Probably a good topic for it's own thread...how to be objective about our own fascination with Tull and how it presents to civilians....I mean...I try to be fair if someone tells me about the gigs, bootlegs, memorabilia and memories they have ammassed thru single-minded obsession with some group or another....but i don't know if 'respect' is what i project when they're talking about some band that doesn't do much for me...I guess questions of legitimacy are absurd and objective...I mean, does it matter if someone is hooked on acceptable objects of worship like the stones, beatles, who, dead, floyd, zappa, dylan....or lesser lights like styx or Ble oyster cult or...well you know, ...and what is Tull....a half step below the stones and zeps or a half step above the kansases and lynyrd skynyrds.....oh, and by the way...who cares?
There are a great many folks of the "grey surfer" generation who have a half memory of seeing Tull on tv both here in Blighty and in parts foreign, who still today don't realise they are still going strong. I gave one of our technical bods a fairly common Tull bootleg to copy (Ticketron) and he was amazed that after all these years the concerts still existed in one form or another.
Can't stand the "evangelical" fans who insist that their choice of music is the one everybody must follow - I have a healthy "respect" (that word again) for people who, for instance, have a massive collection of Simple Minds/Big Country/Tom Petty and even Bryan Adams et al, and fair play to them.
But as a follow-up to that interview I did it's amazing just how many people who I work with, have a good knowledge of the band and who have many of their albums, either on vinyl or cd. I haven't had the comments "didn't know they were still going" or "he's the guy who stands on one leg and plays the flute" yet. But there's still time.
