Jethro Tull: The Christmas Concert LINK Thursday 2 December 2021 ***SOLD OUT*** lichfieldlive.co.uk/2021/12/03/review-jethro-tull-at-lichfield-cathedral/Review: Jethro Tull at Lichfield Cathedralby Ben Macnair 3rd December, 2021 A sold-out Lichfield Cathedral audience heard one of rock’s most idiosyncratic bands and some very special guests when Jethro Tull performed. With a storied career in music going back more than 50 years, they blended pop, rock, blues and progressive styles into a sonic melange that put the focus on the flute of Ian Anderson – a charismatic figure at the centre of a storm of creativity. Their repertoire for the evening consisted of some classic Christmas carols, spirited punk rock, classic pop and jazz-tinged arrangements of other work. The ensemble for the evening was guitarist Joe Parrish, Scott Hammond on drums and percussion, John O’Hara on piano, keyboard and accordion, David Goodir on bass, alongside Anderson on flute, mandolin, acoustic guitar and vocals. The evening started with a spirited jazz reading of God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman and We Three Kings, which featured a choir from Lichfield Cathedral School. The first guest of the evening was Marc Almond, who sang his song Bedsitter. One of the highlights of the evening was the ensemble version of Say Hello, Wave Goodbye with showed his remarkable range of to good effect. The evening’s second guest was TV food critic Lloyd Grossman who joined the band for two punk rock songs. Christmastime Romance was the more energetic of the two, a display of youthful vigour and enthusiasm. Although much of the soloing came from the flute, the guitarist and keyboard player had their fair share of soloing and time in the spotlight, playing in unison and at times in harmony. The bass playing and drums also added a lot to the mix, with key changes and changes in time signatures being safely navigated. At times, the organ of the cathedral was played, used to particularly fine effect accompanying the choir. A reading of one of Marc Almond’s best-known songs – his cover of Tainted Love – sadly didn’t feature, although a favourite at Christmas work discos, it probably wouldn’t have suited the more refined surroundings of the cathedral.

No matter how many thousand of miles away, on any given night, it's a better world if Tull is playing live.

I was in Bury St. Edmunds Cathedral last night, and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had an idea of what to expect as I was in Ely for the Christmas show a few years ago,and as I live nearby I couldn't resist. Because it wasn't a "Rock" concert as such, I didn't have to contend with the ghosts of Tull in their prime eating away at my enjoyment, this made a big difference. The band were tight as we always know they will be, Joe Parish and his clever Folk Rock guitar style suits the band much better than Florian and his over the top guitar hero string bending ever did , though my one criticism is that Joe was rather underused. The Tull material was heavily weighted towards instrumentals, Ian wisely avoided singing too much and indeed, just played the flute during "Solstice Bells" which worked nicely (a highlight for me to see this live). Special guest Marc Almond made a good job of "Witches Promise" plus a couple of his own songs. Second guest (bizarrely I thought) was food critic and "raconteur" Lloyd Grossman who appears to have no musical ability whatsoever (although he seems to think he has) and he blasted through a couple of punk songs which really didn't fit and shattered the mood somewhat. A good night then. I didn't think Id see Anderson/Tull again , after witnessing some wretched vocals during the solo tours of the last few years, he really cant sing any more and cant carry a full on rock concert . But in this context, with guests, shared vocals, a varied set list it was fine and a nice show to add to the memory. Good atmosphere too, and surprisingly not quite the geriatric audience I have come to expect.

Lloyd Grossman also took part in the concert in Durham a few years back. Remember reading, years ago, that he was a huge Tull fan and also that he played in a band in his younger days.

Usually there are listings at setlist.fm but there are no results as yet. The direct link is www.setlist.fm/setlists/ian-anderson-1bd69578.html so it's worthwhile keeping a check on the site.

Ill try from memory, no doubt there will be a set list somewhere online. Anyway, from what I remember (not in order though!) We five Kings, Bouree, A Christmas song, Another Christmas Song, Solstice Bells, I believe in Father Christmas,Pastimes with good company, God Rest Ye, Aqualung (orchestral version) , Loco. Ian recited extracts from Marmion. Interspersed with this, Marc Almond did two or three songs of his own and Witches promise. Lloyd Grossman did two or three songs too many. Choir sang Gaudete. The irritating Rev. danced in the Aisles throughout. Highlights for me ,Solstice bells (sang by the band ,Ian wisely only played flute) and a spirited Witches promise by Marc Almond. Lowlights were few on a good evening. Ian really cant sing the Greg Lake classic very well though, and I hoped Joe might get a solo spot, but in truth the band were tight but pretty anonymous.

Wow! Looks like a fantastic evening - beautiful building and great photos I must admit, Marc Almond and Ian Anderson is not a combination I would ordinarily have put together, but they seem to go back quite a long way. Bedsitter and Say Hello are fantastic tracks - and Witch's Promise is one of my top Tull tunes, so I'd have been very happy with that set list. Thanks for posting

Ian Anderson’s ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ rocks the Christmas bells LINK Christmas music, now there’s a story that keeps on giving, like a well-loved quilt passed down through generations. I remember back in ’06, sitting by the fire, I stumbled upon a video of Ian Anderson performing ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’. Boy, did that strike a chord! The way he played that flute, reminded me of the first time I heard a robin sing at dawn.
Christmas wasn’t just about the presents or the big family dinner; it was about the music that filled the air. Anderson, with his one-legged flute stance, brought something fresh to the table. It was like mixing grandma’s traditional eggnog with a splash of modern zest. The man had a way with his instrument that could make even the Scrooges tap their feet.
Collaborating with that German youth orchestra, now that was a sight. You could see the respect in their eyes, like young saplings growing under the shade of an old oak. It was a symphony of eras, a bridge between the old and the new. Made me think of how traditions evolve, but the heart of Christmas stays the same.
I tell ya, every time I hear that tune, it takes me back. It’s like finding an old photo in the attic, bringing back a flood of memories. Anderson’s rendition of ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ wasn’t just a performance; it was a journey through time.
Christmas songs have a way of doing that, don’t they? They wrap you up in a blanket of nostalgia, no matter where you are. And when you see a master like Ian Anderson adding his touch, it’s like watching a painter turn a blank canvas into a masterpiece.
So, my dear friends, if you’re looking for something to warm your heart this Christmas, give Ian Anderson’s video a watch. Share it with your loved ones because it’s more than just music; it’s a piece of history, a sprinkle of joy, and a reminder of what Christmas is all about.
