alba? not sure what you mean? he was born in glasgae but his mother was a geordie and theres never been any doubt about where he thinks he comes from. he regularly comes back to newcastle and there are so many references in his lyrics to the north east, there is little doubt about where he sees his roots ! i mean, hes got a geordie accent thicker than mine!!!!

Mr Knopfler, like his current tour collaugue Mr Dylan are actually members of my tribe...they are, indeed, stars of David.....Knopfler even looks like the yid runner in Chariots of Fire.

He was seven when he left Glasgow for Newcastle. I'll give you that ;D
I reckon it's where your brought up and how much you want to blend in with your friends on the street that marks the man/woman.

MK is one of martins fave guitarists isnt he! i'd love it if martin played one of mks albums or appeared as a guest on tour. Anyway Get Lucky is wot i'm listening to at the moment and it has so many great lyrics on it.

Blending in on the street meant something different in the 60's ;D It was more to do with conkers/marbles/football and less do with guns/low slung trousers and rap.

i'm listening to Get Lucky by Mark Knopfler. a brilliant album full of celtic inflection and twists. i wonder if IA and MK could ever work together. theres only three years in age between them! unbelievable. MK is, (along with Sting) perhaps my hometowns most famous son. i'll be buying the new MK album when it comes out next month. It appears MK's gone back to his roots since he dissolved Dire Straits. I saw Dire Straits in concert and they were terrific live. My own "solo" favourite of MK's is "Sailing To Philadelphia" but having said that most, if not all, of what he records is good stuff. Seems years now since Dire Straits were thought of as a pub rock band before they hit the big time with "Sultans Of Swing" although, as is the case with Tull, MK is seen as Mr. Straits in the same way as IA is seen as Jethro Tull by the throng of journalists and ill-informed music writers.

I asked the question on a Glasgow Forum where in Glasgow Mark was from well blow me down with a feather ! he's from the same part as myself -so Snaffler or John the next time your talking to him mention Earl St/South St and he'll smile ;0 Great song which mentions his Glasgow roots and where his dad worked at Albion motors Scotstoun making the truck called the Albion Reiver. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albion_MotorsSouthern bound from Glasgow town, she's shining in the sun My Scotstoun lassie, on the border run We're whistling down the hillsides and tearing up the climbs I'm just a thiever, stealing time In the Border Reiver. Three hundred thousand on the clock and plenty more to go Crash, box and lever, she needs the heal and toe She's not to cold in winter but she cooks me in the heat I'm a six foot driver but you can adjust the seat In the Border Reiver Sure as the sunrise, that's what they say about the Albion Sure as the sunrise, that's what they say about the Albion She's an Albion, she's an Albion The ministry don't worry me my paperwork's alright They can't touch me, I got my sleep last night Its knocking out a living wage in nineteen sixty nine I'm just a thiever, stealing time In the Border reiver. Sure as the sunrise, that's what they say about the Albion Sure as the sunrise, that's what they say about the Albion She's an Albion, she's an Albion

They appeared 3 times on tv their entire career all on the beatclub, on the public television channel in germany. i wouldn't consider this band to be a "band on tv" during their era S 5: Ep 4 Show 50: December 31, 196912/31/69 S 4: Ep 12 Deep Purple, Humble Pie, The Move, Tim Rose, Jimmy Ruffin, 3 Dog Night, others 8/30/69 S 5: Ep 11 Atomic Rooster / Edgar Broughton Band / Dr. John / Steamhammer / Jethro Tull 8/15/70

'English Towns' by the mighty Stranglers in case anyone cares to go beyond the censors. A younger bike messeneger friend introduced me to the joys of the Stranglers in about 1981...years before Ian admitted they had caught his ears and attention. Saw them three nights in a row when they played in the Bay Area in 1982 and wasn't bored for a second...they were amazing. Lost interest after Hugh Cornwell quit in about 90 or 91 but suspect both the latter day Stranglers and Hugh Cornwell's solo stuff would be well worth checking out.
