Too Old To Rock?Maybe this will be a shock to some but if ticket sales are any indication, I believe there are those who have become 'Too Old To Rock'.At my age I still enjoy new things and new ideas from someone who has always done it his way. The complex nature of this album has a few scratching their heads with frustration. The truth is it doesn't matter what we think. It's what Ian Anderson thinks! If Ian Anderson wants to perform a new concept album instead of re-doing all of 'Passion Play' live, it's all about what Ian thinks. I hope to god that Ian isn't doing anything from APP. He simply could not sing it. He was struggling with "The Hare That Lost His Spectacles" in 2010. With those still in mourning about Martin Barre guess what? He is still out there in Paris on Friday night. I suppose he hasn't paid any attention to what his own fans have said either. 'Ditch the extra Guitarist'. I have never read a single comment on the several music forums I belong to stating Martin should "ditch the extra guitarist". Never. This is particularly true because Martin is not using a keyboardist to accompany him, so it is required as back up. What I have read from fans is that Ian Anderson is not the same without Barre. Many times. I can provide ample proof, can you?

I play APP & HE together these days - APP always wins... Martin Barre being the difference... APP definitely wins Night and Day. Don't forget Barlow and Evan as they had a lot to do with it too. Barlow was freaking amazing on that tour while John Evan managed to play B3, Piano plus keep up with manually patch setting twin Minimoogs on the fly. No "memory bank" for analog synths back then.
Martin also played through HiWatt Amps back then and sounded much better than his later days over the boutique Soldano combo amp when Tull quieted down on stage and the sound overall was not as big as back in 73.

How many people think that Ian's talent wouldn't be the same without Martin? How many people are satisfied and willing to accept the change knowing that two great musicians are still playing and the likelihood of playing together again not ruled out? How many people understand that it's two individuals we're talking about here and not some conjoined musical twins?

I have no idea how Ian's songs would have been affected by Martin's absence. Nor does it bother me that they aren't playing together now. Take another of my rock heroes, Richie Blackmore, great in Deep Purple, better in Rainbow and still awesome but completely different in Blackmore's Night. To be honest I am quite surprised Tull lasted as long as it did. Most successful rock bands don't seem to last much longer than about 10 years. All I think is that Ian and Martin are like gin and tonic, ok on their own but better in combination. Would HE be different if they were still together? Almost certainly not. As to whether I'm too old to rock, well given I'm buying more music by new bands than I ever did 20 years ago, no I don't think I am too old.

Totally agree with the points Martin has deliberately tried to not just form 'another TUll tribute band' No Keyboards, little flute if any at times, twin lead guitar which works a treat. Very different versions of the songs ,his version of Brick is superb. Im sure he could have found an IA clone and keyboards but he has not done this - hats off to Martin. It seems to me on this forum IA can do no wrong ,it is very biased and perhaps should be called the Ian Anderson forum. Martin doesnt seem to get the lickings of a dog, remember he has devoted his whole musical career to Tull music. Whilst IA would obviuosly been successful im sure the other guys played a much bigger part than they get credit for. Barrie,Dave Palmer,Glen,Clive,Martin,John Evans all brought substance to the table which modelled the band's sound early on. Barrie said band member input was expected when he joined althoguh he also said the 'regime' changed when Jeffery left.

There are plenty of negative posts in various threads regarding Ian - quite a few from myself. There's also numerous threads dedicated to Martin - more than there is for other previous band members. There are those who think Martin should be given greater credit from Ian and that's fair enough as indeed other band members too however we can't do anything about that but we can discuss and speculate.

I'm an admitted Anderson freak - love for Ian Anderson's lyrics is why I'm here in the first place.I thought we were here to worship Ian Anderson the man behind the Tull. I'm trying to get Martin the credit he deserves so don't paint me with the same brush. I appreciate the weight of Martin Barre's guitar on the Tull sound.

A purer heavy metal album. Another heavy metal Grammy, HE might qualify for *spoken word Grammy as is . Great what if. *Per errationes ad astra comes alive in 5.1, such drama. Cheers

Puer Ferox Adventus is one of the best tracks I have ever heard. There we are I've wanted to get that of my chest all day. Job Done. OnePragmaticDuck Yes its 1 of Ians better tracks of late but this track no one seems to mention wipes the floor with it www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZiEvNLNADAI agree with you, Hardliner. Rupi's Dance is superlative; beautiful string arrangement, recorded in 2003. Ian was a lot younger and sounded it in his voice.
I'm happy that there has been Tabb2 and now Erraticus. I'm glad Ian still tours as he certainly does not have to anymore.
Puer Ferox... the opening suggests Dark Ages off of Stormwatch. I cannot stand though the keyboard pad drone that opens the track as it is a cheezy sound. But what's not to like in the track otherwise? The XK3 Hammond sounds great (good job O'Hara) and Florian's guitar sounds great on this, dare I say, Martin Barre-ish on the overdriven section. It is a great song. I'm glad he has Ryan singing verses too as it will not be so disconcerting live.
I also think" Doggerland" and others such as "Turnpike Inn" are very "Stormwatch" reminiscent and that was a very good record for Tull.
Actually Ian's vocals sound better on this album than on Tabb2, but I cannot help but pose that if he can sing this entire album on pitch, hitting every note square on, will it be this live? I don't hear autotune artifacts either but his vocals will likely not sound near as "on" live so as to how this "perfection" was achieved in recording I won't speculate, but it is more than "punching in" surely.
Even I lament the passing of the good old days of Tull and have to remind myself we're all lucky that something is yet going on in this era when I listen to now and compare back to then, which is an unfair comparison.

