Helping the Heroes Benefit Concert Join us on Sunday, October 5, 2014 for a special night with Ian Anderson to honor our veterans, first responders, and to raise awareness of the global threat from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). All proceeds from the concert will go to support programs helping our heroes and responding to the threat from IEDs. Over 84% of all Servicemember injuries and deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq were due to IEDs. No other weapon in U.S. Military history caused more casualties. An average of 500 IED events occur each month worldwide - and those exclude Afghanistan and Iraq. Where IEDs are used in populated areas, over 91% of the victims are civilians. In the U.S. IED use by juveniles in connection with school violence is on the rise placing first responders at particular risk. About the ConcertThe concert will raise funds for Partners International Foundation and its Global Campaign against Improvised Explosive Devices including support to wounded veterans and other IED victims. Legendary progressive rock musician Ian Anderson, together with his band, will perform a selection of Jethro Tulls’ greatest hits. Special guests include honored veterans and performances by the Virginia Military Institute Commanders The main event will be a concert by legendary progressive rock musician Ian Anderson at The National Theater in Richmond, Va (Enclosure 4). Ian Anderson is the founder and front man of the legendary rock band, Jethro Tull. Anderson and his band will perform a selection of Jethro Tull's Greatest Hits. Anderson is donating his talent to the show at no cost. We are requesting donations and sponsor support to cover the necessary venue and support costs for the show, as well as related evens d travel for our special guest Veterans. Over the past two years, Anderson has hosted a number of wounded veterans, police and firefighters during his U.S. tour to help raise awareness of the I.E.D. issue, as well as the needs of veterns and first responders globally The show will open with a special guest performance by the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Commanders, under the direction of Colonel John Brodie. The VMI "Commanders" were first formed in 1917, and since then, they have provided music for dances and social events at VMI and throughout Virginia. Most recently, the Band played in Paris, France (March 206), at the U.S. Ambassador's residence and at the Ecole Polytechnique. Ways You Can Support This Event If you're unable to attend the concert or associated events, you can help support our brave veterans and programs by donating here, or through our other on-line donation site. You can also donate as an individual, group, organization or corporation at one of our sponsorship levels. Contributions can also be made via mobile pledging by texting “IED” to number 41444 on your smart phone. War Child Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson gives back to America’s veterans with a concert of support for IED casualties at the National.BY RICH GRISET September 30, 2014 www.styleweekly.com/richmond/war-child/Content?oid=2122784Manuel Noriega wasn't happy. Seeking refuge at a Vatican diplomatic mission in December 1989, the military dictator was under music assault by U.S. troops. Noriega purportedly hates rock 'n' roll, and troops were treating him to nonstop, ear-splittingly loud music for days as a psychological warfare tactic. At the request of then-Army Maj. Bob Morris, Jethro Tull's "Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll" was played in the offending lineup. This weekend, Morris and Jethro Tull singer and flautist Ian Anderson will team up again to assist American troops, staging a concert at the National to support those who have been affected by improvised explosive devices. Commonly referred to as IEDs, the bombs have been responsible for 84 percent of American casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan. "For many years I've been encountering the realities of IEDs and various forms of terrorist attacks that have been going on in the U.K.," Anderson says from his production office in England. "Because I perform a lot of concerts in America, I feel I owe something to a country that has been very kind to me over the last 46 years." Based in Yorktown, Morris created the nonprofit Global Campaign Against Improvised Explosive Devices, which helps those affected by IEDs around the world. Knowing that Anderson was involved with similar efforts in the United Kingdom, Morris left a note for him after one of his concerts. Anderson emailed him back, and the two have been working to bring a show to Richmond that will benefit troops and first responders. Morris says Anderson is deeply devoted to the cause. "He's allowed me to take wounded veterans to his shows," Morris says. "You don't know what a huge morale boost [the event] is for some of these veterans." Opening for Anderson is the Virginia