I love dot com. And i saw that tour. It was great. I like all the songs and the way it sounds. My only sadness is it's the last Tull album. That's the great thing about loving an artist and band who have 21+ albums of divers songs, plus solo material. There's something in it for everybody. One person's coffee is another's cup of tea. One person's Bungle, Cry You a Song, Witch's Promise is another person's Monserrat, Pussy Willow or Lap of Luxury. Many people did not like Dot Com or even gave it a chance, while other's find the last three albums to be a wonderful listening experience. About ten year's ago, I ran into a guy in line at a bookstore who was wearing a Tull t-shirt. I asked him his favorite Tull song. His response: Kissing Willie. So, there you have it. The guy's FAVORITE Tull song is Kissing Willie. And yes, up until recently, we were thinking Dot Com was the end of the line. Now, we have something new and forthcoming to celebrate. I, for one, will be having a listening party to several unwitting and unsuspecting guests

Just listened to Dot Com again. I circulate all the Tull albums. What a great disc. Heavy, light, serious, humorous. It has everything. In nice DDD sound too. Does anyone know what the symbols are on each side of the cover? Do they say something? I think the symbols on the album cover of Dot Com contain the Name, Address, Phone Number and Social Security Number of Chris Welch.

Something wrong there. I never said "I like them all also" ( as supposedly "quoted" a few posts ago) because I dont! Anyway , to keep on topic , I like most of Dot Com. I love the accordion on "Gift of Roses" as its used in much the same way as on "Skating Away" to add b ackground textures rather than wheezing away as a lead instrument as it does on "Brick 2" and ""Erraticus". So "Roses", "Willow", "Spiral","windows" get a thumbs up from me. Most of the rest is ok, but "Mangos" are both dreadful. I also think its perhaps the worst album cover ever too, not a particularly good work of art and nothing to do with any of the music within.

The way they manage to get the sounds of a bunch of boats rocking in the wind at the dock on Bends Like a Willow is amazing. The ropes knocking the poles percussion and creaking hulls guitar....Pure Tull Genius. Totally agree with your thought. It adds "something" ethereal to the song. To this day, my wife is still fascinated by the sound of Ian pouring a cup of tea. We listen to it very loud to get all the nuances of what goes into a perfect tasting cup. And I tell her that when I first began hearing the song in 1977 (age 11), at first listen I thought he was putting on a pair of ice skates and the blades were clanking against the ice. Then, one day my brother set me straight, "He's making tea, you dummy!". That memory is so fresh in my mind, 45 years later. It's too damn real and in the present tense. Oh well, after all my pants were undone. Pure genius!

Come on, smile a little. It's a great album. And I love the humor of the Mangos. Hunt by Numbers, El Nino, Black Mamba, Far Alaska, Dot Con, Dog-Eared Years are great songs. Great album in my book.

You're right. Dot Com may be considered so-so to many Tull listeners, but it would be most other bands' best album. Ian does circles around what other bands spend years trying to create. Dot Com has no weak spots, whatsoever.

We all have our opinions. i wasn't criticizing you. I happen to be a huge Tull fan and I really do like everything. I'm probably rare in that fact. I can't say that about any other band. Enjoy!!!!!!!

I see your point. With all other bands, I think "Tull fanatics" are able to see the good and the bad (for instance, I do not like Their Satanic Majesties Request). However, a Tull album is better than no Tull album (just like a bad day at golf is better than a good day at work). Hence, all Tull and Ian solo albums are great.

I agree , and I mean no disrespect to anyone's opinion either. Since I first discovered Tull in 72, they have had no equal in my eyes, every album has been good value and even "lesser" Tull output is superior to most other bands. Having said that though, given that most of us on here are preaching to the converted , its still interesting to discuss the merits or otherwise of Tull albums, concerts etc, when measured against other eras. All opinions are valid ,and it doesn't make anyone less of a fan because they might not like this or that. There we are in the territory of teenage "fanzines" where any criticism is seen as somehow disloyal and we have to love it all.

You just made an EXCELLENT point. I can say that the Under Wraps tour was a big disappointment to me and no one will think any less of me. And I appreciate that so much, because I just may have PTSD from that tour. I need comfort and support to get through the memories of watching a few people falling asleep during the performances of the new songs. I won't mention any names, but, there is a certain musician, should I say in New Jersey for instance, where if you say ANYTHING critical or indifferent or even ambivalent towards the artist, the fans swarm on you like hornets racing out of a hive.

Would it be wrong to say that I love "The Zealot Gene"?
By the way, can someone point me to where there might be a thread asking us to rank the albums?

Yet, for me the Under Wraps tour was one of the best ever . Ian in great voice (UK part of the tour anyway), clever stage show, powerful ,tight new songs (with real drums!!), a wonderful memory. Some of those around me at those gigs didn't like it though, it did not look or sound like "traditional" Tull and was a bit of a shock I think . Had it followed the "A" tour it wouldn't have surprised people so much, but those who didn't like the futuristic appearance of "A" breathed a sigh of relief when normal service was resumed with the "Broadsword" tour and its return to medieval outfits and folk rock themes. "Under Wraps" was for some I think, "Oh no here we go again!"

Philadelphia was very early in the tour. I didn't think the show was as powerful, expressive, and inspired as in tours past. It was a clever stage show with a very fun opening (being wrapped up). "Here we go again" was in my mind. But, I remained positive. I understand bands need to grow musically, and an artist can't become a caricature of himself, though. Your thoughts are so spot-on.

I think I’m the only one who doesn’t love Gift of Roses. Sounds a bit pop to me. Reminds me of Alanis Morrisette lol. Bends like a willow Hunt by numbers are decent fillers but not among the top 6 songs from the session imo

Bends like a willow Hunt by numbers are decent fillers but not among the top 6 songs from the session imo I always thought Gift of Roses was just about the best track on that album ! The accordion is cleverly used, playing apparently the same riff on the chorus, and yet its deliberately slightly different each time around. Reminds me of Skating Away. As we discussed earlier, I think the accordion used like that sounds really good, its just too wheezy and "behind the beat" to be a lead instrument, which is why I don't like it on the last couple of IA albums. I have to agree it does sound a bit of a pop song, but its all the better for that, a bit of light to counteract the dark (and slightly plodding) Black Mamba and Hunt by Numbers.

I really enjoy the tracks with the organ and synth. They remind of the great Tull of 72-82. Wicked windows, trickles down, awol. Then we have the acoustic Dog ear years with its TAAB feel. The excellent title track Dotcom and the fun Far Alaska. Looking forward to hearing what ever extra tracks come from this session when we get a remix book set. I’m thinking there will be a double album worth of songs for the complete session

"Gift of Roses" seems to hit the mark for you in terms of how the instrument is incorporated into the overall sound. It's interesting how different tracks can evoke such varying reactions. And as for the album cover, it seems like it missed the mark for you as well. Everyone's got their own preferences!
