with the main accommodation setting of Hotel Flora Parc in Gava. Flights booked, posters and t shirts printed, sound and stage crew and equipment all in place. Weather perfect. What could go wrong..? Hmm...Birmingham Airport and a certain flight company had other thoughts on the Friday afternoon. As the hours passed by with Clive and Dee patiently awaiting positive news of their delayed flight to Barcelona, news eventually came through - flights cancelled for the next 24 hrs at least. One can only imagine how Dee and Clive felt as they reluctantly returned home in low spirits . Back in Barcelona, I can confirm that the mood was very sombre indeed as everyone retired for the evening. A new day and a realisation that both ex members of Jethro Tull would not now be attending the evening event inevitably led to some last minute alterations but in the true spirit of 'the show must go on'....the show did indeed go on and proved to be a great success in spite of the unfortunate and unavoidable circumstances. Opening the show and always ready and willing, Cristobel Vegara played through a nice blend of acoustic Tull songs together with some 60's pop classics complete with backing tapes. Appreciated as always by the rapidly growing crowd, and deserving of a regular spot in these annual events. Next up were Paco, Jose and friends now expanded to a five piece including yours truly and renamed Tullianos Acoustic Band. Thankfully Stewart [Wood] volunteered to review this section of the concert though I did ask him to be kind and gentle given the almost zero opportunity to rehearse prior to the event. A highlight of the day was the Tullianos Acoustic Band, a festival supergroup comprising personnel from renowned Tull tribute band Cold Flame (Pat Rowbottom on bass, Mark Parkinson & Alex Mevi on flute) and old friends/special guests from Spain (Paco Jiminez on acoustic guitar & Jose Melon on vocals). The band played an unusual and fascinating collection of songs from the Tull catalogue that was particularly well-suited to a line-up that sported two flutes and no percussion. “Reasons for Waiting”, “Witch’s Promise” and “Dun Ringill” in particular were played with a warm, melodic feel that brought out the loveliness of the originals. Rarities such as “Botanic Man” and “Give Till It Hurts” were played with zest, accompanied by interesting, mellower versions of “Crazed Institution” and “Dr Bogenbroom”. The whole performance was a lovely acoustic late-afternoon experience, spiced up by a wonderfully pyrotechnic front-man performance from Jose Melon on vocals that captured the flavour of Ian’s on-stage theatrics in the 1970s. setlist: Dr. BogenBroom/ Crazed Institution/ Botanic Man / Witches Promise/ Reasons For Waiting/ Dun Ringill/ Weathercock/ Up the Pool/ Give till it hurts/ Bungle in the Jungle.
The final act of the acoustic session from this year's event featured Stewart Wood fresh from yet another Daily Sporran video broadcast with a hastily written set composed only hours before following the news that Dee Palmer would not be able to attend due the previously mentioned flight cancellation. It is hard to believe that Stewart, armed with acoustic guitar and voice, casually dressed in t shirt, shorts and a baseball hat was only playing his second ever 'gig' following last summer's inaugural appearance as a duo with Dee Palmer at A NEW DAY Festival. Ability, confidence, humour and passion were all in abundance right from the opening bars of The Whistler which then moved on to 'One White Duck' and excerpts from both Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play'. What impressed me was the ease with which Stewart moved from one Tull classic to the next blending all the material together very nicely. He certainly was able to breathe new life into every tune without really straying too far from the original with a strong yet emotional vocal and some very skilled guitar playing. All too soon the set closed with a fabulous version of Acres Wild and a standing ovation from the very appreciative crowd. setlist: The Whistler/One White Duck/ Childhood Heroes[TAAB] / The foot of our stairs[ APP]/ Moths/ Home/ Broadford Bazaar/ We used to Know/ Slow Marching Band/ Acres Wild.Next up on stage and taking advantage of stage lighting, the full pa system and the ever growing crowd were local Barcelona jazz fusion specialists Eterea who came along with a legion of their fans . With a five piece band incorporating keys, two bass guitarists, electric guitar, drums and a very hard working alto sax player , the band provided a major contrast to all that had gone before with lengthy instrumental original tunes though for me the highlight of their set proved to be the band's last two numbers - a fairly straight played Serenade to a Cuckoo dominated by alto sax and a very busy jazz inspired version of 'Far Alaska' from the Dot Com album which worked really well and proved to be their only vocal number. Hailing from Italy, the very experienced and respected Lincoln Quartet, who are actually a five piece, have been performing at Tull fan club shows across Europe for many years and this has included past Tullianos events in Spain. With a line up fronted by singer guitarist Lincoln Veronese and featuring Giacomo Lelli on flute, Andrea de Nardi [keyboards] and Iacopo Gobbato [bass] the band performs both the music of Jethro Tull as well as covering a whole range of other progressive rock artists. . Often their Tull tribute shows have also featured Clive Bunker as an additional drummer as was the plan for the band in headlining Tullianos XX this year. . With Clive's flight from the UK cancelled, additional responsibility, at very short notice landed on the shoulders of the band's young drummer Nicola Callegher. The band opened up with a brief intro from Aqualung before Giacomo Lelli took the band through their paces with a flawless and energetic ' In the grip of stronger stuff'. The next thirty minutes saw the band surprisingly moving away from Tull material to play various progressive rock songs from the likes of Focus and Genesis . I was reliably informed that several Italian prog rock tunes were included in this section of the set and though this was not music I recognised, what was clear throughout was the high standard of musician on stage. Long before the band began their longer second half of the show performing Tull classics with great aplomb , what impressed me was how well each member of the band interacted with each other. At times responsibility for changes in tempo or tune changed from one member of the band to the next but so professionally done and with a clear joy in playing together. The band were indeed very tight, the quality of musicianship was striking and I was very impressed - a feeling undoubtedly shared by the crowd. Special mention to drummer Nicola in coping with some of the Tull material without Clive. Most of the Tull section of the set favoured the early material but it was a joy to hear the band tackle Budapest and Rocks on the Road. It was all in all a fitting finale to what had been yet another triumph for Tullianos. setlist: Aqualung intro/ In the grip of stronger stuff/L'uomo - La Carrozza di Hans/ Concerto Grosso/ Sguardo Verso iL- Collage/ E Festa- House of the King/ Firth of Fifth / Protect and Survive/ My Sunday Feeling/ Living in the Past/ Hunting Girl/ Bouree/Nothing is easy/ Thick as a Brick/ Rocks on the Road/ Fat Man/Cross Eyed Mary/ Life is a long Song/Aqualung/ Locomotive Breath/Budapest/This is not love / Cheerio As always a lot of planning, dedication and hard work during presiding few months enabled the Spanish fan club to present Tullianos XX to the general public. Despite the unfortunate circumstances that had threatened to derail the whole event twenty four hours earlier, once again the day proved to be a fantastic success with some wonderful music played in a fabulous setting celebrating the music of Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull. Once again I can only applaud Tullianos for their efforts in making this annual event happen. Plans are already being made to host The Tullianos Festival in 2024 again in Gava Barcelona. Look forward to seeing you all there next July...come on folks you know it makes sense. PR.
