those under two minutes. The beautiful songs (all of them really) that appeared for the first time in Aqualung, I believe, and seemed to say an awful lot of what was going on in young Ian's heart and mind. I loved when listening to Aqualung and subsequent albums the impact of the short song alongside the others. I don't believe that the spoken ones that he's doing now have anywhere near the same effect mainly for the reason that he himself said in a very recent interview - "I'm not an actor"
A list (please add what I've forgotten)
Just Trying.. Hymn 43 Slipstream Cheap Day Return Wondr'ing Aloud Nursie Wondr'ing Again Cheerio

A few seconds over two minutes but a top notch short classic.

Are these all short enough?
Salamander, Set Aside, Bad Eyed and Loveless, Under Wraps II, Grace, Dun Ringhil ?

On Preston platform Do your soft shoe shuffle dance Brush away the cigarette ash Thats falling down your pants
And then you sadly wonder Does the nurse treat your old man The way she should
She made you tea Asked for your autograph What a laugh

I think 'Cheap Day Return' is the ultimate perfect shortie....Dun Rinhil and Under Wraps close behind but nothing touches the single snap shot mood perfection of 'Cheap day return' which defines a whole aspect of Tull.

There's actually quite a few of these. I love the version of Nursie you can hear on A Little Light Music (the original is less than 2 minutes, this version is 2 and a half). March the Mad Scientist has grown on me over the years too. There's some nice stuff on the Chateau d'Isaster tapes which is under two minutes (Animelée, Tiger Toon), although there are better Tull "quickies" out there.

I even include Mother Goose (although it is longer) as one of the acoustic songs that make the album special...... Great post n/r.....

Your so right Mr Green You can't underestimate the impact of those short heartfelt songs in between the big gutsy classics. It's one of the components of why I loved/love Tull. I repeat what I said about the short songs in TAAB2 and HE - I don't know if he was trying to replicate the original short classics or just using them as fillers but they don't compare in any shape or form to the originals. I just wish he would leave it at that or an updated version of Just trying To Be - the lyrics reflecting a sixty year old man rather than a boy. There was a time when you were so young and walked in their way. They made you feel they loved you all-seeing they say. You're going wrong if their game you don't play And that the song I sing will leave you astray. Unfeeling, feel lonely rejection, unknowing, know you're going wrong. And they can't see that we're just trying to be, and not what we seem, and even now believe that it's not real and only a dream. For two minutes (or under) you had a beautiful musical intro (on some) and then succinct lyrics in the early (short) songs that made such an impact and still do. Love this version
