Has there been a survey on worst Tull album?
My votes: 1. Under wraps (horrible sound, only one memorable song) 2. A (horrible sound, only one good song, although it is a very very good one) 3. Dot Com (distinctly overrated, no song that I particularly like, although the sound is not bad) 4. Broadsword and the Beast (a few good songs, but annoying electronic sound) 5. Warchild (a decent album, but not compared to Tull's other 70s albums) 6. Benefit (a bit disappointing after Stand Up) 7. Thick as a brick (my vote for most annoying and most overrated tull album)
Most underrated albums: 1. Roots to branches 2. Passion play

I for one wouldn't say that APP is underrated, more misunderstood by many music lovers and critics but then I feel you have to listen to some Tull albums with one thought about the era in which they were recorded and written. Benefit is for me a classic example of this and is still, and will remain, one of my favourites. I get it in the neck for disliking TOTRnR......, not so much for the songs but for the concept. It still gets a listen but I feel that it should have been so much better and hopefully if Steven Wilson gets his hands on it one day he'll re-jig the whole album and make it a better listening experience imho.

1) Too Old to Rock 'n Roll -- No great songs, although a couple come close.
2) Catfish Rising -- Too many boring tracks.
3) This Was -- Nice first effort, some great material, but doesn't have a patch on most of the stuff that came later.

Tull's worst wins a Grammy - I like that, that's a Tull life.
Redemption to: (I like these two together) Farm On The Freeway Jump Start
& I really don't mind: Said She Was A Dancer Dogs In The Midwinter The Waking Edge

The Tull albums I never play are Under Wraps and everything since. From the golden era Too Old To Rock n Roll... is the weakest in my view. Couple of good tunes but was never able to get into it at all although I do try every now and then! Warchild would be my second weakest from this period although it has grown on me in recent years. Its funny, the one album I never liked when I first got into Tull 30 odd years ago was Benefit. I played it again about 10-15 years after I first bought it and thought it was simply brilliant! One of my fav Tull albums ever since. Odd how your tastes change as you get older and albums you once didn't like suddenly make sense.

From Worst to Better (in my opinion)
01) Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to Die! (1976) [Salamander has the same acoustic guitar as Cold Wind to .... Not an inspired album] 02) Under Wraps (1984) [Too much Drum Machine] 03) A (1980) [couple of good tracks like "Black Sunday" and "Flingdale Flyer"] 04) War Child (1974) [Maybe I like only "Bungle"] 05) The Jethro Tull Christmas Album (2003) [More a compilation than a true studio album] 06) Catfish Rising (1991) [good studio album, not Ian's voice] 07) This Was (1968) [proto "Jethro", not mature, but a very good blues album] 08) J-Tull Dot Com (1999) [good album with 2 or 3 great tracks "Spiral", "Awol" and "Wicked Windows"] 09) Roots to Branches (1995) [Better than Dot Com, a lot of good songs] 10) Stormwatch (1979) [Weaker of folk trilogy but a very good progressive rock album] 11) Songs from the Wood (1977) [Great Folk Prog album, title track is masterpiece] 12) Minstrel in the Gallery (1975) [Jethro Tull in better shape] 13) Heavy Horses (1978) [The One I like much from folk prog trilogy] 14) Rock Island (1989) [Great dark hard rock album] 15) A Passion Play (1973) [Tull at their best] 16) Stand Up (1969) [History of Tull, Masterpiece #5] 17) The Broadsword and the Beast (1982) [love this folk prog album dominated by synthesizer. Vettese rules!] 18) Benefit (1970) [Masterpiece #4, Nothing (else) to say] 19) Crest of a Knave (1987) [Masterpiece #3, "Budapest" and "Farm" real great songs] 20) Aqualung (1971) [Masterpiece #2] 21) Thick as a Brick (1972) [Masterpiece #1]

Worst to least worst: Dot Com Roots to Branches Rock Island
Under Wraps would have made the list until I heard a recording of the concert from the U.W. tour at wolfgangsvault.com. It's one of the best Tull shows U've ever heard. The U.W material is incredible live. So sad that there were no live drums on the album because the material is awesome when presented properly. I highly encourage any Tull fan to listen to that concert and then tell me the UW material is bad.

Most Tull consumers think of 1979 as the big before/after in the band's history...but in the voice department, which critically effected future compositions and which old songs would be retired forever vs playable....1984 was the before/after year...ironic that Ian was 'At Apogee' as he sang that song.

84 tour was thunderous. Blew out his voice for good...but thunderous ! Yes it was. Thunderous is a great way to describe it. BOOM. The live show was one of the best. I remember I saw it a few times in Sept '84 and the album had just recently come out. It took a lot of fans at the gigs by surprize. OneeightiesDuck. Got to fly................to see Martin Barre. I'll report back as soon as.

I'm sure i have the song order wrong but didn't they, that year, do something very unTullish...play without stopping for breath or blah blah something like: Brick,Bass solo, Skating Away, Sunday feeling, minstrel and maybe another song or two or Locomotive breath ?

I still think that it would be great if Ian would release an anniversary CD containing the original Under Wraps, and a copy of the original CD with a live drummer... I mean... 1984 - 2014... That's 30 years! Let's celebrate it with Barriemore Barlow blasting away... (... okay... I'm just dreaming...) ...This song is really about loving a CD... Isn't it?

Thank you for the links... but... Oh my God what? Just curious... Just a bit excited to find the concert video with Tull performing at such a high musical level. The members of this particular incarnation of the band were all quite accomplished musicians and this is amongst my favorite lineup. Those of us who are also really into Zappa can really relate to the performance. Frank would likely have been impressed had he had the inclination to listen in.

I was at that gig where Ian lost voice and temper...a very gloomy Thanksgiving the next day with un-usable Tull tickets in hand.

Sorry Karma41 that it took so long to respond. I had a very busy day... but anyway... Great find! I remember when Under Wraps was released... I thought that it was a great album, with great songs... I like Zappa too... So here is a Zappa song... (... I always have an excuse to play great music...) ... So, shake your body... Or should I say Sheik Yerbouti? This, should be shouted: "On more time for the world!!"

difficult for me to quantify. there are albums i accept as one of the worst, but some of them actually have more life and playability than others, and that ive listened to WAY more than i should, like under wraps. then again, where benefit was once my favorite album, ive soured on about half of it over the years. so its a contest between objectively worst album and album i like/listen to the least.
fortunately, i think i can say rock island meets both those qualifications. there are three or four songs i like to listen to, at all, and i either skip part of them (rock island) or feel grated on by the attempt to be dire straits.
on another note, i simply cant agree with most things said about too old etc. id call it most underrated. crazed institution is exceptional, and from a dead beat to an ol greaser is gorgeous, and fabulously written, building, and building, and building. i love quizz kid and taxi grab, and the chequered flag is great. i like big dipper a lot. i dont know that id call it a great song. oddly, im not a big fan of the title track, and its an objectively great song. but i like pied piper a lot too.

This is of course a very personal opinion, but I find two thirds of Under Wraps and most of Rock Island… well, extremely poor. I find it hard to believe it’s Tull. Those two are the weakest by far.
On another category there’s This Was and Catfish Rising, which are not properly weak, but I find them rather dull. I’m not too fond of Roots to Branches either, it has some good songs but I can’t get hooked. Dot Com has pretty decent stuff but it’s very watered-down Tull, and finally there’s Benefit, which I think is very good, but I find it hard to listen to the whole album at once, for some reason.
