Happy Birthday Mr Lou Reed! NLewis Allan "Lou" Reed (born March 2, 1942) is an American rock musician, songwriter, and photographer. He is best known as guitarist, vocalist, and principal songwriter of The Velvet Underground, and for his solo career, which has spanned several decades. Though the Velvet Underground were a commercial failure in the late 1960s, the group has gained a considerable cult following in the years since its demise and has gone on to become one of the most widely cited and influential bands of the era. As the Velvet Underground's principal songwriter, Reed wrote about subjects of personal experience that rarely had been examined so openly in rock and roll, including sexuality and drug culture. read more on Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Reed

One of the very best acts of the Isle Of Wight pop festival in 1970 were Taste. Think of all the best adjectives you can and that's a rough idea how good they were, dear old Rory played his socks off - yee gods what a loss he was.

I'm in with the happy Birthday to Lou.....integrity, truth, honesty and tougher than Keith when you look up close...glad he's having golden years as a hip society darling New Yorker with Laurie Anderson at his side.....when I had a hip avant garde girlfriend in about 1995, I proposed we do Halloween as Ian and Laurie Anderson...but she was too hip for that.

Just for me, if i could have a victorious fistfight with any man on the planet, Lou Reed might well be that first choice. Like to beat that smirk right off his face, he NEVER earned it. I believe he was one of the signposts to get off that hippie track, (which vastly more than any of these other "movements", provided real cultural nutrition) and romanticizing heroin use, while delivering a virtual zero in terms of music by comparison to heroin users of the prior decades in music, be it Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Yardbird Parker, just about be easier to name the ones who did not, Gillespie, Roach, Ellington. Still waiting for the musical genius of the Velvet Underground to reveal itself to me, I see NY attitude, and not the kind I have a deep respect for, the foppish SOHO type through the prism of the VASTLY over rated Andy Warhol, (another guy who I think needed a serious beating). Yeah Sweet Jane is an ok tune. But their genius is well less than staggering.

Lou's in my top 5....I never got the velvets but his solo stuff, especially between about 80 and 95 hits me as honest, novelistic/cinematic write of what you know...he came thru first and second acts that would have destroyed lesser man and became a mensch while sticking to his belief that a few chords are enough but that doesn't mean you have sing about wanting to hold a hand...

Happy Birthday Nobody Special! Always welcome your well considered posts, which manage to give an honest clear personal assessment without veering into character assassination as I have seen elsewhere. Big health buddy!
