In 2012, the measure was full and Ian Anderson dissolved the musical partnership with guitarist Martin Barre. For 43 years, the division of labor with Anderson as author and Barre as arranger, who was also responsible for complex song structures, held. As you know, Ian Anderson was back in the starting blocks with a new band and "Thick as a Brick 2" while Martin Barre took a break to play acoustic guitar (CD "Away With Words") and the blues (CD " To devote to Order of Play "). Unlike Ian Anderson, Martin Barre (72) deliberately goes to small clubs to evoke sweat and immediacy of the early years. Tull was all about self-promoter Ian Anderson. In the Mainz concert, the absence of his mandolin, acoustic guitar and flute was indeed on, but it was (even without an organ) a top concert. Bassist Alan Thompson (Rick Wakeman & John Martyn Band) plays a powerfully pumping bass that is constantly in motion. Although vocalist and guitarist Dan Crisp does not quite match the tone of Ian Anderson, in 2008 he recorded a celebrated solo album with Fairport Convention musicians. Jonathan Joseph is a powerfully dynamic drummer whose variable playing makes a great deal of success. Interesting are unexpected songs that have not played Jethro Tull for decades. So after the opener "Minstrel in the Gallery" there is the eighties single "Steel Monkey, followed by a bluescover by Bobby Parker. The title song of the Barre LP "Back to Steel" shows that even new songs rock. The snow-white hair falls over his eyes as he talks about his supposed memory lapses that make him appear half naked in the lobby. Nevertheless, Barre shines all over his face, as he has sunbathed while strolling through the city, which has swept away his notoriously bad British mood in no time. In England, not only weather and Brexit are horrible for him. "It's amazing, but true": The Germans have the better cars, the better food, a good wine to which he awards in the second half, and the prettier women. "At least we had the Beatles," he lays dry and serves "Eleanor Rigby" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". The "Cross Road Blues" by Robert Johnson Barre plays as the only acoustic piece on the mandolin. Rarely heard Tull songs are "Sea Lion" and "Nothing to Say" from the album "Benefit". The rest are acclaimed rock classics such as Sweet Dream, Skating Away, Teacher, Fat Man, and Song for Jeffrey from the first album, This Was, which he learned from his Jethro Tull predecessor Mick Abrahams. With the additions "Locomotive Breath" and "Aqualung" he hits the nerve of the aged with him audience.

Photo: Gerd MecklenborgTwist. Mr. Martin "Lancelot" Barre has also thrilled his fanbase with his virtuoso guitar playing in his third gig in the home town Twist. Barre is listed in music journals as one of the world's top 20 guitarists, and the 72-year-old multi-instrumentalist once again proves that this predicate is true in the stately home town. Many Jethro Tull fans had come to Emsland to hear the songs of the legendary prog rock band rearranged by Martin Barre . Because Martin was 49 years the guitarist of Jethro Tull and was considered the "Kapellmeister" of frontman and flutist Ian Anderson . For his guitar playing on the album "Crest of a Knave" Barre was awarded the 1988 Grammy. In addition to his successful time with Jethro Tull, he shared the stage with artists such as Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, Gary Moore, Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac. Interesting were the rockier arrangements of the well-known Tull numbers, which have an acoustic character in their original form, and some very rock Tull arrangements presented the Martin Barre band in a "soft" robe. Always present and captivating, the incredibly virtuoso and multi-faceted guitar playing of Master Barre. Bassist Alan Thompson plays a deep pumping bass and vocalist Dan Crisp turns out to be an ideal "second guitarist". Jonathan Joseph drums powerfully and dynamically. It started with a rock version of "Minstrel in the Gallery" and then seamlessly "Steel Monkey", a typical 80s rock number, followed by a juicy blues from the pen of Bobby Parker. And also Martin's own numbers are really rocking, like "Back to Steel". But the 72-year-old has to fight visibly with the enormous heat on the stage of the home town. Again and again he has to wipe his sweaty and fogged lenses. So he decides to remove the glasses, blinks sheepishly, but then radiates again at the next guitar solo over the whole face. Then Barre reveals to the Twister audience that he would very much like to be a guitarist for a Beatles cover band and serves "Eleanor Rigby" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". Strong versions of Tull rarities songs like "Sea Lion" and "Nothing to Say". Complex the version of "Fat Man" and grandiose the arrangement of "Teacher". The originally pure acoustic song "Skating Away", the band gives as a hard rock number. And of course in the acclaimed encore "Lokomotive Breath" steams through the miller's house, and at "Aqualung" the temperature rises to a felt 50 degrees. A hot but great evening in the Heimathaus Twist.

'Nothing to say' The Martin Barre Band at The Bluesgarage One of my favourite Tull songs, but why did Martin spoil it by doing all the noodling at the end solo? Trying to cram in as many notes as possible isn't big and isn't clever. He should have stuck to the original beautiful soulful solo that he played on the record.........leave the shredding to guys that are good at it Martin, Gary Moore, Joe Bonamassa, and dare I say it, Florian......... I have never liked Martin's solo's, he goes over the top trying to impress, it doesn't work for me. Does anyone agree

I don't think he tries to impress. He plays lines that compliment the song. And as far as shredding goes, Martin could outplay everyone on that list. I've studied Martin's guitar lines for years. Trust me on this.

At the 4:04 to 4:40 minute mark, there seems to be a little extra thrown in for improvisation purposes. Yes, the traditional version is quite good but... I feel this has a new level of fun which Martin likes to add. Considering the venue and the amazing artwork it brings out a new style which Martin may be feeling. Also, it's the 50th Anniversary Tour which can be very good for the moment each performance creates.
I LIKE IT
