I was listening to Nightcap for the first time in ages today and had forgotten how brilliantly IA sings A Small Cigar. Is this his greatest vocal performance? And if not what is?

Ooh. That's tough! A Small Cigar is one of my favorites. Now, here's my list of ones that spring to mind - adding A Small Cigar to it - and you can maybe see why I would have a hard time making up my mind! - A Small Cigar - Cheerio (not very long, but pretty voice vibrato on the sustained notes...) - Skating Away (some versions I like better than others, but it's still good just about any way he sings it...) - Commons Brawl (his voice just sounds so clear on this one, and it seems to have a bit of humor in it, too) - Lost In Crowds (one of my favorite newer ones...also because he seems to use emotion when he sings it....more vulnerable sounding) - Summerday Sands (an older one I've just re-discovered.) - The Whistler (So many elements of this song I like; it's hard to leave it off a list) - The Secret Language of Birds (don't know why I like it, but I do...) - Only Solitaire (another one I've been listening to lately...)

This is the best oxymoron I've ever heard. Ian Anderson/greatest vocals?!? Surely you jest.

How about Pibroch (Cap In Hand). One of my favourite IA vocals and band performance.

This is tricky! Suppose it brings in a bit of what's your favourite song as well . Been really into The Clasp for the last while and really like the way he sings that.
Dun Ringall - love the sweet lilting way he does that in a song with a slightly unusual rythmn.
Song for Jeffrey - UNIQUE - had never heard anything like that before ! ;D
Life's a Long Song - 'and you hear your voice croak' (which comes out like crook)..and then he pauses- love that !
and the list goes on and on .......

I'm not sure if these are the greatest vocal performances by Ian but they are among the most moving:
1) Strip Cartoon -- because it is sung so joyously; and 2) A Time for Everything -- because the singing projects the protagonist's pain so effectively 3) Witches' Promise -- because the singing is so beautiful, like everything else about the song
Obviously there are many, many others. In his heydey, Ian was a truly superb singer.

Oh, Minstrel In the Gallery: what`s style!
Weathercock: the two voices chorus kills me! Love it.
Back in the mid 70`s, IA had the most extraordinary voice in rock.

So many to choose from...really a lot of apples/oranges questions, I mean, how do you compare small cigar to big passion play? I have long blamed Black Sunday for blowing out his voice...a tremendous vocal song that he performed so well and so much up to his 1984 breakdown.

Baker Street Muse...and I agree...Lost in Crowds was best of show on Rupi...I have a friend who thinks Tull is shot so I played him Velvet Green then Lost in Crowds...he reconsidered!

"March The Mad Scientist"!!! It's short (under 2 mins.) but Ian sounds great.
