I feel lucky to have traveled all over the fast-fading '2nd world' when i was in my teens and twenties...Poland, Czeckoslovakia, hungary and the USSR in the late 70'ies was like a magical trip into the thirties or earlier...horse drawn carts, cities that smelled like coal and especially the creepy WWII rooted border routines....looking out a stationary train window for hours while armed soldiers went through their scary routines where eastern steel was separated from western gold gave me a real taste of how the first 50 years of the twentieth century felt. It's the stuff of history,legend... almost or is it a sign of getting old? I don't think so * I feel sorry for kids who won't experience the things I did and the sad part is that I really don't think they have great alternatives. * I'm arguing with myself ........pass the pills

Ditto on those sentiments. And The Dog. I am in with both feet Graham. Cool first name, but The Dog, that is high esteemed, and earned.

Thanks folks, much appreciated. You are generous and kind. Trips around the sun over the last while have not been rocky, nor all a sweet deal of an easy skate, it's been like a guitar with a phaser being controlled by a monkey looking the other way. While I play creative things with book research, music and whatever, my world is out of phase with shall we say "the culture on the way out", while I try to support the culture on the way in. Understanding what's going on in the world, while I also keep trying to understand my own best choices in life, is a game that cannot be avoided. One must play. As the Mayans and Egyptians point out, such transitions may last thousands of years if not at least a couple hundred, so we've got to believe in ourselves, our experience and our values, while we push forward with progress and let what needs to fade, fade away. Be kind in this life, we're in for times of change and challenge. Empathy is the wise one's rule book. Sometimes I don't want to edit............

Agree with my two esteemed Tull collegues and I have a question for Mr Shock;
Do you live in the middle of nowhere surrounded by an abundance of wild and natural beauty?

Abundant wilderness is a short drive away, I have the Rocky Mountains an hour west of here, but in Calgary, nature has been predominantly ejected.

Sounds like Denver when i was growing up...beauty at the feet of the Rockies but slowly turned into Texas's northernmost city.

Thanks Bunkerfan and Broadsword.
I'll celebrate tonight with a couple of pints of Doombar real ale and I think I'll forget about the candles on the cake - the family will use just one, rather like those large church candles that you can buy ;D
