Feel the same with songs about south London (where I grew up). Squeeze seem to be appropriate with this A panoramic view of part of south London, taken from Shirley Hills where I played as a kid.

I love the goofy stuff...like brits or germans imagining the american west or Lou Reed writing about berlin, having never been there at the time..or Eric Burdon imagining a Warm san francisco night (no such thing exists...the fog invades by 2 pm).

cool topic, nr!
Here's a little band out of a city I grew up a few miles away from; Providence, Rhode Island. The TV Network I work for had them appear on one of our shows and I took a liking to them. Very unique sound which is tough to find these days.
I present to you ZOX:

Thank you sir ZOX is very good. I hope to catch one of their shows next time out. From the little bit of bootleg stuff I've seen on youtube, it looks like they bring it and the violin player plays it like a lead guitar, which i really dig. here's a bit a of a live performance:

Here is Bill Monroe, from Rosine Kentucky, the inventor of Bluegrass:
And only slightly lesser in stature, Ralph Stanley from Virginia (with Patty Loveless, a Kentucky girl)

^^^ Oh You're right there Sword!! 'Cause I live in a fairly rural part you still go round to people's houses for a ceildh (not sure if thats how the Irish spell it - I only know a spattering of Scottish gaelic) and there is such reverence to the old people who sing the old songs. Great new bands too on the scene most of who have been brought up in musical families and in that tradition. It exists also in Scotland mainly the Highlands . However (a plug here for my beloved Glasgow;)) Glasgow is the largest celtic city in the world and hosts a myriad of great live shows and big concerts. Also I have recently discovered BBC Alba and watched a great show yesterday with Julie Fowlis among others singing gaelic love songs .Wonderful ! Ps when are you coming over Sword..and the rest of you ?? Well, reading this did make me think about when I get my money saved and begin my world travels and it would be nice to have a guide when I go around to those old people's houses! Sounds a bit like rural Appalachia also...

BBC Radio Cornwall has a few Cornish language programmes but as I am, and always have been, absolutely c**p at languages I can't make head or tail of it. However I can now swear in Polish and make the right gestures so I am after a freebee holiday in Warsaw.

Do you think you can expand your vocabulary? And how did you come to learn this Polish?

Sort of miss London now and again since I've been living in Cornwall. I worked as a security officer on nights in the City of London in the early nineties and often found myself humming Waterloo Sunset on my way to work. And in answer to your question rebecca, where I work now we have a contingent of Polish migrants who delight in my mis-pronunciation of Polish expletives and I once found myself muttering Polish when I dropped a cup in our kitchen so some of their phrases have stuck in my befuddled brain. Must add that nowhere have I found a nicer bunch of people and as I'm now not able to drive owing to disability, they are always the first to offer me a lift home at the end of a shift. For that these guys have my undying gratitude and thanks. Also Polish chocolate is gorgeous

I'd love to find out and I think I know a place where I can get some, but I've, ah, you could say overindulged over the past week or so. I'll have to remember that for later. I'm glad to hear you have such nice coworkers. (I see I lost the quote box since I took out the pictures)

Your pic made me think of walking round Portobello market on a .. uk.youtube.com/watch?v=B8QcrF1oBwgNice bit of nostalgia, this and the Kinks' clips. Thanks, guys for posting. I was born and brought up in the East End of London and lived in a block of flats above a small parade of shops, one of which was a Co-op where Steve Marriott's gran used to work! This was on the Commercial Road, the same one which inspired Richard Digance to pen a track of that name and I was hoping to find a clip of this - which would have been particularly appropriate here as Barrie B was his drummer at the time - without success, so, to represent my old manor, this'll have to suffice: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=w4GdZ_gBxH8&feature=relatedOh! It appears not to work, so, if you can still be bothered after all this palaver: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=w4GdZ_gBxH8&feature=relatedBtw, I also have a (very tenuous) Kinks link. I shared a place in Muswell Hill, North London (ref: The Kinks' Muswell Hillbillies album) and one of my flatmates, who worked in a grocer's, served Ray Davies with a can of soup! I believe it was Campbell's Cream of Chicken! Cheers, Jioffe.

Any mention of Steve Marriott gives me an excuse to post this masterpiece imo. I keep playing cat and mouse on utube with this one - it keeps getting deleted. Question - What kind of Led Zep if Marriott had been lead singer ?" uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Pyg13MPGiSM
