In October Ryan will no longer be Understudy Ray/Dave but alternate Ray personally I think he pulls off Ray's look way better than when he's wearing a Dave-wig

Ryan O’Donnell in Sunny Afternoon Photo: Kevin Cummins TEAM B LINKGuest writer: @helzbels ...Team B Roulette is my personal term for the occasions on which the Sunny Afternoon stage is graced by a seemingly random selection of the show’s enormously talented and versatile understudies. Very occasionally, a freak combination of cast holidays and illness can mean that the understudies get to perform in roles which they haven’t played for quite some time. One such occasion was in mid-December last year, when Ryan O’Donnell (Alternate Ray Davies/Understudy Dave Davies) was called upon to play the part of Dave at short notice.
Ryan hadn’t had the chance to play Dave since the summer and, more importantly, we Afternooners hadn’t seen his Dave for months! Ryan’s Dave is definitely an angry teenager, without being childish – he’s focused on his music. The week beginning 14 December 2015 saw Ryan playing Dave on the Monday, Oliver Hoare playing Dave on the Tuesday and Robbie White playing Dave on the Wednesday with Ryan playing his big brother, Ray. As I like to say, you can never have too many Daves!
That week was definitely one of my favourites at Sunny Afternoon, with Ryan playing Dave and Ray on consecutive days, giving outstanding performances in both roles. I’d been intrigued to see what Ryan would be like as a performer since his name first appeared in the show’s programme last spring as understudy for both Ray and Dave. Lillie Flynn (Rasa in the original cast) had informed us that Ryan was “amazing” – both she and George Maguire (Dave in the original cast) had appeared in a touring production of Quadrophenia with Ryan in 2009. Ryan also has a rather eclectic CV, having been both a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company and part of the band Jethro Tull, touring with the latter for four years. I can’t think of any other actors who’ve combined both Shakespeare and prog rock, unless I might’ve missed Peter O’Toole going on tour with Blodwyn Pig.
Ryan grew on me very quickly, not least because of his incredible singing voice – I’d happily listen to him sing Set Me Free, I’m Not Like Everybody Else and Sitting In My Hotel (which isn’t even one of my favourite Kinks songs) all day. His Ray is quite serious and driven yet Ryan still manages to bring a light touch to the frequent comedic moments in the production. I’m delighted that Ryan is now Alternate Ray, rather than ‘just’ understudy, as it means he gets to perform the part regularly and he’s had the chance to develop the role – plus I get to see him more often. As we’re in Team B appreciation week I can make it public that my personal ambition, as far as Team B are concerned, is to see Ryan play both Ray and Dave simultaneously – with Robbie White as Rasa. You can easily manage that, lads, multi-talented supermen that you are – go, Team B!

Featuring some of The Kinks' best-loved songs, including You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset and Lola, SUNNY AFTERNOON tells the story of the early life of Ray Davies and the rise to stardom of The Kinks. The Kinks exploded onto the 60s music scene with a raw energetic new sound that rocked a nation. But how did that happen, where exactly did they come from and what happened next? Set against the back-drop of a Britain caught mid-swing between the conservative 50s and riotous 60s, this production explores the euphoric highs and agonising lows of one of Britain's most iconic bands and the irresistible music that influenced generations. Ryan O'Donnell (Ray Davies) most recently appeared in "Sunny Afternoon" at the Harold Pinter Theatre. His other theatre credits include: "Quadrophenia" at Theatre Royal Plymouth; "Frankenstein" at Royal and Derngate; "Romeo & Juliet" for the Royal Shakespeare Company; "ShadowMouth" at Sheffield Crucible and "Tracy Beaker the Musical" at the Nottingham Playhouse. Ryan was a member of the band Jethro Tull for four years. In 2009 he recorded 'Matthew and Son' with Cat 'Yusuf' Stevens and the BBC. Garmon Rhys (Pete Quaife) most recently appeared in "Doctor Faustus" at Trafalgar Studios. His other theatre credits include: "The Secret Adversary" at the Watermill Theatre & UK tour and "Regeneration" at the Royal and Derngate and UK tour. Andrew Gallo (Mick Avory) most recently appeared in "Parade" at the Hope Mill Theatre. His other theatre credits include: "Adam Long's Dickens Abridged" on UK tour; "Sister Act" at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre; "Saturday Night Fever" at the Theatre Royal Bath and UK tour; "New York City Rhythm" at The Playhouse Theatre and "Hairspray" at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre. Following a sell-out run at Hampstead Theatre, SUNNY AFTERNOON opened to critical acclaim at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London's West End in October 2014 and will have its final performance at the Harold Pinter Theatre on 29 October 2016. SUNNY AFTERNOON has music and lyrics by Ray Davies with a book by Joe Penhall and original story by Ray Davies. It is directed by Edward Hall, designed by Miriam Buether with choreography by Adam Cooper. Lighting design is by Rick Fisher with sound design by Matt McKenzie for Autograph. Musical and vocal adaptations are by Ray Davies and Elliott Ware based on original Kinks recordings. The Musical Director is Barney Ashworth and the Musical Supervisor is Elliott Ware.

