As we have a few regulars now I thought it was time to poll your favourite Tull studio album. It is of course impossible just to pick one so you can select your 5 favourite albums from the list. I've included Living In the Past, 20 years, Nightcap & the Christmas album because, although not new Tull albums as such, they all include a decent amount of original studio material not on other albums.

Tough to pick just 5. Oh yeah, if anyone picks the Christmas Album they need to be permanently banned from this board.

Hi OneWhiteDuck: I picked Benefit as my most favorite and A Passion Play second, with Stand Up, Heavy Horses and A. Although, like yourself, I like them all except for This Was. It's just too bluesy for my taste. Silken...

Benefit - Passion Play - Heavy Horses - Broadsword & the Beast - Crest of a Knave. Next week it will a different selection except for Benefit which IMO is still, after all these years, an album of wonderful songs and musical ideas.

It won't let me back in again to vote for my 2nd fav album?? Sorry Ms Rabbit, first time we've done one of these so I didn't make it clear. You can only vote one time per member but you can select 5 albums from the list at once. All is not lost though, just retract your vote and put in the 5 you want, job done! Next week it will a different selection except for Benefit which IMO is still, after all these years, an album of wonderful songs and musical ideas. Speaking of retracting your vote. You can of course change your mind and follow your whims as you see fit, in theory giving this poll a life of it's own. That kind of makes you all it's Dr Frankenstein I guess!

Thick and Crest are neurologically bilateral...I dunno what it is about catfish...plenty of good songs and a brief period when it wws newish that i thought it was great but then it faded on my list...too many songs sound generic or retread-ish. White Innocence wants to be budapest, Tall Thin wants to be fat man and the blues wanna be blues songs and the goofy songs (corners, gold boots white jacket or vice versa) got irritating...This is not love was lame live...only rocks on the road is still a pleasant surprise live, jesus and sparrow are tolerable.

Kinda with you on Catfish I must say. There was some famous journo quote from a reviewer saying it was just 'Tull mucking about' which summed it up nicely for me. Some of it is great IMO but on the whole it's just a bit too lightweight. Great tour though, I think the songs worked alot better onstage than in my living room!

Yeah i remember the catfish Tour as pretty good but by the time they got to west coast USA they had dropped many of the new songs....was it allcock's last or giddings first tour?...i think giddings but i remember liking tull with Allcock...he had a good vibe/spark that seemed to infect barre and Pegg and made pussy willow and hunting girl heavier and brighter at the same time somehow.

Yo! (I'm from the Bronx, so I say YO). I gave "Roots..." a vote and your list says 0 votes for that album. C'mon now. What good is a poll if the tally is incorrect? lol

Is there a cut off date for this? Do we vote again if it's a tie for the top? ;D No cut off date. This is an ongoing poll so any new members can contribute too. Also you can retract your vote and change your mind as many times as you like so you can indulge your whims as you see fit. Yo! (I'm from the Bronx, so I say YO). I gave "Roots..." a vote and your list says 0 votes for that album. C'mon now. What good is a poll if the tally is incorrect? lol Did you? Strange. If you voted it should be there. maybe you voted for 6 and the first five registered so Roots didn't show up. Try again.

Putting in my bid for both banishment and derision as following TAAB and SFTW my third favorite Tull record is indeed the Christmas album, in part because it just happens to do cover versions of songs which are resolutely in my 20 favorite Tull's, with its heavy emphasis on SFTW. I admit that none of the tracks are improvements on the originals, but all come very close and are fascinating takes which filled me with pride at first listen, and show the maturation of an entity that arrived fully matured! To further ostracize myself may I say that I cannot stand Rush or any heavy metal, and while I frequently have enjoyed tracks by Tull's alleged brethren of the seventies such as Genesis, Yes, ELP etc, I would also hold that they were all guilty of the excess to which Tull was much more loudly accused, almost always incorrectly. If anything I come in the Tull door via the Fairport, Steeleye Span passage although Tull was the first I was aware of nearly 40 yrs ago, and may have a different perspective of our mutual phenomenon. Me, I want to see a show open w Birthday Card At XMAS

You don't get away that easy mate, good for you for liking what you like. No banishment for you I'm afraid. Tull have provided us with such varied musical styles over they years that's it's inevitable that alot of us are going to have differing opinions as to what else constitutes good music.

Me, I want to see a show open w Birthday Card At XMAS Interesting, or should I say...odd. For the most part I like the Christmas album. But I feel it's weakened by the remakes, and maybe the fact that Ian was recording Rupi at the same time. I think Pavane is an example of one that goes off on some flamenco trail, reminiscent of A Week of Moments. Ian's vocal troubles kill the remakes. Jack Frost (being the worst) is just an abomination. Not only vocally, but musically too. Ian's struggles on most of the remakes cause me to cringe just a bit more than I care to. Then of course there's drums and percussion. I miss the spirit of Barriemore Barlow's drums as well. It's one thing to change up a song as they did with the fantastic mandolin and guitar on Weathercock, but it's another just to serve up a large bass drum sized bowl of "vanilla" on the drum parts. Barrie's drums added a flavor to Tull's music that was anything but vanilla. It's obvious that Doane and Ian discount the influence that Barrie brought to Tull's sound, which the core fan loved so much. My last criticism, albeit minor, would be Andy's use of sound-patches to replicate authentic instruments: Strings, bells, bass guitar and what not... If I had my druthers I would have left the remakes off entirely or went with the far superior original versions instead. Just my 2 cents.

Just proves that we ALL have our likes and dislikes. It would be a sad place if we all liked the same thing. There are a few Tull songs I don't get on with that others rave about with a passion but we're all allowed to have our own opinions both on this forum and in a free world and society. I like Passion Play, as a lot of others do, but I've met Tullies in the past that hate it. That's their opinion and I respect that.

I must admit that I like the Christmas Album for what it is. It is not my fave Tull album but when I'm in the mood for that type of Tull fare i just put it on and enjoy. Don't try and compare it to others - just take it as it is - a bloody good album. I agree with Maddog above^. Ding Dong Merrily on high.

IMO the Christmas Album is exactly what it says on the cover. I have pretty much no interest in it until the middle of December when out comes the mince pies & mulled wine, up go the deccies and all of a sudden it makes perfect sense. Has anyone ever made a Christmas song you can listen to in the summer?!

I'm a bit partial to Fairy Tale of NY by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl out of season, but then that's just me.
