Yes great times and OK with the £200 flutes he used to play and destroy . I bet Ian will never do that type of thing again these days with his £15.000 plus Powell flutes £15,000 for a metal pipe with a few holes in. That's a lot

The lush, luxurious sound of the 19.5K Rose Gold flute owes its characteristic richness to the high density of this alloy. With a gold content of over 80%, the addition of copper gives the sound flexibility and color Powell- the "Stradivarius" of flutes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the way he is dressed, it looks like the video clips showing the spinning flutes took place during the SFTW tour (1977). I am sure by that time Ian could afford different flutes for different purposes: the recording studio, stage theatrics, etc. I found this video to be interesting- can you hear the difference between a cheap and an expensive flute?

I am sure by that time Ian could afford different flutes for different purposes: the recording studio, stage theatrics, for scratching his rear end, etc. I found this video to be interesting- can you hear the difference between a cheap and an expensive flute? Well the difference between metals and the sound they make in the flute world is a subject you can find whole forums discussing and is a big bag of worms with us flute players . Having said that many players agree that the quality of the construction of the instrument and it's intonation come first over what it is made from. Many players once they have a instrument they are happy with just change the headjoint to make an "improvement" . That can not only be different metals for the whole headjoint but also other metals in the lip-plate and even a different metal in the riser ( that's the whole in the headjoint) . It can become an obsession for some players changing and trying out different headjoints and you need deep pockets for that road . I have come to a personal conclusion over the years to buy the best instrument you can afford and practice, practice practice!I have an Altus 907 inline, open hole flute which you can see on the forum banner I put a Robert Bigio Zirconium Stopper and crown in my solid silver headjoint, which is another way to improve/change the sound of a flute. That was a bit of a controversial thing back in the day but now is accepted as a good upgrade by most players. This was a test done years ago by Sir James Galway for his group forum ( I was a member). You will spot is goes black and white when he is playing different flutes so you can't tell what metal or flute it is. Then you had to pick what you believed to be gold and the best sound and post it on the group. I can't remember the exact results, but I do remember it being surprising with many choosing a solid silver model over gold. There is now a list of the flutes under the video which wasn't there at the time of first posting. Sometimes it not what you have but what you can do with it I've read all of Ian's write up over the years on the flutes he has had. He didn't pickup "better" flutes until the 80's with Peal 600 range. I tried one and it wasn't to my liking, I had a Yamaha 221 at the time . He didn't start playing Powell 2100 and 3100 and Sankyo Silversonics until the early nineties. I wouldn't say "Powell- the "Stradivarius" of flutes" but they are one of the top makers in the world.

Very informative and interesting-Thanks, ash!
It must be in your position as a flute player that you were able to meet Ian Anderson, and this is possibly discussed elsewhere on this website.
Even after four years of being a member here, there are many sections of the JTForum that I have yet to explore...

Even after four years of being a member here, there are many sections of the JTForum that I have yet to explore... Not sure if there is anywhere on here just for the flutist. There are the odd thread like this link. I guess a thread could be started in the Questions section.I may just do that Yes I have asked Ian the odd question about flute playing but I didn't meet him because I'm a player, more's the pity. I have one question lined up for him when I go to Cheltenham Town Hall in April. I'm hoping I will get my question in. The last time I went to ask him a question at Lower Basildon church someone asked the question I had in mind. . Anyway now I have a new question which I've never heard anyone ask before

Maiocco Models: Jethro Tull - Piper II Model Build LINK “Sitting on a park bench”; the opening lyric and guitar riff to Jethro Tull’s iconic album “Aqualung.” This build pays tribute to this recording depicting the band’s leader Ian Anderson on stage with his alter ego, Aqualung.

Jethro Tull The Piper II Aqualung 1/7 Scale Figure LINK This approximately 1:7 scale kit is a new rendering of Posthumous Productions’ The Piper kit. Kit includes a depiction of the homeless man appearing in the distance (original homeless man rendering was a shadow style pixelated image). Both the Piper and homeless man stand atop a miniature LP record base with original LP label style lettering. Figure sculpture by: David Grant Aqualung figure by: Ray Santoleri Box art and instructions by: Alicia Figurelli Note: Kit is for the advanced modeler

It's horrible......nothing like Ian's face or the homeless man's face....and more importantly the hands on the flute are both in the wrong place, you would think that anyone making such a thing would get that right..... It's not being picky, a flute player couldn't have his hands there A real fan would never buy something like this, only for someone who doesn't know Jethro Tull from Uriah Heep...

It's only a model kit which takes lots of experience and ability to create. Art is always in the eye or imagination of each artist. "Uriah Heep" ?

I would say it looks odd because there is no G# lever on the flute which makes it looks like the hands are too far apart. Having said that the left hand just needs to go a bit to the right in relationship to the joint where the headjoint goes into the body of the flute. The right is in the correct place with regards the little finger on the E flat lever key . I've never seen one of these models yet that gets the hands and flute correct. Maybe one day, but I'm sure a good modeller could fix this on assembly.

It's just my honest opinion, if others like it that's fine. No problem Many things I see on online are never perfect in detail. Ian needs to authorize an action figure with all instruments just like other stars have done.