Ryan O'Donnell: From Jethro Tull to Ray Davies in hit musical Sunny Afternoon18 August 2016 Direct link to articlePUT yourself in Ryan O'Donnell's shoes for a moment. You've been chosen to play Ray Davies, one of the most influential songwriters and musicians of his generation in a musical based on the rise of his band the Kinks. You are going through rehearsals – and the great man is sat in front of you. "Ray was in watching one of our last rehearsals," said Ryan, who brings Sunny Afternoon to Manchester this week following massive success in London's West End. "I had to deliver lines and songs probably about five feet away from him. It's not necessarily intimidating but I was like 'am I even getting close to the mark of how this felt at the time?' "The thing is, you never really know what he's thinking as he doesn't like to give away too much. "Ray was very hands on when the show was being created but now it's in its first skin, if you like, he tries to let it breathe. He did come back with some fairly good feedback the other day and said we were doing the songs justice and Ryan was leading it pretty well, so I'll take that." Those expecting Sunny Afternoon to be the latest in a string of juke box musicals can think again. The show is packed with great Kinks songs but also captures the spirit of four lads from Muswell Hill who changed the face of pop music and the internal struggles that increasing fame brought. "It's an excellent story and it's not just tune after tune - some of the scenes are really meaty," said Ryan, who has been playing Ray in the West End version several nights a week. "I've been doing this show for 18 months and each time I do it, it still feels fresh," he said. "You find new stuff in the music and the text every day." Ryan, who has previously starred in a theatre tour of Quadrophenia, said: "This play is probably the biggest challenge of my life. "When I played Jimmy in Quadrophenia that was probably the dream role I could have hoped for as a kid as I was a massive fan of The Who and an even bigger fan of the Quadrophenia album. But it was nowhere near as challenging as playing Ray Davies in this show. "It's so dynamic and detailed and you don't get a chance to breathe. Ray's on stage the full time besides the drum solo so it really take a lot of concentration to balance everything out. "After doing this big screamy, heavy number, the next moment is a tender scene with his wife. It's great I love it." One thing Ryan is determined not to do is an impression of Ray Davies. "I feel as though I would be selling the audience short by giving them an impression rather than a performance," he said. "I try to think inside's Ray's head rather than think how would I do this. But I'm not doing an impression but trying to get inside his skin a bit more." As well as performing with the show in the West End, Ryan has also spent the last four years as a member of rock group Jethro Tull working with another legendary front man Ian Anderson. "Ian has been really supportive of my career and he always said 'if anything comes along that might benefit your career then take it as long as you can give me a couple of month's notice', which I did with this." Rock star, theatre performer, Ryan is happy that's it's difficult to pin one label on him. "I just want to keep on working and each time I do a job I like it to be a challenge and to be different," he said. "Now I can't wait to bring Sunny Afternoon to Manchester." Sunny Afternoon, Manchester Opera House, Friday, August 19 to Saturday, August 27. Details from 0844 871 3018.

www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/theatre-news/review-sunny-afternoon-kinks-manchester-11792118Review: Sunny Afternoon at Manchester Opera House11:20, 24 AUG 2016 BY DANIELLEROPER Ryan O'Donnell, left, as Ray Davies and Mark Newnham, right, as Dave Davies in Sunny Afternoon at the Opera House."F**k this!" shouts Dave Davies, aka Mark Newnham, expressing the very zeitgeist that propelled the meteoric rise to fame of the working class boys from Muswell Hill. Breaking off, both mentally and physically (check out Dave's nightie-clad chandelier swinging) from the schmaltz of the 50s and casting their wrecking ball headlong into the 60s, the Kinks are back in the Olivier Award-winning Sunny Afternoon, the musical created by frontman Ray Davies and performed brilliantly by the cast. That riff - the intro to You Really Got Me Going - is like the rocket transporting you into the headspace of Ray, Dave, Mick and Pete more than 50 years ago as they set out on their stellar career - and what a sound explosion it is! Dave 'The Rave', played by Newnham, is undoubtedly the star of the show, prompting laughs even with his entrances with his hilariously rebellious posturing more than a little reminiscent of actress Kathy Burke's! He is the glue that holds the show together. The cast of Sunny Afternoon at the Opera House.Ryan O' Donnell, formerly of rock band Jethro Tull, is good as Ray Davies but his vocals and attitude lack a little of the cynicism that distinguished the laid-back frontman. The beauty of the show though, is that rare mix of a great concert and a narrative that really draws you in. As well as moments that make you want to sing your heart out and dance your socks off, there are some achingly tender touches, one being when the boys are signing their first contract with their unscrupulous management and Ray, silently pleading with his beleaguered and financially struggling dad to sign on the dotted line, releases that haunting acapella line of Dead End Street: "What are we living for?" Lisa Wright, as Ray's wife Rasa, also puts in a very believable performance as a woman in love trying to work out her temperamental husband, her vocals bringing to mind feelings every woman can identify with. Ryan O'Donnell, left, as Ray Davies and Lisa Wright, right, as his wife, Rasa in Sunny Afternoon at the Opera House.Garmon Rhys and Andrew Gallo as the band's rhythm section, Pete Quaife and Mick Avory, are great too, Gallo treating us to a fabulous drum solo, as if taking out all Mick's frustration at the band's often highly entertaining in-fighting. The end of the show is when the audience start dancing to the infectious Lola and All Day And All Of The Night, irresistible to anyone with a soul. And then he appears - the man himself - Ray Davies, standing right next to the man playing him. Shame he couldn't have given us just one verse of the lusciously laconic and seriously sardonic Sunny Afternoon.

See if you can get to the young man and talk some sense into him....The acting gigs might be good for his career, in a short term way...but the Tull work will help him in the afterlife...and beyond. Yes but......Ryan's role when playing Ray in Sunny Afternoon is a much bigger gig than anything he did with Ian, in my opinion.........being Ray is a vital part second maybe to Dave.......but with the Ian Anderson stuff, he is not given any status, a prop for Ian at times, and Ryan is capable of much more, as in Sunny Afternoon, and previously Quadraphenia.....

I'm sure you are right and I am being selfish to wish he could come back and walk around the stage and throw in a phrase or verse here and there that Ian can't reach anymore. The waltz measures at the end of TAAB...with Ian and Ryan dancing with each other....remain sharp and happy memories.
