I was thinking, who will be the first to yell Aqualung! Oh, no.
See! The TAAB concert throw its bolts upon you and the hour of judgement draweth near. Would you be the fool stood there yelling AQUALUNG, or the wiser man who rushes clear.

Yeah...everyone stifle yerselves and the person next to you, as needed....God Knows Tull tours have deteriorated east to west as ian chickens out of new material and replaces it with greatest hits....Under Wraps/ WITL era was tragic....7 or 8 new songs early in the tour...3 by the time it got to california. ( Title cut, Later that same Evening and Fly by Nite ...earlier that tour included: European Legacy, Nobody's car, Apogee, Made in England)

Pretty much the fate of West Coast fans with the still memorable exception of 1988 when the 20 year tour started in the Bay Area and we were treated to very, very, very strong performances including first EVER Mother Goose and Cheap Day return and Part of the Machine and strong and well rested Allcock/Pegg contributions despite the fact that they played an hour w/Fairport before Tull came onstage....Two concerts on consecutive nights, the Shoreline in Mountain View and Concord pavillion in Concord...so amazing that three friends and I found a way to scram down to Southern california and see them two more nights, one in Irvine and one in San Diego...all 4 gigs were outdoors and drew audiences of between 6 and 10 thousand enthusiastic fans.

Saw first show at Perth. Really funny in parts, band played well but there a few glitches, cue and timing wise. Firs night I guess; sell out. TAAB 1 kicked show off, ryan o d doing lines which IA can no longer reach. Whole show v theatrical, akin tull shows of early 70s. IA in hilarious videos! Brilliant. Audience loved it and were v disappointed at no encore. Bumped into florian outside before shown, he was smoking a tab nervously! First night nerves I guess. The show was very good tonight but after a few more dates it'll be excellent!

I've never been to a Ian Anderson/Tull concert that never had an encore, that's going to be a bit strange but I'm looking forward even more to seeing it for myself. Cheers! If only I had an increase in my moderators pay I could maybe have joined you in Perth.

Can't wait until Reading although all being well I've got Martin Barre at Tavistock before that. Btw John, mods pay is frozen again this year although I have applied to Sue, Grabbit & Run Loan Sharks Inc. for funds.

sorry for the brevity of the review but i did it on my blackberry. i'm sure more in depth and considered pieces will follow but mine was an almost instantaneous reaction. the band were very tight and the videos synced up very well. IA could have been (is) an accomplished comic actor. the sight of him in a wig playing a shrink and then col parritt (not sure if its col or some other rank) falls so much in line with the self parody and the idea of sending oneself up, he has had over the years. Mixed with this there are moments of real pathos, reflection and nostalgia, which complement the music so well. with this show you are getting so much more than the music, its a multimedia experience which the old boy has excelled himself in. the band too play their parts in this well choreographed epic , its almost slapstick in parts. it felt like the spirit of hammond and evan had been saluted and been brought into the present! the fun and humour of what many of us remember is back. bravo IA!!!!

Actually, I'm pretty sure the UW tour is when his voice started to go, or rather he injured it. I was at the Minneapolis/St. Paul show and I spoke with him before-hand - It was easy to tell his voice was different and more so during the show - there were literally just a couple of songs from UW. While in Chicago the night before they (he tried to sing) played nearly the whole album, but a friend of mine at the show said his voice was really off - it sounded strained.
When we were talking, he was kind of 'bummed out' - not himself - either cordial or intense. If my memory serves me correctly - I believe they hit the west coast after that.

Review from the Scotsman. Pal of mine went along to the show. He reckoned it was good but was very disjointed in the second half and did not make any sense to anyone he talked to. He enjoyed IA's banter at concerts in the past but he said there was none of that other than a joke about prostate cancer that fell flat. He said folk leaving the show were very disappointed that there was no Aqualung, Locomotive, etc. He said others did not appreciate the spoken parts too. www.scotsman.com/lifestyle/music/news-and-features/gig-review-ian-anderson-perth-concert-hall-1-2236234

Any suggestions for something different? How about Steelmonkey, SFTW, Wind Up, Crosseyed Mary for starters.

I imagine it does a bit too live. I cannot sympathise with anyone who wants Loco or A at a TAAB concert in 2012 ;D ok maybe an encore - they might reconsider this as concerts go on?

Strange you should mention the encore. I am back in Newcastle on leave and was in the town this morning for an eye check. I came out of the opticians and saw David Goodier and John O'Hara outside one of the theatres (my eyes cannot have been that bad). I talked briefly to David Goodier and said I really like the new album. He asked if what I thought about the whole concept and if I had seen any of the shows yet. I have not seen either concert but mentioned my mates comment about not playing any "hits'. David said they had tried to promote it as a TAAB/TAAB2 so people should not be too surprised. I think all us Tull fans understand this but then maybe not all folk bother to look into the concert details. DG seemed a nice chap though and he seemed genuinely keen to get feedback on the album and concerts.

Glasgow last night was excellent, unlike any Tull / IA gig I've been to. Hairs on the back of the neck many times, particularly during the first half.
As reported elsewhere it was TAAB / interval / TAAB2. No encore. That might be a shock to the system but after both Bricks anything else would be out of place.
Ryan's singing and acting really lifts both halves of the show, but highlight the limitations of IA's voice. The odd note dropped here and there and some of the mixing still needing tweaked. Scott Hammond done one hell of a job taking Barrie's original fills and solos and damn nigh equalling them.
A few spoilers! > > > > > > > > The men in brown coats and flat caps make a return - some look very familiar. > > The video intro is a brief shrink session with Max Quad. > > Only one phone call interruption, from a former guest artist. This leads to a 'live' Skype call on the BIG video screen. > > The 'Mike Nelson' scuba diver character makes a few cameos on the video, and is revealed at the end to be...oh I'll let you find out.

Just back from the Newcastle show too. I thought it was great. Good points from the show: - Band musical reproduction of TAAB1 & 2. I would think it was as good as it gets. Excellent stuff. - TAAB2 in the second part of the show. Thought the album sounded great live, Ian's voice was good and he seemed able to cope well with the new songs. - Ryan O'Donnell. He has a good voice and stage presence.
Bad points: - IA's voice during TAAB1. Sorry but it sounded to me like he just struggles to sing the old stuff. The fact that Ryan O'D sings so well seems to highlight IA's problems even more. - The City Hall seemed to be a little over 50-60% full. A shame for a good show.
Overall I really enjoyed the show (as did the 3 others that were with me). I would rate it better than the previous few Tull concerts that I have been to and IA and crew seemed to enjoy themselves too.

While I wait for my video of 'Banker Bets, Banker wins' to upload AGAIN! I'll just reflect on a great concert last night. To give a full account of the show would spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it yet so I'll keep it simple. Thick as a Brick was everything I hoped for with Ryan o' Donnell providing added vocals which I thought worked very well. John o' Hara on hammond organ was as good as it gets. Scott Hammond played with terrific concentration. Florian Opahle played well though I thought his guitar could have been a bit louder. David Goodier stayed at the back of the stage adding the odd vocal and played Glockenspiel as well as bass guitar. Ian Anderson was everything you expect from him, a great entertainer. TAAB2 after the break was just brilliant, I won't say any more. Overall a great night. I enjoyed what I would call Thick as a Brick the musical.
