You know how sometimes you think about 'infinity' and your mind takes you to that place where you can and can't understand it? That's how much I wish I was in Lisbon tonight instead of my job.

JETHRO TULL: Coliseu dos Recreios, Lisbon | 2022.02.18 [report] LINK Two decades later, JETHRO TULL finally returned to Lisbon last nightIt seems almost surreal to walk down Rua das Portas de Santo Atão and see a line of people at the entrance of the Coliseu dos Recreios to attend a concert by an international band again. Against all expectations, Ian Anderson 's JETHRO TULL went ahead with the concert scheduled and the number of people who were to enter the venue was, from the outset, synonymous with a full house. Admittedly, the average age group was well over 40, but the enthusiasm must have been on par with an audience half that age. At 21:40, he starts to hear the introduction that would start the concert. The warning was given and JETHRO TULL would go through their career playing the most progressive themes – The Prog Years, that's what the digression is called. The concert began with the sound of «Nothing Is Easy» , from the album «Stand Up» from 1969 – which was the first work with guitarist Martin Barre , who would stay in the band until its dissolution in 2012 . Story» and «Thick As A Brick» , which provoked the first big reaction from the public.
Throughout the night, Ian Anderson was telling some stories between songs, like the one that preceded “Hunt By Numbers” , with the musician remembering his cat, Curry. It is said that, when he went outside, the cat liked to take smaller creatures into the house and completely undo them, leaving the floor full of blood. According to Ian, the cat is now vegan. And he doesn't complain! The song turned out to be dedicated to the cat and Vladimir Putin. Then followed «Bourrée In E Minor» and «Black Sunday» , here almost a duet between Anderson and guitarist Joe Parrish . Before revisiting the classic «My God» , the JETHRO TULL frontmanmentioned that, at the time the theme was edited, in 1971, the lyrics brought him (and the band) big problems, especially in the more religious states of the United States. Americans thought the topic was about anti-religion and the only thing Anderson asked people was to read the lyrics, appealing to common sense.
The first part of the show had ended there and, a break that was supposed to be fifteen minutes, turned out to be almost half an hour, giving the audience time to visit the merchandise stand and have a drink. The second half of the concert began with the sound of «Clasp» , from the album «The Broadsword And The Beast» , from 1982. Then «Wicked Windows» and the new theme «The Zealot Gene» were heard, which Ian Anderson explained be about the mean people who browse social media, Donald Trump style.
Then there was still time for «Songs From The Wood» and the classic «Aqualung», both very well received by the public, especially the latter. For the encore, “Locomotive Breath” , which took us on a locomotive trip on the screen behind the band and which, throughout the night, was showing images and animations referring to each of the themes. The night ended with "The Dambusters March" , a rendition of an original Eric Coates theme . In short, it was a very well spent night with a band in excellent shape. It is true that some of the arrangements may not have pleased the most staunch fans, but the great truth is that everyone left the Coliseum happy – despite not having seen big smiles due to the mandatory use of the mask. Tonight, the dose is repeated in Porto.

JETHRO TULL… THE MAGIC FLUTE INVADED INVICTA LINK A cold Saturday, 20:00h and an abnormal traffic for the day and time, even with the embarrassing metro works. Suddenly, I notice an abnormal influx of quotas (including me), through the streets, heading towards the SuperBock Arena. Couples, parents with older children and some younger ones , women and men mingle in the Crystal Palace Gardens. Average Age: More than 50 years. But what will be the reason? Two decades later, Jethro Tull again released a new album, “ The Zealot Gene ”, and presented it to the public in Porto.
Ian Anderson, David Goodier, John O'Hara, Scott Hammond and Joe Parrish, promoted a true trip to the past for the delight of the present audience. It's hard to describe what their style is, a complex musical construction in these 55 years of career, which involves Blues Rock, Jazz, Folk, Classical Music, Hard Rock, Progressive Rock and maybe a few more things. A great fusion of styles, added in a cauldron, mixed with Ian Anderson's flute and thus forging a unique identity, combined with a very strong stage performance, with the famous way of Ian Anderson playing the flute and flexing his left leg, remembering a medieval flutist, a Jogral, who entertained the public in the squares and palaces.
Tonight's concert was like this, in the midst of several old hits and the tracks from the new album, it was possible to awaken the imagination many times. We can be transported to the Middle Ages or to the middle of a magical forest with elves and fairies. Or we go on a psychedelic journey rocked by the synthesizer and the video projections at the back of the stage, or still shaking our heads with the powerful riffs and distortions of the guitar. With them everything is possible.
An authentic journey, which washed the Soul. Photographs / Reporting: Sergio Pereira

