Anyone know why Ian doesn't drive?

Good question...I mean...i hate cars myself but am of the age when a driver's license was a cornerstone of freedom and official adulthood...the handful of people I know who don't drive sort of put it off, put it off till it made them unique or even a bit eccentric...both Ian-esque traits...add to that the fact that he was in a world of taxis and limos and other paid-for drivers fairly young and it stuck...perhaps a time for him to think or relax and leave the driving to someone else...eventually and from then on consistently, to his wife. All guesses...I doubt he was afraid to drive...but who knows...maybe our next Q and A ?

Why do I not drive? I have no idea - I used to say it was because I didn't need to as I lived close to everything subways etc and despite all the bad stuff I actually enjoy public transport. Given the choice of car or train on the scenic routes ie Highland West coast or Paddington to Penzance it would be trains trains all the way. However I love my freedom and dreamt about driving an open top car, sunny morning (after the rush hour) down the A30. I haven't a clue!!

Anyone know why Ian doesn't drive? He's always descibed himself as a " professional passenger"

Here I am at the end of the day with a cup of cold coffee from the station buffet. On Trains, on Trains I seem to spend my life on Trains.
Thought young Ian rode motorbikes. Plenty of pics of him on bikes dotted around

Plenty of pics of him on bikes dotted around I've seen pics of him on a quad bike or a motorbike too around his grounds. There's driving for pleasure and driving for necessity I suppose. How many people actually hate driving? He does like trains though according to the lyrics. Do you think Shona said from the start "You make the music and I'll do the driving?" I'm sharing random thoughts here

It is possible Shona doesn't let him drive. ! I can say on my third trip up there, the one in 85 during such a wet summer when the farm manager Ian MacKinnon allowed me to stay in this shed across the road from Kilmarie in which dozens if not hundreds of maybe 200 pound sacks of salmon pellets, and what appeared to be Ian's Stormwatch binoculars were kept, that morning when I came stumbling out in a fog it was Ian behind the wheel of a range rover with his son. Not wanting to try my luck any further in his personal life, (and also not wanting go have to incur his wrath if he had seen me coming out of the barn and had not talked to his manager, for all I know he would not have cared at all but if he did...)I just kept on walking. That particular route, assuming he was coming from his house, would have been all off road. Really I don't know that I had anything new to ask him, having found him a touch reticent when broaching the holy ground of Tull in the prior conversation, other than if his tour manager Gert had given him the lovely ink drawings my Caroline made of Kilmarie from pics I took on earlier visits. Or maybe Hello Ian, hows tricks? He loves stuff like that from scraggly strangers, particularly Americans. I do know if there is ever another Q and A with him I am highly curious to know what method he used to quit smoking, my money says sheer willpower, but I would like to know. Guessing this was like 91.

I bet it was willpower and brain power...I mean...why would you want to risk longitivity if you're having an Ian Anderson quality kind of life on this planet....he probably took a long look at his wife and kids and farms and wallet and everything else and had an ah-ha moment after which health became important.....In this manner he was the follower, not the leader...Martin got the health bug and acted on it a good two or three years before Ian and there is no way it didn't influence and inspire him when his slef motivated wake up came......I'm next...I swear....

Guessing this was like 91. I have a hunch it was probably sheer willpower. I know plenty of people who said simply "Thats it" and stuck with it. Although a vast proportion of them (me included) switched onto another addiction ie food or specifically carbs/fat n sugar. Scientists have come up with the theory that the compulsion-causing part of our brains react in the same way to Big Macs as they do to heroin www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/7533668/Junk-food-as-addictive-as-heroin-and-smoking.htmlRay re your visit to Skye. I've probably mentioned it before but always remember the documentary on STV or maybe nationally, I know that it was also on the news too when Ian said that any of his fans could come up to Strathaird. It was unique and it's great to meet someone who came all that way over. I love that image of you in the barn surrounded by salmon pellets and the Stormwatch binoculars sitting on some dusty window sill.

Apparently Albert Einstein never drove, prefering to walk or ride a bicycle, and neither does Barry Manilow thereby finally nailing the link between Barry and Ian. Over to you Bernie

My experience is, anybody who can ride an offroad motorcycle w skill, that skill is translated to the steering wheel as far better than average driving skills. Maybe its that a closed car doesnt allow for the wind as a vital force in the experience. Niether does a car take the amount of concentration and attention that a motorcycle does, could factor in.

There were a bunch of Ian as Evel Knevil pix taken around TOTRARTYTD...and a picture that got in people magazine with Ian flying along on a dirt bike, hat just blown off, big smile on his face....oh yeah, Princess Patti, an Enduro is a dirt bike...not a lawn mower nor trusty vibrator...well, they are trusty and do vibrate.

These ones Bernie? No doubt taken when the Andersons lived at Pophleys as there is a large wood behind the house where he also used to take his friends etc., grouse shooting.

I've never had the pleasure of riding a motor bike as I went down the car route straight away, starting with a split screen morris minor SLK 114. You always remember the licence plate of your first car. It had no heating, broke down regularly and had a top speed of about 40 mph downhill with a following wind. www.simoncars.co.uk/morris/minormm.htmlI did fall off the back of a scooter once scouring a deep furrows across a cricket pitch as me, the other rider and the scooter went in opposite directions. I still shudder at the thought

My term as leader of the feared motorcycle gang, Kikes on Bikes* ( 'born to raise rates'*) ended in 1983 with a wreck that shattered my right arm, which is still scarred and cannot pronate nor suppanate*....only bicycles for me since in the two wheeled department.
* Funny if you know about local lesbian biker gang: Dykes on Bikes * Funny if you know the Hell's Angel motto, 'Born to raise hell' * funny medical talk if you figure out I...uh...'roll my own' left handed ever since...
