This summer 2013, Bonhams Auction House, LONDON will be auctioning a nine page hand-written letter written to me by I/A from his small room in Luton on December 20th 1967. In the letter, Ian tells of the departure of the old band 'John Evans Blues Band' back to Blackpool and the formation of the new band 'Jethro Tull'. The letter also contains lyrics written to me by Ian. I don't think they were ever published. This is one of two letters being auctioned, from a collection of over eighty letters, the bulk of which were written in 1967/1968/1969. This letter might be of interest to fans because Ian writes clearly about a time in Jethro Tull history when life had been particularly hard financially and marks the beginning of a significant change for Ian. I have treasured these historical documents and other items of personal memorabilia for nearly half a century and now feel it is time to let go.

Mercenary xxxxx, just share it with us. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Tommie - I've modified your post somewhat as it really wasn't a pleasent thing to say to a new member and reflects badly on the rest of the membership. Other places may let you get away with such things but frankly, not here. And on that score, you're yellow carded.

Would love to give it all word for word but copyright laws don't permit. Though I have given the original to Bonhams I made a copy to keep and I am looking at it now and thinking what is interesting? So this is for free. Nine pages long so page one of letter sent from 38 Studley Road, Luton Beds. Wed 20th Dec. Written from lonely one room cell on a cold winters night. (Change of heart) not particularly lonely or unpleasant. Quite a nice little room-very cosy-food, cigarettes, personal effects and money (bla bla bla) lots to say so chapter one. They arrived there on the 26th of November that is Tony, Glen and Ian the others drifted down by Wednesday.

Ah, c'mon Maddog.....I was just kidding. Besides, now she's reconsidered and decided to show it for free! It was just "tough love" on my part. And now you've ALL benefitted from my post. You now dont have to bid on it and spend exhorbitant amts of money....thanks to ME.
(Besides, MD, who loves you more than me?) I'm always giving you props for your wonderful posts/pics.
PLEASE! one more chance.....dont banish me to that OTHER board. You guys are much cooler (altho that's what I tell the other board) Besides, I dont know what "yellow-carded" means. Ask Steelmonkey......he knows I dont know much, other than Tull.

As for banishing you to the other place - I understand from my deeply embedded mole that you post there anyway so feel free to carry on there as you wish. Yes, I appreciate your "thoughts" about the memorabilia items and look forward to posting more in the future. MD

Hi Elmsiegirl, hope I got that right, I do know your real name, probably could find it in my old emails, but certainly I remember you. Had some edifying communication with you in 05 or 06, I can recall it involved speculation on shared suppositions that whatever your old buddy, and more, had pursued, he very likely would have been successful. Speaking for myself as regards one or two of his interviews that have addressed a wide range of world issues, one from 06 I think, some sort of world leader, politician, author, professor, spokesperson, not sure would surely have been within his grasp. Additionally speaking to someone who knew all those guys when they were kids, and thereby being able to make personal assessments without rancor, made my communication with you one of the more potent I have had as regards Jethro Tull. Quite certain that the day to day developments of Tullworld are of less but not no interest to you, and I extend my sincere welcome to you, Ray PS In fact now I recall, probably I had been looking at an ancient copy of the Tull fanzine A New Day, its reference to you was probably in 1990 or so, give or take 5 years lol, and had some really neat black and whites of you and Ian and all those guys in Blackpool back in your late teens or so. 2 minutes later. No, now I remember, you had started a book with a play on the This Was title though I cannot recall it exactly, I think you had written the first ten pages or so, which I saw and it was very interesting, I recall other things, but I forget if it was stuff you had communicated to me specifically, or had been mentioned in those pages shown on the net, so I will keep my mouth shut about that other than to say it involved no "dirt"...as roughly ten percent of Tull's fandom seem to relish and wallow in, so much as an even handed account of the development of relationships between very close teenage friends, as to some extent I know you remain in communication with all those guys. Now knowing me, I probably have the wrong person altogether, lol, but there are elements to what you wrote on the 2nd where it pretty much has to be you. .

Whew! thanks, MD. I think you're in merry old England........somewhere.....could be Newcastle? Leeds? or Birmingham? ...were you laid in England's grren and pleasant land. I, on the other hand, grew up with schools and factories and was too indiscriminate staion-bred...here in the Bronx, NYC. And if I had your address, I'd send u a plane tic for Oct 10th(?) to sit beside me at me 11th row, dead center, seat at the Beacon Theatre. Cant wait! that Ryan guy better sing ALOT (if u get my drift.....trying to be good here) or next to me at my 4th row seat at Westbury. Peace & love.

do, without referencing websters, tell us precisely the meaning of that word Tommieboy, and what the "precise nature" of your use of same was. Since I know you are lurking around here a response time of in excess of 5 minutes will show to me clearly you do not know yourself.

No, I'm not one of the landed gentry in fact quite the opposite. Grew up in south London and began work at 18 years of age. A Jethro Tull fan since 1968 when I was but a sprightly 20 year old - at least I can get my maths right. Many years later and at the age of 65 have just retired from full time work and all the hassle that goes with it including a stroke 7 years ago which has robbed me, partially at least, of my balance. It also f****d up my eyesight which meant that the doctor's and the authorities took away my driving licence. In a nutshell that me tommie, now how about you ?

Hi Emsliegirl
I too have read and enjoyed a snippet of your story - I think you paint a great picture of those times in Blackpool, the crowds, the Amusements, the back streets and the early days of the band.

love the change of photo. John Evan just as I remember and Ian also just as I remember, so nice. Jeff just a little bit distanced in keeping with who he was. Thank you so very much for the comments will read again.

Thank you so very much for the comments will read again. If you haven't already done so, have a look at the photos taken by Graham Page at the Toby Jug in south west London back in January 1969, just a few weeks after Martin Barre joined the band. They are in the memorabelia thread at: jethrotull.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=collectors&action=display&thread=1845

They are brilliant photos from Graham Page. I recognise Ian's clothes (had so few) especially his dad's old, long brown coat. Very evocative photos, takes me right back. Hard days but unforgetable. Thanks for the link.

Update on yesterdays Bonhams Entertainment and Memorabilia auction yesterday the 3rd of July 2013.
The two Anderson letters sold collectively for 5 GBP under the top estimated asking price. Minus commission it is to the penny what is required.
So in memory of a young Ian Anderson's promise to himself, quote 'If I ever make it' , the money raised will go towards keeping a similarly gifted young man at the right school for at least another term.
Was amused to see that a lock of Mick Jaggers hair intertwined with Criss Shrimptons fetched 3,200 GBP. Interesting to see if I/A and my own intertwined locks from the silly sixties would fetch anything at all.
I could throw in a small piece of of his blue cotton pillow case sent in a letter dated dated 19th of January 1968. Obviously there are people out there who want to know. Next auction December 18th 2013. Will keep you posted.
