By Robert Shepard Went to see Jethro Tull at The Palace Theater in Albany last nite with my good friend Michael Grin, keyboardist extraordinaire for Jethro Tull tribute band, Warchild. Before the show, we had the chance to hang and share a brew with amazing Tull drummer, Scott Hammond. Ok, look, full disclosure……we were also trolling the audience for attendees for our collaborative Manticore/War Child show a little further north at The Strand Theatre NEXT WEEK!! It’s a fair cop! Come & see the show, it’s a dynamo!

Images by Helmuth Gripentrog Jethro Tull – a band name that inspires awe in those familiar with their songs. Highly successful from 1969 onwards, this outfit was mainly based on the exceptional musicianship of its singer and flutist Ian Anderson. Today, only Anderson remains from the original band, but he has ensembled fine musicians to join him on his successful new album ‘Rökflöte’ and on a concert tour, which even brought them to Helsinki. I very much enjoyed this evening at the Helsinki Hall of Culture, where Jethro Tull had a mixed program, introducing music from their latest album ‘Rökflöte’ of which I liked the song ‘The Navigators’ very much. But in the end, it was their earlier hits that meant the most to me. Enjoying ‘Heavy Horses’, Sweet Dreams’, ‘Aqualung’, the incomparable ‘Bourée’ (with a fantastic bass solo) and ‘Locomotive Breath’ as an encore, we all could sense that Anderson’s voice has dimmed a bit and also his famous choreography while playing the flute has lost some of its vigour (still very impressive for a man at the age of 76), but his flute playing is as sharp and exciting as ever. Very sensibly, the public was not allowed to take pictures or videos with their mobile phones during the concert. Only at the encore ‘Locomotive Breath’ taking pictures was allowed, while all kinds of steam locomotives rolled past the band on a screen in the background.

Ian Anderson of JETHRO TULL: LINK 1"Norse mythology interested me not least because of its overlaps with nationalism." The lyrics of British folk rock matadors JETHRO TULL's new record "Rokflöte" are inspired by Norse mythology, even though frontman and composer Ian Anderson has long been prejudiced against it. We will find out how the new songs sound live on December 4 in Brno and December 5 in Prague!JETHRO TULL will perform on December 4, 2023 in Brno's Zoner Bobyhall and a day later on December 5 in Prague's Congress Center. You can look forward to the whole new concert program! There will be brand new songs from the latest album "Rokflöte" , but also classics like "Aqualung" , "Cross-Eyed Mary" or "Locomotive Breath" , which will take you back to the good old days! JETHRO TULL at Sparkshop The songs on "Rokflöte" were inspired by Norse mythology, which singer Ian Anderson had long avoided. In an interview with Spark in September, he revealed why: “Part of the Pagan music scene can be associated with the extreme right and nationalism in its naïve view of Norse Paganism. This discouraged me for many years from the intention of touching on Norse mythologies in the texts of JETHRO TULL . As I told you in an interview a year ago, I have been interested in religion for many years, since I was a teenager. Of all the polytheistic religions, Norse mythology interested me perhaps the least because of its overlaps with nationalism. When I started writing the songs for "Rokflöte", I told myself that my apprehension was unnecessary. I should take the processing of the theme of Norse mythology as a challenge. I would describe my approach to incorporating paganism into JETHRO TULL's music as intellectual. My goal was to offer the listener the opportunity to become familiar with the beauty of ancient myths and to point out those stories from the Poetic Edda that contain wisdom that is also relevant for modern society." Tickets for both concerts are available HERE LINK 2

LINK By author: Aleš Materna LIVE: Even without the sick keyboardist, Jethro Tull thrilled the packed Congress Center Prague The founding member of the British band Jethro Tull , singer and flutist Ian Anderson , with his younger bandmates performed another elaborate and musically and visually captivating show in Prague. At their exactly fiftieth concert in the territory of the Czech Republic and Slovakia since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Jethro Tull showed even without the keyboardist, who ended up in the hospital a day earlier, shortly before the Brno concert, that they still do not belong in the dustbin of the history of art rock music.
Jethro Tull Prague, Congress Center 12/5/2023 These songs never get old. Although by no means simple, they are often complicated compositions composed of many overlapping layers, in which a prime folk-rock foundation plays. The main instrument is Anderson's flute, still awe-inspiring with an air of a kind of sanctity. Flute and a strange, kind of ballad Anderson's singing, which often resembles a recitation, combined with elaborate parts of electric and bass guitar, supported by keyboards. As Jethro Tull apologetically explained at the beginning, due to John O'Hara's indisposition, and in order not to have to cancel the two pre-Christmas concerts, the keyboards were played from the original recordings.
Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson filled the Prague Congress Center
In addition to several songs from the last two albums, this year's twenty-third album called RökFlöte and last year's The Zealot Gene, there were also time-tested classic compositions. Surprisingly, the newer songs worked flawlessly among the best-known hits, whether it was Wolf Unchained with a visually eerie depiction of wolves or Mine Is the Mountain with an equally successful projection of mountain scenery and Navigators with a period atmosphere of sailing the ocean on a wooden sailboat.
It must be acknowledged that each of the songs of the entire almost two-hour show was accompanied by a completely different, but at the same time breathtaking visual projection, which elevated the already charming and well-constructed songs to another level. Simply put, there was a lot to listen to and a lot to look at. There was no need for a big show, after all, it was mainly provided by a seventy-six-year-old musician who, even at this age, jumped around the stage with a flute like a rarach. There was also his iconic stance on one leg. Of course, his singing is not what it used to be years ago, which was not expected considering the musician's age, but his playing on the flute, in short, is still brilliant. Although the other musicians in the band also played excellently, including many wins and curls of electric and bass guitar, so honestly - without Ian Anderson and his charisma and instrumentality, the band would hardly be half as good.
The entire concert was framed by compositions from the most famous record Aqualung , which the band recorded at the end of 1970 and released in the following, which unexpectedly shot it to the top of the charts in many countries around the world. Cross-Eyed Mary was played right at the beginning , then at the end Aqualung , which was slightly reworked , that even rock fans, apart from the opening riff, had a problem recognizing and identifying this song, however, again with a visualization related to homelessness, which enhanced the song - without a doubt, it was the absolute highlight of the evening . And in the encore, the song Locomotive Breath underlined the whole performance .
But let's not be mistaken - there were many more musical highlights - just randomly, for example, the well-known Heavy Horses in the background with draft horses, Mrs Tibbets with the alarming theme of the dropping of the first nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, Japan and a warning about the destruction of our planet, or the final song before the break, a cover version of Johanna Sebastian Bach's Bourrée in E Minor , which the band recorded for their second album Stand Up already in 1969, which also featured the motif used in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, specifically in This Jesus Must Die .
Grateful fans in the packed hall enjoyed the concert and gave the band a standing ovation at the end, which all the musicians certainly deserved. The whole concert was a wonderful demonstration that if someone is a true musical genius, he does not lose this ability even in old age. And when on top of that he is energetic and active and still composes new and new songs and records new albums, and non-stop and breathless concerts and exciting stage performances, fans can appreciate this effort and activity. As one of the members of the Jethro Tull fan club confessed during the concert : "I saw all fifty of their concerts in our territory, and some abroad as well. And each one was and is an amazing experience for me, and I still enjoy it.”
One final sentence - Jethro Tull's Santa Claus concert was a wonderful musical visual experience that must be seen, heard and felt live.