Jethro Tull come to Spain to fight against fanaticism LINK The next days, March 16 at the Teatro Circo Price Apolo in Madrid and March 18 at the El Batel Auditorium in Cartagena – unfortunately, no dates in Galicia this time – Jethro Tull will perform in these two Spanish cities, presenting live an excellent new studio album, the first with original songs of the group that appears under that name since the already distant in time "J-Tull Dot Com" appeared in stores in 1999, leaving aside the 2003 Christmas album.
Whoever signs these “Rock Papers” every week has had the opportunity to see Jethro Tull live numerous times since 1982 and I have always left the concert satisfied after having always enjoyed magnificent concerts, performed by a band that despite the different line-up changes, has always maintained an impeccable level of professionalism, the quality that is required of a group that is an authentic heritage of rock history and that has surpassed the livelihood with commendable dignity, thanks to the leadership of a musician in many aspects controversial, but whose charisma, personality and talent is undeniable: Ian Anderson.
Therefore, I not only intend to enjoy the concert and the interpretations of timeless classics such as “Aqualung”, “Thick As A Brick”, “Too Old To Rock'n'Roll, Too Young To Die” or “Songs From The Wood”, but also, and I say this to all of you with total sincerity, about many songs from the new Jethro Tull album, which I want to tell you about and which I strongly recommend, because it is really the best thing that the group has done in many years. years.
Jethro Tull's new work, released last February, is entitled 'The Zealot Gene' - in Spanish, "the gene of fanaticism" - and after having had the opportunity to listen to it many times, play it on my radio programs and even having had the opportunity to interview Ian Anderson himself for www.mariskalrock.com, I must say that it seems to me to be a work full of quality, inspiration, I sincerely think that it was made to the taste of the Jethro Tull fan of all time, and that for me Its main virtue is that it has managed to amalgamate the sound, the style, the most characteristic signs of identity that have given the group its personality since its inception with a modern, contemporary production and approach to the entire sound of the group, and that in that a priori difficult fusion, nothing squeaks, nothing is out of place. Everything makes 'The Zealot Gene' an album whose listening is a pleasure, believe me.
I'll say more: It would probably be necessary to go back to an album in the category of the legendary “Songs From The Wood” from 1977 to find a more consistent, solvent and solid album by Jethro Tull. From the opening with the magnificent “Mrs. Tibbets”, which in other times would have been a multi-million dollar hit single and shows Ian Anderson's ability to update the group's sound without making it lose its essence and entity -I think it is by far the best song on the entire album- until the closing of the album “The Fisherman of Ephesus” this excellent “The Zealot Gene” is a work that I repeat, I think it is made to measure for the fan of the group and that it even contains very clear winks, I don't know if intentional or not, to all his record history. Listen to the most “Tullian” readers of these “Sad City Sisters” papers and tell me it's not a 2.0 version of “Mother Goose” from “Aqualung”.
Or that “Shoshana Sleeping” does not evoke passages, musical aromas or echoes of the Jethro Tull of the 70s. And what about the talent, of course known but not always remembered, of Ian Anderson as a harmonica player in “Jacob's Tales ”? not to mention a song like "Where Did Saturday Go?" that he would in no way have been out of tune on an album like “Heavy Horses”. But the band doesn't just live in its past, as I pointed out in the introductory paragraphs of this article and among others, “The Betrayal of Joshua Kynde” wouldn't sound incoherent in the 90s, apart from the aforementioned “Mrs.Tibbets”.

Far from being the lockdown album, the songs and recordings featured here have their origins in 2017. The musicians featured here have, in most cases, been part of the Jethro Tull lineup since 2007, so this is essentially the band that today embodies and represents the history of that project that Ian Anderson imagined in 1967.
On a thematic level, Ian Anderson has said that this album began with the idea of offering songs focused on emotions or particular human traits and referred to the Bible as a fundamental reference. Taking thus the biblical narrative, with specific references noted in the album booklet, Anderson's ideas/images to criticize and speak out against extremism in politics and in the current media environment "The Zealot Gene", without being a concept album, it does keep a certain homogeneity in its message. In the title track of the album, which is not in vain perhaps one of the rockiest on the album, the lyrics say in one of its fragments: "The populist with a dark appeal, the complacency of hate / That the xenophobic alarmists deliver in a dish to tame the pangs of hunger and satisfy lust / Slave to ideology, moderation bites the dust”. Some things never change, the Jethro Tull frontman infers... just before starting another flute solo.
The talent, the inspiration, the imagination and even the awareness and concern for values such as the need for coexistence, respect and tolerance do not know of ages, tendencies or musical styles. They know sensitivity, culture, empathy and humanity. “The Zealot Gene” is an excellent show that I recommend listening to, enjoying and reflecting on for the elements it brings to each of these fields.
Really don't mind if you sit this one out / My word's but a whisper, your deafness a shout… does it ring a bell?

The fireproof Ian Anderson and his Jethro Tull return to Madrid LINK It will or will not be a topic. But old rockers never die. At least this is the case of the eternal Ian Anderson , founder of the legendary band Jethro Tull , so innovative when it appeared more than half a century ago thanks to the incorporation of the flute.
Regardless of the formation of the legendary group, always led by Anderson, a concert with his fabulous direct show is always good news. And that also legendary and more than fifty-year-old altar of rock that is Circo Price, with an extraordinary musical program, brings them to us on the 16th.