Military Institute Commanders jazz band, which will play rock, jazz and R&B favorites. The military college has a special connection with the event. "Several cadets I've taught at VMI have been wounded by IEDs after they graduated," band director John Brodie says. "It's really tough to visit a student you've taught at the hospital and see that their leg is gone." Concert proceeds will benefit three different causes, including helping veteran Steve Baskis realize his dream of competing in the Paralympics. Baskis lost his vision to an IED in Iraq six years ago. Since then, he's worked to inspire others, undertaking such endeavors as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Money raised will help Baskis get the unique equipment he needs to compete. With IEDs also playing roles in domestic tragedies such as school shootings and the Boston Marathon bombings, the event will raise funds to help local police and firefighters create a protocol to respond to them. It also will help support efforts to get veterans into the work force through Positive Vibe Café and other businesses. A day before the concert, the nonprofit restaurant will hold a benefit dinner during which attendees will be challenged to navigate a meal without sight. Inspiration comes from experiences of IED victims who become visually impaired from the explosions. Dinner in the Dark will be cooked by former County Club of Virginia chef Gary Whitecotton, and dessert will include visual-impairment goggles that replicate impairments such as tunnel vision and myopia. "You've got to figure out how to eat and drink without seeing," Positive Vibe founder Garth Larcen says. "Sometimes visual impairment is overlooked. It's a problem with what these explosives do." For Anderson, it all comes back to helping the troops. "Those who are sent to do battle essentially on behalf of us may often be seen to be fighting a futile war that is not of their choosing," Anderson says. "But as serving men and women, they're obliged to go. Let's remember that these folks go out there and risk their lives in order to do something in the name of Western democracy." "Ian Anderson and the Best of Jethro Tull Helping the Heroes" happens Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the National, 708 Broad St. "Dinner in the Dark" is Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. at Positive Vibe Café, 2825 Hathaway Road. Cornershot: Making music at VMIwww.roanoke.com/life/cornershot/cornershot/article_54c5d9b1-f66d-54e2-8ab2-ce75b617b4b2.htmlFor band members at VMI, these are exciting times. The military college’s jazz band played with rock ’n’ rollers Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull on Sunday in Richmond. We wrote recently in this space about that gig, which was to raise awareness of and money for the devastation caused by improvised explosive devices. If you missed it, read it at tinyurl.com/o9kxbsu. Meanwhile, the school’s regimental and pipe bands have a high-profile gig of their own, and a long time to prepare for it. Those bands have been selected to march in the Tournament of Roses Parade, set for Jan. 1, 2016, in Pasadena, California. It will be the second time in less than 10 years that VMI is represented in that iconic New Year’s Day event. The band director, Col. John Brodie, took them to the parade in 2008. According to a VMI news release, the school is unusual among those marching in the Tournament of Roses Parade, because it has pipes. Brodie and Maj. Burt Mitchell, who directs the pipe band, will take about 140 musicians with them in late December 2015, where they will do some sightseeing and meet with West Coast-based VMI alumni before marching. — Tad Dickens

Thanks Jim for posting the photos for me. The concert in Richmond was wonderful. All bare bones, no videos or special effects. They even played under The National’s hot venue stage lights. All to save overhead cost and pass the savings along to benefit the cause. Ian gave a nice heart felt talk about donations, as if the tickets didn’t cost enough.
The crowd was packed with some extreme Tull fans, doing what extreme Tull fans do. Hooting, Hollering and Singing. It was a shortened set list, only 3 HE songs, and he added Wooten Basset Town. It was really sort of nice not to hear the telephone ring during the middle of TAAB.
The Photo Op was quite a surprise; they certainly get you in and out. Ian is a busy man, just a quick hello; a flash and you’re out. I did get him to sign my program, and then all the guys added their signatures at the November Tull Convention. I love it, a keepsake for sure.
Sorry for the long absence from the Forum. I hope things will calm down for me early next year. I have lots to look forward too. I have decided to retire in Dec.2015. One More Year! I hope Ian is still playing some concerts. No telling how many I will get to see at that point. The Tull Convention in NY was exceptional also. I guess that’s another thread though.
Bye for now, Metta
