Hello everybody, This is my first posting on the forum, so please be gentle. I've always been interested in the artwork of the Christmas Album because the image on the front cover 'looks like' it's taken from an existing painting. It looks like a painting by a Dutch master of landscape painting such as, if I can give an example, van Ruisdael......or somebody like that (with an image of Ian in the bottom left-hand corner superimposed on to it). Of course, I could be (and probably am) completely wrong in this assumption, but I'd be interested if anybody had any thoughts on this. I think it is a great album cover which simply oozes festive feeling. Thanks in anticipation.

You'll meet some great folks here, all with their different thoughts about the band. I look forward to reading your posts. I don't know much about the artwork to the Christmas album. I agree that it looks "Dutch" and I did trawl the web to try and find it but to no avail. I did hear that it was an "in house" job at the record company which is plausible but other than that I drew a blank. If you do find out anything more do let us know. Again, glad to have you on board. Cheers Maddog

The painting is a detail of "Skaters on a Frozen Pond" (1880) by Dutch painter Frederick Marianus Kruseman. There has been some cropping and retouching of the lower margin, whiting out the tops of the skaters, and the flute player logo has been added on the lower left. Kruseman painted many such scenes, including winter scenes, with the same color palate.
