Another year, almost over.
Time to reflect on the new music scene. List the new release albums you bought in '08 and grade them on a 1-10 scale.
here are mine:
Rush - Snakes and Arrows Live - 7. Should have just been a bonus with the DVD in my opinion, but it is great to have live versions of Circumstances, Entre Nous and a few other live rarities. Most of the track listing is already available on 100 other live releases though. Sound is great and the band is tight. A must for any big Rush fan, but for any casual fans that already have either Different Stages, Rush in Rio or R30, you aren't missing much.
Metallica - Death Magnetic - 7. The damn guitar hero download version sounds 100 times better, but the actual music is a return to true, classic Metallica, I liked it!
ZOX - Line in The Sand - 9. I love this album and this band, very happy to have discovered them this year. Very Unique sound featuring a rocking violin, which at times sounds like a wailing lead guitar. I really hope they do something and tour in 2009, this album has me hooked.
Bob Dylan - Tell Tale Signs: the Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - 8. I was surprised with how much I enjoyed this collection of live , unreleased and alternate studio version os Dylan songs from around 1989-present. It's definately the cream of the crop for the live tracks, as he's a tough one to see in person (you think Ian's voice is gone?!?!). I really enjoyed the 2 alternate version os Mississippi from the Love and Theft album. That was one of my favorites from that album and it's really cool to get a glimpse into any artist's processes, especially the great Bob Dylan. If your not a fan of later Dylan, you wouldn't like this, but if you find it tolerable, get this album.
Scott Weiland - Happy in Galoshes - 7. still getting acquainted with this one, Didn't think much of it at first, but it's most definitely a grower and I like it more with each listen. I'm happy i got the 2 disc special edition because disc 2 is better than disc 1.
3 Doors Down - 3 Doors Down - 6. not particularly my cup of tea, but not a bad rock and roll album. If i were a 3 Doors Down fan, I would probably like it more. I only got it because it was something like $1.99 on amazon one day.
Steven Wilson - Insurgentes - 3. I'm really disappointed with this album, as I had high hopes being a big fan of Porcupine Tree. There are a few parts that I do like, but my overall opinion is that its boring, repetitive, self indulging and slow. It sounds like a score for a movie. It would serve well as background for a film because it certainly wouldn't take any attention away from what's on screen. Pieces of it are almost directly taken from PT songs and made boring. Now, with that being said, I am looking forward to my 5.1 mix DVD coming in the mail, because I do love fancy sound effects swooshing around the room, and I can tell from the CD stereo mix that there will be plenty of that.
I think that's it. or at least what I can think of right now... I don't buy much new music.
what about you guys?
