All together now: Benefit & APP 5.1, hooray! New mixes for Benefit & APP later this year is my understanding. 5.1 Jethro Tull 'Benefit' - New Steve Wilson remixes coming? forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/jethro-tull-benefit-new-steve-wilson-remixes-coming.315710/#post-8795875Coming soon is a deluxe edition of Benefit (Ian Anderson had always disliked the mix of this album, so he worked together with Steven Wilson to capture the sound he always wished it had) which will contain several bonus tracks on a separate disc. The other deluxe edition is A Passion Play which will also contain newly remixed versions of the Chateau D'isaster Tapes (for those unfamiliar these tapes were an aborted concept album that was shelved and then A Passion Play was recorded instead). www.heartofmetal.net/t19654-jethro-tull-officialSteven Wilson - What's Next? forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/steven-wilson-whats-next.309635/ jethrotull.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=tour&thread=2132&page=6#35051 A couple of years ago, reissued "Aqualung" with Steven Wilson remix. What else have you worked with him? He was also responsible for the remix of "Thick As A Brick" original and the sequel mixed. Last year we were doing the remixes "Benefit", "A Passion Play" and tapes "Chateau d'Isaster", the original recordings of that album we did not finish in 1973, never completed. We intend to launch these reissues this year, with remixes in 5.1. It was fun to review that material.- Ian Anderson Thanks to (jtull07) Jim. With You There To Help Me - Info by Jim from Feb 14, 2013, HOORAY! "Do you still see me even here?'' (The silver cord lies on the ground.) "And so I'm dead'', the young man said over the hill (not a wish away). My friends (as one) all stand aligned although their taxis came too late.BEWARE: ...caution that the recent acquisition of EMI by Universal and Warner have a good chance of delaying the release dates because of the necessary work of integrating the label's holdings. forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/jethro-tull-benefit-new-steve-wilson-remixes-coming.315710/#post-8795908

Especially if they unearth something not yet available on 20 year or nightcap.

A remixed Benefit might hold major surprises, as that album has a lot of texture, and to my digi-ears, sounds somewhat extra compressed, due to the limitations of equipment back then, so this could be a good thing.
How bad is the "remastered" APP now that it needs a remix? Not convinced!

How bad is the "remastered" APP now that it needs a remix? Not convinced! Do you think that all the remastering is a fad doing the rounds at the moment ? It's certainly a thought I've had where the original recording really need no tampering with. APP is certainly a case in question. What might be appropriate would be to issue a disc along the lines of "Nightcap" with any additional music, including ALL the Chateau D'Isaster recordings and, in APP's case a remixing just getting rid of any clicks, rumbles, dropouts etc. The other thought I've had is that this may be a case of extending the copyright so that such items won't just go into "public domain" after 50 years such as has happened with recordings by other artists that were made in the fifties and very early sixties. I've read that this is the case with early Beatles recordings made before "Love Me Do" and certainly with very early Dylan tapes.

I do think that one aspect of music not so much talked about is boosting the capacity on the creative side, the positive, forward way down the path into the future. Let's see what the creative geniuses are doing with new high tech and portability options to radically improve recording possibilities. That affects what's created, as a side benefit. If I had the cash, I'd be using all this new digitech and these new fantastic studio mics at affordable prices, to record all sorts of things, ambient sounds, playing on location, and mixing tracks from various sources that way, capturing the natural resonance of various spaces, experimenting with all the basics again, because the standard way of recording is now so similar on all recordings. Recording has to get out of the studio brain, and into the field. I'd put three microphones on a vocal, four on an acoustic guitar, there are so many things ears pick up that one mic always misses.

That's a very good point you've made. One of my favourite blues musicians, and indeed one loved by many, is Robert Johnson. When Sony/BMG remastered his recordings in around 1990 they thankfully resisted the temptation to mess around with the recordings and only cleaned up the pops/crackles etc as much as they could. You have to wonder what Robert Johnson would have sounded like on record had he been born in the latter part of the 20th century and was recording now using all the technology available today.

Yes, the Robert Johnson songs were cleaned up a great deal, but they're still about 10% too fast. I've heard them slowed down about 10% and also by about 20%. The 20% slow-down was obviously wrong both in the vocal and the guitar behaviour. But the 10% slower songs had that open "live" sound about them, and it felt very real, the voice was just as impressive and the guitar playing I would say had more feel to it and less flash. When they release his whole list of recordings slowed down to be the original live speed, I think he'll get more fans.

I just slowed down my Robert Johnson songs by 10% as you suggested and it's an improvement. I used Transcribe! software to slow the songs down while maintaining the pitch and recorded them through my sound board using Replay Music 4 (Applian Techniologies). A friend was also pleasantly surprised by the slower tempo.

Just remember that the original was recorded on early vinyl or tape and to get the proper slowing down of the recording, everything has to be slowed down. You'd have to review your Transcribe! software to make sure it's allowing the vocal and guitar to truly be slowed down. I don't understand how you could be hearing it slowed down if the pitch is kept high. But I don't have that software, so I'll leave it to you to check.
