The Dutch Jethro Tull Fan Club is run by a friend Bert Maesen and over the years he has produced a very interesting fanzine/"inky" mainly concerning bootlegs and Dutch/continental Tull concerts. I hope in the near future to feature some or all of the fanzine covers together with some other interesting articles from the magazine that he has published.

The world famous, ongoing, in your face 'not the way ian planned it'? Oh yes, the very same. It's now an email only publication (ezine?) but there were 50 + editions on paper so a review of them in some form is well overdue.

The magazine "This Is Not The Way Ian Planned It" began in early 1991 and was mainly concerned with reviewing the then known bootlegs, mostly on vinyl. As the years went on, more general articles/concert reviews were included and also the many CDr bootlegs that gradually became available. This is the editorial from the very first issue: Hello Tull Friends, Some time ago David Rees made a bootleg special in "A NEW DAY", which I liked very much, because I'm a collector of Tull bootlegs. But I saw that there were some things wrong and some things incomplete. For instance, some people thought that "A passion play, Forum 75" (live at the LA Forum, July 20 1975) was the same as "Supercharged", but they are not. Trying to find out more, I started to collect facts about bootlegs. I wrote down the facts from my own bootlegs, from A NEW DAY, from my Tull friends and from bootleg books. It was really interesting to see the result, I told some people about it and they were interested in a copy. Also some people gave me the advice to ask David Rees for an ad in A NEW DAY, and David published one. So I got some more facts. Because so many people are interested in a copy of it, I asked David again to put an ad. I hope that everybody can understand that I ask a little compensation for the copies and post & package. So here it is, hope you like it !
As you know, there are good bootlegs and bad ones. There are excellent ones and mediocre ones. But it's JETHRO TULL LIVE and that's what we want it for. But my dear Tull friends, let me tell you one thing: THIS IS NOT THE WAY TAN PLANNED IT I would like to thank for their help, information and copies: David Rees - A NEW DAY (I used much excerpts from A NEW DAY, nr. 5, that was the bootleg special. Thanks for the ad's in "our" magazine.) Peter van de Berk - Sittard - Netherlands Ian Burgess - Cardiff - Wales Charlie Pritchard - Rugby - England Egbert Hofstede - Rotterdam - Netherlands Martin Webb - London - England Andreas Becker - Berlin - Germany Michael Veith — Barsinghausen - Germany Jens Steinecke - Bad Bevensen - Germany Andre de Veer - Leeuwarden - Netherlands Rene Vermeulen - Delft - Netherlands Michael Dawson - San Mateo - U.S.A. Ralf Jewski — Gelsenkirchen — Germany Mike Shavez - Barrow in Furness - England Jerome Ryan - Willowdale — Canada Cover : Peter van de BerkThe first 12 issues Some more when my scanner cools down ;D

Ditto the kudos to angrified canine for great stuff....the 'thank you' list alone brings back fond memories of forgotten names form the past...who else knew Michael Veith? A devout, devout, meticulous Tull fan who hated his nickname: 'pipe'...but spread the word of Tull far and wide from his central German home...big hearted, knowledgeable and, lost in the mists of time. I think he may have spoken a sentence or three in the second offical video release.

There are many many fans I've met who, for one reason or another, don't seem to be around. One of the greatest fans I ever met was the late Dave Hall who was one of the friendliest people I've met on my travels - always kept "open house" whenever Tull played in Manchester. Maybe we need a Long Lost Fans thread and see if the members know of their whereabouts these days.

I hope that he is fine now and that he will follow JT on every gig in Germany - as he did for the last 20 years or so.

Not what you might think on a Tull forum, although it fits the scene quite well. Talisman (American Woman album) is for another favourite band. The Guess Who Tull Central won't be happy. watching

I received the following email this morning from Bert Maesen of the Dutch Jethro Tull fan Club THIS IS NOT THE WAY BERT PLANNED IT!! Hellooooohoooooooo. No Tull news this time, but “just to let you know that I’m still alive and well and kicking” and living in Sittard. WHY???
Well, Last Saturday I had a heart attack. Now I know what people mean, when they say “I saw the light”. The coming months will be a period of rehabilitation. It was a terrible experience, but hey, life goes on.
Hope to see you sometime, somewhere……………
All the best, BERTOn behalf of the membership of the Jethro Tull Forum I'd like to say "hope you're feeling better soon Bert"

Latest from Bert Maesen
Hello to all of you………….
As I told you on the 11th of February, I had a heart attack at the beginning of that Month. Bit by bit it’s getting better, but I think it’s not good to be a contributor for this magazine [This Is Not The Way Ian Planned It]. Why?? Because our editor Steve Parkhouse ALSO had a heart attack last week !!!!!!!!!!!
I would like to wish Steve a speedy and full recovery. And hey!!: welcome to the club…….
As you all can see, we’re both still alive and that means that God must think that we are definitily not - Too old too rock ‘n’roll But are.. Too young to die.
To all my other contributors I would just like to say: You can leave before it’s your turn…..
Bert
Get well soon Steve from all at The Forum

How the Dutch Fan Club evolved - from Bert "I had a magazine/fanclub that was called : This Is Not The Way Ian Planned it!! (Yes, complete with the exclamation marks).
Then there was the Official Dutch Jethro Tull Fanclub. In 2003 this fanclub was nearly dead, no magazines anymore and no activities. The chairman would like to finish it but we got through a merger and from that point I became the chairman of the Dutch Jethro Tull Fanclub and the fanclub magazine got the name "This Is Not The Way Ian Planned it!!" How did I came to this name??
Well, I started as a magazine to review all about bootlegs. So, something where Ian don't make money with...... and that's not the way Ian planned it............. Understand??"Reckon we do Bert
