September 21. 1924...My mother born in the Jewish quarter of a Polish town without vowels: Pzymzyl. Most of her family perished in WWII...the Nazis struck hard and fast in that part of Eastern Europe but my mother and a few of her siblings and cousins got out in 1938 and made their way to Tel Aviv, in Palestine where the oldest brother manufactured suitcases with trick bottoms and hidden compartments in order to facilitate all kinds of document smuggling throughout the war and beyond. My mother ended up in the Israeli Air Force for the war of Independence fought in 1948, when the British divided their Palestine holdings along a squiggly line betwen Jews and Arabs. This resulted in a job working for the nascent Israeli airline, El Al, which helped support her family until she signed up for a matchmaking service in 1956 and married my father, sight unseen, in Paris in March of 1957 and they returned to Denver, Colorado, USA...where he had already found work...her carrying me as the truest example of first generation American...made in Europe...delivered in Denver. yes, there will be a quiz. And I better call my Mom.

24th September In 1916 A local policeman PC Smith rounded up and took into custody the crew of the German Zeppelin LZ-76 that had been forced down near Colchester. The airship crash-landed in a field after being shot down by British fighters led by 2nd Lt. Alfred Brandon, a New Zealand pilot serving with the Royal Flying Corps. According to the Time-Life book, "Epic of Flight; The Giant Airships,” they were soon confronted by a lone English policeman riding his bicycle. Böcker said to the policeman: "Can you tell me how far we are from Colchester? "Never mind about Colchester," he replied; "You come along with me." As for PC Smith, he was promoted to Sergeant and for ever after was known as “Zepp”. He died in 1977 at the grand old age of 94.
