JETHRO TULL in the Magical Nights of La Granja (Segovia) LINK 1Ian Anderson's mythical band performs this week at the "Magical Nights of La Granja" festival, an event where other interesting classic artists such as Víctor Manuel, Luz Casal, Ara Malikian or Loquillo will also participate throughout the month of August.
We give all the details below…
In the Segovian town of La Granja de San Idelfonso, more specifically in the Central Patio of the LA GRANJA Glass Factory, a Festival is celebrated every year as a lot of strength and tradition (at the time we saw MAREA there , for example ) .
It is about " The Magical Nights of the Farm " that encompass fifteen varied events and performances as important as those of our protagonists JETHRO TULL , to which other music legends in their respective genres are added: Víctor Manuel, Luz Casal, Loquillo , Ara Malikian, Eliades Ochoa or Israel Fernández (to name the most important) who will be the protagonists of a cycle that no music fan should miss, especially when it takes place right next to the incomparable setting of the Gardens of the Palace of La Granja.
They themselves present it as: The program of the Magical Nights of La Granja Festival is made up of several festivals that contemplate different performing arts complemented with other cultural disciplines such as literature, poetry, painting or traditions.
For their part, and the one that concerns us, the British JETHRO TULL need little introduction at this point. Champions of progressive rock and legendary band where there are in the history of ROCK (with capital letters... or "folk rock" if we get pejigueros), which has signed such essential works for the genre as "Aqualung" (1971) or "Thick as a Brick” (1972), after decades of record silence, which were used by its greatest leader and exponent, Ian Anderson (Scottish by birth) to promote various businesses ( as a prominent businessman in the agricultural sector in the England of his loves ), and undertake various agricultural activities (his other vital passion, in addition to his cats) in addition to publishing three of his solo albums…
Recently, the British group, heritage of humanity and of all those who vibrate with the most incandescent folk-rock... has released two LPs in the last two years, which have surprised all and sundry: "The Zealot Gene" (2022) and “RökFlöte” (2023), which come to add to his extensive discography made up of more than twenty studio albums and numerous live performances and various compilations. And in fact we saw them in Madrid, at the Teatro Circo Price, not many months ago and we loved them, as we told you here at the time.
The current formation is led by the legendary Ian Anderson on vocals (and his unmistakable flute) as well as playing other instruments such as the harmonica, mandolin or acoustic guitar, plus Joe Parrish on electric guitar (already out of the band he also legendary guitarist Martin Barre), plus David Goodier on bass, Scott Hammond on drums, and virtuoso John O'Hara on keyboards.
Little more can be added from a group that has starred in the most beautiful musical chapters you can imagine in albums as inspired as the mythical trilogy composed of “Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to Die!” (1976) “Songs from the Wood” (1977) and “Heavy Horses” (1978), without forgetting the mythical live double LP: “ Bursting Out ”(1979) and other highly inspired works that came years later such as the unforgettable “A ”(1980) or the masterful “ The Broadsword and The Beast ”(1982), in a time of maximum artistic creativity and fat cows like elephants.
May you enjoy it…. And in case anyone doesn't know, here we can read an updated bio of the band that we published in a very cool article a few months ago on our website.
More info on the concert series website , on its official Facebook or on JETHRO TULL's . Organized by Summum Music : Tickets for sale LINK 2 (they are not popular prices because the site is very special) at this link . We'll see you there and we'll tell you about it here!

Agustin Tull Zaragoza Until the next concert !!!! Good concert tonight despite the setback of not having John O'Hara, the damn covid has not allowed him to travel to Spain. Rather than discontinue it, Anderson has opted to use the pre-recorded keyboard parts.

JETHRO TULL Not without my flute BY MICHAEL KOEHLER-UPDATED ON 08/11/2023 LINK Concert with a birthday song: Ian Anderson celebrates his 76th birthday in Hanau, while Jethro Tull plays music for the initiated.
Hui – Ian Anderson's brisk, sporty leap into the limelight with his flute at the ready is still impressive. Exactly 76 years old to the day is the only remaining original member of the prog rock icon Jethro Tull, which was founded in 1967 after some confusion about the line-up.
After a striking start with "Nothing Is Easy" from the second studio album "Stand Up" (1969), the visitors in the well-filled Hanau amphitheater honored a touched Mr. Anderson with a song "Happy Birthday" for several minutes.
With self-deprecating British understatement, Anderson tries to mark the birthday with the words "Who do you mean?" Me?” downplay. Despite a long history of chronic lung disease and thrombosis in his legs, the veteran remains adamant about his own health when it comes to extended touring trips. A valiant fighter through and through.
Typical sound trademarks came about rather accidentally
Even in the sun-drenched amphitheater he demonstrates energetic commitment with his ubiquitous flute and significant voice timbre. Anyone who takes the trouble to recapitulate the band's history will discover several astounding facts.
The sound trademarks that are so typical to this day came about more or less by accident.
The band's name, which refers to one of the founders of modern agriculture in the 18th century, was given to the troupe by their booking agent at the time without telling them beforehand. And only a few weeks before the band started, Anderson taught himself how to play the flute, probably also inspired by "Ruby Tuesday" by the Rolling Stones.
56 years later, including a five-year break after 2012, Anderson, who is still greatly admired by the fan community, is still handling the typical ingredients. He is joined by an essentially constant lineup since 2017 with a single new addition in 2020, guitarist Joe Parrish.
In the flawlessly unwound repertoire with Anderson, whose voice is no longer quite so intact due to his illness, there are songs in almost chronological order from what are now 23 studio works - the most recent album "Rökflöte" was released in April 2023 LP tracks for those in the know Although the odes also include evergreens such as "Aqualung", "Sweet Dream", "Heavy Horses", "Bourrée In E Minor" adapted by Bach, "Songs From The Wood" and the only encore "Locomotive Breath", the The range of songs by Anderson and his men on this evening was deliberately not designed as a pure series of hits.
Rather, the two parts of the concert, separated by a break, are dominated by LP tracks for those in the know, such as “Dark Ages”, “Mrs Tibbets”, “Warm Sporran”, “Holly Herald”, “We Used To Know” and “With You There To Help Me". They are all greeted with warm welcoming applause after the first few bars. Spontaneous applause also applies to the virtuoso solos of individual band members. Many a song even shines in a new arrangement, structured completely differently than in the original. Towards the finale, Anderson, who was awarded the Order Of The British Empire by Elizabeth II in 2008, beams with joy. Jethro Tull can also be expected in the future.

The Walled Garden Music Festival, Tonbridge UK has been cancelled by the organisers due to low ticket sales. Shame as this was Tull's only other UK date except the Shepard's Bush show a few months ago.

Weird not hearing John start the song but what a great player Joe is Is John back for the US. tour? The decision may be made tomorrow. I believe this would require a Covid test to proceed. The whole situation appears uncertain at the moment.

Great solution having guitar do the piano intro. Proof that Tull indeed belongs on the road and NEVER short their audience.

I wonder if this Seven Decades Tour will have a different setlist from the current one so we can get an indication of what will be played when it reaches the UK next year.