Barrie,Dave Palmer,Glen,Clive,Martin,John Evans all brought substance to the table which modelled the band's sound early on. Barrie said band member input was expected when he joined althoguh he also said the 'regime' changed when Jeffery left. Well, with all due respect, I myself think Martin should ditch the second guitarist and get a B3-Piano player instead, but it's Martin's band and he'll do what he wants. But you cannot take keyboards out of Tull music, they are essential. This being said, I was totally shocked seeing the Carl Palmer Band doing ELP music without a keyboardist and they were great (the bassist and guitarist were amazing). Three person band and all that sound!.
Regarding the bias you mention. I'm new here so I cannot say, but to me, Ian is Tull -period. He wrote all the songs, needless to say. Now to give Martin Barre his due, his "credited" additional music such as the whole middle of Minstrel is fantastic. He did this too on many other songs as you know.
Trivia :
In 1974, my wife and I walked into Nashville Coliseum early (a door was open and we just walked in -you could get away with that back then) (though we had tickets, of course (my avatar is a scan of that ticket). The band was on stage playing through snippets and noodling around between. After ten or so minutes of this, which we watched standing in the aisle right by the stage, Ian walked out with his acoustic, turned and glared at the band, who immediately froze (dead quiet) then Ian played and sang one verse of "Wondring Aloud" and left.
We walked up on the stage wings after as the band had stopped playing, Ian had left and they then were only milling around, and I said hi to Martin Barre and told him I got a big kick about his humor the year prior (when I kind of ended up following along to their lunch table at the Holiday Inn in Baltimore during the APP tour) when he ordered poached eggs and said "put them on a plate" to the waitress. He glared at me and said very loud in a condescending exaggerated British Accent tone "Poached Eggs? You sure it wasn't Eric Clapton"? I said uh...yeah I'm sure ..never mind and left the area as he kind of wasn't very nice.
Know who was nice though? John Glascock. Great guy! We were backstage after the show talking to him (wandered back) and he was on a pay phone in between talking to us and seemed very concerned about meeting someone for something which is all I'll say as I won't speculate further on that. He wouldn't own up though to the Songs From The Wood acapella being taped from the original "Harmonizer" recording and told me they all sang it live. I smiled.
But I have never forgotten that Martin Barre, that day, sorry to say, was kind of a prick. Granted, we shouldn't have been there and after that brief exchange I regretted having been.
My wife remarked after to me that the demeanor of Ian at soundcheck left her with the impression that the band were employees so far as he was concerned and said they looked as if they're all scared of him.
The Fully Authorized Tull Documentary, as many of you know, describe between the words a distance from Ian and an often unhappy environment according to Evan and Barlow.
So real life day to day, perhaps not the bowl of cherries one might imagine? Could have just been an off day too, cannot say....
____________
Footnote : which ends personal recollections as there are no more.... My son and I drove from Maryland to Akron Ohio to see Tabb2 (as, it figures, there then was no show date for the DC area as it did not appear until weeks after we bought the tickets, but we like road trips anyway). Akron was a desolate town that Sunday afternoon, empty, nothing open and we drove in early in the freezing cold and stood, just the two of us, near the parked tour bus that afternoon. We were freezing and after an hour, Ryan O'Donnell came out and said we should go somewhere and get warm cause Ian wouldn't arrive for another two hours probably, so we left, walked around and nothing was open, so after an hour we went back and waited. Probably 45 min or so later a car drove up by the tour bus and it was Shona driving. Ian got out, walked by us (we didn't intrude) said nothing and went in the Akron Civic Theatre. Shona followed him in but came out and walked over to us maybe 15 min later and said something like Oh it's been a day and said, I'll get those signed for you. So she took our vinyl cover and Tabb2 liner, went inside. We saw her through the window following Ian about ten minutes later and she smiled and gave us a thumbs up, came out 10 minutes later and handed us back the autographed items. She was really nice!!!
Ian did sign for his fans after the concert from his car. My son went up to the car from the fan line to Ian. When next it was my turn, I waved, said thanks to him from the line distance and left so the next person in line could go up to the car.
Ryan O'Donnell signed for all the fans also (came out from the bus)
Florian Ophale came out late from the venue, we said hi to him from the landing near the bus and he not only came over but to our surprise spent easily a half hour talking to us in the freezing cold. Pictures and all. Very very nice guy!! He seemed genuinely happy for our company. We were impressed.

I am in awe of HE coming so close on the heels of TAAB2. I am nearly as old as IA and have no where near the energy and stamina he has nor his creative drive and talents. TAAB2 was a delight live and I am anxiously awaiting my upcoming opportunity to hear HE live. 40+ years of total musical enjoyment. Few others have produced so prolifically and so perfectly while entertaining so completely.

Ive just started watching the Tull Classic Artists dvd. Right at the start in Blackpool is a brief still of the Blackpool Grammar School crest.....it says Meliora Sequamur at the bottom beneath the badge!! This may have been pointed out by some other eagle eyed fan already but i just thought if it hadn't it would be worth mentioning!
