Rather than an album by album review I’ll approach this differently:
This was, Stand up, Benefit
Early Tull
Aqualung, Brick, Passion, War child, Minstrel, TOTRRTYTD, Songs, Heavy horses
Classic Tull. While Stormwatch belongs here I don’t think it quite makes the grade. Don’t get me wrong, I love SW but it just has that cold feeling about it, the cracks are there.
A, Broadsword
Radical directional change which I enjoy with Tull. I can see why many fans dropped out at A though.
Walk into light, Under wraps.
I personally feel WITL is the better album. It just runs along so smoothly not unlike a train and it’s the perfect first IA solo album. UW’s is a hard one and for the fans who hung on since ‘A’ this was probably the last straw.
Crest, Rock Island
I love this period. The mature rock. Not raw like the 70’s band, more clean but one of my favourite Tull eras. I wish they had made more albums at this time. A sound I think would still work today. Bring back Peggy!!!
Catfish, RTB
Catfish was another shift and a bridge between RI and RTB. Interesting albums, glad they were made. Ian’s voice really showing its limitations although still great to hear him.
Dot com, Slob
Dot com, not an album I’m that drawn to. It just seems to lack the magic.
I think the problem here is Ian seems to have decided to split the acoustic rock marriage up. He begins to push himself as a solo artist keeping the heavy rock stuff for Tull. The trouble is it’s that blend of acoustic/rock that makes Tull so magical. Somehow if you separate the two they are less than they are together.
Had Dot com and Slob been one Jethro Tull album we would probably have had one of the best Jethro Tull albums in the catalogue. I do enjoy Slob though.
Rupi’s dance, Christmas
If Slob was a 10, Rupi is a 7. More of the same. Again, it should have been a Tull album. Christmas album was fun but no replacement for a new album.
This leaves me with one left out. Yes Divinities which I loved. This, like WITL is what an Ian Anderson solo album should be. Ian has always be the acoustic guy in a rock band. That is what Jethro Tull is. His choice to go solo and separate the crucial elements was in my opinion a mistake. A solo album should be something different you wouldn’t expect Tull to be.
Will there be any further albums? God I hope so but Ian is clearly not that bothered about moving things on. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
