Does anyone else struggle with Dan Crisps vocals on Martins albums? Out of loyalty I buy everything Martin puts out and I desperately want to enjoy his solo albums, but feel they are all but ruined by Dans sneering vocal style, which gives the whole thing the feel of a "pub" band. Given that there are wonderful singers around that would love this gig its a real shame that Martin went with a mate instead of looking around.

I have to say I don't. It was a bit of a gear-shift at first to hear the Tull catalogue sung in a higher register and with different intonation, but I've come to enjoy Dan's reinterpretations of Ian's vocal lines. He's not Ian, and so I can never love it in quite the way I love the originals, but I do enjoy Dan's 'respectful' reworking of the vocals, strongly influenced by the originals but doing its own thing too. So, although I know many agree with you, ado, I'm glad Martin is working with Dan Crisp.

It's taken me quite a while to get used to Dan Crisp trying to fill Ian's codpiece. Some songs a little better, some a little worse, some straight out grating but all in all I have come to appreciate him as a vocalist, above all, on the non Tull material, both originals written with him in mind and covers, well chosen. I think characterizing him as a 'pub singer' really hits the target. there is something about him that is way more 'guy next door' than 'rock star', which is the polar opposite of Mr. Anderson.

As opposed to the Bi-Polar opposite off Mr.Anderson (see above), which would be, I dunno, Axl Rose?

Dan Crisp December 2015 March 2017 Asheville North CarolinaMeeting Dan before and after the show was quite an honor and I was impressed. He re-created many Tull songs in a fresh and respectful way. Excellent !!! To some he was just another musician/singer with a job which was beyond his abilities. I know he made me feel very lucky to see him perform then and also in 2017

I must admit I had my doubts about Dan's voice when I first heard him but I totally changed my mind when I saw The Martin Barre Band live at Newcastle in 2017. I was very impressed indeed with Dan's ability as a singer and as an excellent guitarist. He's never going to sound like Ian and he doesn't try to replicate him in any way, he's just a very talented man. One of my video's from that night in Newcastle

Dan Crisp is good. Ryan O'Donnell was magical.

Your video brought a smile to my face Bunkerfan. I must have been stood about two rows behind you that night. I also saw Martin & co in the Arc in Stockton a year or so later. Concert was great but the atmosphere was a bit "muted" as the attendance was poor.
Regards Dan Crisps voice, I much preferred it when hearing him live too.

Ian is a fantastic singer, and it's an hard act to follow... Yes, Dan has his own voice, but I just don't like it... Away with words, or find another singer... tough, but that's how I feel about it...

My wish would be that Martin concentrated on his own music and while I would agree with the point raised by others that he put so much into Tull over the years and that he has every right to play Aqualung etc., he is too talented a musician to ignore his own material.
