One of Tull's supreme masterpieces in my view. Yes, the drum machine sucks, but the material is fantastic. There are so many musical ideas in the album it boggles the mind. I can't wait for a new remaster package.

I can't wait for a new remaster package. Agree i think its a great album, the tour was superb ,one of Tulls best imo. I remember when it came out...couldn’t put it down. At the time (and now) thought it was one of their very best and was so upset by the constant criticism that it really hardened me to the press. After A Passion Play I didn't believe it could get any worse, well it was just about as bad. Right then and there was when fake news became a reality for me. Then came the Grammy and now the snubbing in the hall of fame. On and on. Now that Ian is almost 75 it seems the press is starting to take a liking to Ian and they are finally recognizing their errors in judgement.

Under Wraps .The only time I ever saw a Tull live show promoting an album that wasn't out yet. The UK tour started a few days before the album release so I had no time to familiarise myself with the new songs. The live show was tremendous, clever, powerful and thundering, the new songs sounded great. Ian still in great voice in the early days of that tour, the band really cooking, Id say the band at their peak really. Some people around me at the gig were not too happy with the image, few signs of long hair and folk rock, but I loved it, another twist in the Tull tale. So with that in mind, I have to say the album a few days later was a disappointment. It sounded sterile and the overloud drums gave it a metronomic "clockwork" feel. (On the 2005 remaster for some reason the drums are even louder!) Over the years I have come to appreciate the quality of the songs and how clever an album it is. I too would love a remix, and if adding a real drummer would somehow alter the feel of the album, then at least turn down the drums to lose that thudding beat which nearly spoils the listening experience. Halfway through the album I find myself just listening to that throbbing drum.

The 'Under Wraps' tour was a peak...an 'Apogee' in fact, for voice, strength, tightness and thundering Tull. It didn't match the popularity peak, but we Tull fans know they were cooking on high that year. Great album, too.

Under Wraps #2 is a beautiful song. The 'opening' sound is fantastic. I always wondered why this was never released as a single at the time.
The best track on the album in my humble opinion.

Under Wraps #2 is a beautiful song. The 'opening' sound is fantastic. I always wondered why this was never released as a single at the time. The best track on the album in my humble opinion. I agree. It's my favorite on the album, too. My guess would be that the record execs wanted any single to mirror the pop sound of the time and usher in a newer Tull sound, especially with the advent of MTV and Saturday morning rock video shows. At that time, there weren't many more folky type songs being released. In the 80's Tull really struggled to keep their music on the radio. In the 70's, radio played ALL KINDS of obscure Tull songs. That's how I originally heard several songs from LITP, when WMMR played a mini-concert and included Driving Song and Song for Jeffrey in the mix. But, once the 80's took hold, you started to only hear that "classic" sound. Radio stopped playing any deep tracks. You heard "'lung, Thick, Skating, Living, and Loco" and that was about it. THEN, one day, FM radio decided to actually play a new song about the plight of the poor American farmer.....that poor purveyor of agri-chemicals. And then, within six months after the grammy, FM radio forgot all about JT again. Sigh. One can only hope for their own Sirius channel!! "This is Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. You're listening to the Jethro Tull channel on Sirius XM....and this is Kissing WILLIE!

I have been giving 'Under Wraps' a spin this afternoon. Out of all the 'deluxe' editions I think this will be the most interesting if the remix includes 'real' drums. I wonder just have far into the Tull discography these deluxe editions will go? I am lucky enough to have them all, but if they ended with 'Under Wraps' I would not be disappointed. They have all been superb so far. It would be better for my bank-balance as well!

A guy on Youtube, Aleš Pickar, ranked every Tull / Anderson album (senza the new one) from worst to best. I sat through it. Well, guess what his #1 BEST release was........Under Wraps (I write that with the sound of Ian groaning very loudly like in the first couple sentences of Overseer Overture. #1! Under Wraps almost lined the bottom of my bird cage in high school.

Halfway through the album I find myself just listening to that throbbing drum. I'm not being mean, it's just that a majority of the audience during this show in October 1984 in Philadelphia were lulled into boredom. When the band was hitting the stage with a very cool opening (the band was wrapped up in white paper and suddenly sprung out and began playing their instruments), the fans were doing wild. But, then the song Under Wraps and Lap of Luxury began the slow decline of the setlist. I watched as people became disinterested. Ian was standing at the keyboard for a few songs and people just didn't seem to want to see / hear that. The setlist was mediocre. Imagine, you're a Tull fanatic (as we all are), you've loved the band more than any other band and put countless paychecks towards their merchandise. I tried looking up the substandard setlist, but the internet has the setlist incorrect, because they opened with Under Wraps, not Loco. Loco was an encore. Many of us took the subway home that night, had to get up for high school the next day and the word was that the band was a dud. I was very disappointed. In my mind, the greatest live band, didn't show up that night. Thankfully, the Knave tour and the 20th anniversary ( the great Tower Theater) tour was right around the corner, a few years away, and they redeemed themselves, in a very big way. Under Wraps tour, great? Not in Philly. Maybe it was an off night.

The next in line for a 'deluxe edition'. I think this one could be the most interesting yet. Is it possible we could see this in 2024 or 2025?

I think Under Wraps is a masterpiece. Ian's ultimate electronic album. Yes,, you have to get past the electronic drums, in some track more than others, but the musical ideas and riches that come at you in rapid succession are mind boggling. I think if they remaster it quieting the main beat it will be reassessed as the great musical statement that it is.
For some reason the remastered album emphasizes the drum more than the original release! Just tone down that prominent upbeat drum and we'll have a winner. It can be done with new techniques now. I think Ian said the record company thought it would be too costly to use a real drum. But we'll see.

This was a good album, why so few comments? The songs took a new direction for Tull, people obsess over the synth drums and miss the music. Exactly my friend. Perfectly said.
