Just read it - couple of ok questions
But this answer perplexed me ......
Q Will it be Jethro Tull till I die ?
"These days the fans don't want a new Tull album they want an old Tull album. It's about nostalgia and that's the problem. I can write that stuff but I don't really find any joy in the idea. You know what happens in a Rolling Stone concert if they play unfamiliar music "Oh right it's pee break " That's what happens and it's really sad."
Has he said this before?

Yes He has said this before But I am sick of hearing everyone asking for a NEW Tull release.
What I hope he is trying to say is that everyone wants a new album but written in the style of an old one. Lets face it some of the New songs.. (then you need to go back a few years) are not that great but the albums of the 70's had one great song after another.
So if everyone calls for a new album,Ian write what he is in tune with now, Tull release it and everyone hates it well thats not what he wants.... BUT what all the fans I speak to are sick as hell of are reissues digitalified remastered remasters and compilation albums.
No win - no win situation !!!!
what he should do is rewrite TAAB with updated lyrics to make it relevant today Maybe call it Thick As A Breeze Block OR even Thick as a Banker
Just A Thought...

Well then maybe we should get Col to set up a poll of our collective opinions on what we would like in a new release and send it to them to help sort out the confusion And I'm sure we will see the 'definative new release' next year

electrocutas when I say I want something new, is just that, sorry so many are sick of hearing we want new, I dont care if it is in the old style, which would be nice, that is what they are, I do like a lot of the RockIsland and Crest, to me that is Tull also, so may be we come full circle and get a new old style album.... and I am also tired of the remasters, how many do we need?
Sorry I'll stop now....

I for one, DO want new. The last two, totally "new" studio albums ."Roots..." (1995) and "Dot Com" (1999) were excellent, imho. But, since they didn't sell Ian will NEVER do another new one. He's all about the money, folks. Sad but true. Stop dreaming. It's been TEN yrs., folks.
Tull's first 10 yrs= ELEVEN new studio albums
Tull's last 10 yrs= ZERO new studio albums.
They (Ian) are the Beach Boys. Tour after tour after (greatest hits) tour.

Yeah sorry Badly worded, What I meant was that all the fans I know want a new album including myself and I am tired of hearing it said, So how Ian can say that they DONT want new maretial is a bit beyond belief. But Ians understanding of what the fans want seems based on the opinions of an 'Eleatist' minority that seem to bend his ear and not by the paying audience that attend the shows. I am sure if he agreed to issue a CD on AND records it would be out tomorrow... Opps.... cynicism

Hmm tricky one this. I would of course love to see a new Tull album too but they still put on a good show so if it never happens then so be it. I guess it all boils down to Ian thinking there is or isn't enough of a market for new Tull material to justify the time and expense of making one and we are possibly not the best people to say as we are maybe a tad biased.
Instead of polling opinion here, us being the hard core tull nut's n'all, maybe we should do a little survey at the next Tull gig we go to and ask the folks in the cheap seats if they want new Tull stuff or are just there for the hits?

I hate the Beach Boy analogy...a has-been band endlessly touring a handful of hits...and I hate that, in some ways, it does apply to Tull....no getting around the shortage of new material, save a few instrumentals and re-arrangements. Every Tull gig has its magic moments and watching them in action is not nostalgia, its live and real and current...but from a certain objective distance it is hard to convincingly dispute the Beach Boys tag. Ongoing bands need new releases, new material and new setlists...otherwise....reach for the surfboards!

Well.... Her Anderson is supposedly NOW playing 27.11.08 KOLKATA THE SCIENCE CITY AUDITORIUM INDIA 29.11.08 MUMBAI THE SHANMUKHNANDA AUDITORIUM INDIA 30.11.08 NEW DELHI THE HAMSADHWANI AMPHITHEATRE INDIA 02.12.08 HYDERABAD THE HI TECH CITY AUDITORIUM INDIA 03.12.08 BANGALORE THE PALACE GROUNDS INDIA
So he will certainly have a few topics to write about Caught in the crossfire at Mumbai Taj Mahal Palace Hotel... Lets hope The old Guy and the rest of the band are all fit and well !!! Scarey stuff...

Look....it isn't like our great party leader, whose policies are mysterious and likely correct, needs weighty topics...The guy has written countless songs, with varying lucidity, about the weather, the animals in the fields, the animals in his living room. a jeep, a real estate agent and the animals in the damn zoo........I bet fans peed during Budapest when it was new, while they waited for Aqualung/Brick/Locomotive Breathe......Memo to Ian:...new Jethro Tull material please!

I think it's a great idea

Dont tell me you are the one with the clipboard who stopped me from getting in to see the the band last year in the Assembly Rooms in Derby. !!! (only kidding)
Man I was so disappointed, my first time too and I was on a real high, fully expected to get to talk to them all, in retrospect I dont know why I should have thought that.
Truthfully I dont care what the band releases, as long as it contains new material (IA says he has a number of tracks ready, at least three we already 'know').

I think it would be really interesting to gauge the interest of the more casual fans. Though it would be wise to avoid the clearly drunk and belligerent, most people would be (imo) more than willing to offer their opinions about nearly anything (especially, oddly enough, to people with clipboards). One could even come up with an alternate question or two for when one encounters the more hardcore Tullies in the crowd

just a passing thought I had on this dilemma..... One of the main factors that had me hooked instantly on Tull way back in 1972 was the fact everything sounded so different - even on one album

Why stress ourselves with work at a Tull gig....we can just leave the surveys at the local Prius dealerships, weight watchers outlets and hair implant clinics.
