I find it hard to believe that Ian became so proficient on acoustic guitar and flute in a matter of 1-2 years on his own. For example in his bands previous to Tull he was always listed and just the vocalsst or singer. Others played guitars, etc. Just wond'ring.
Also, did he actually write the music, as in technical transcription terms. Again, how could one do this without at least some formal, or informal training/lessons/ mentoring! Thanks if anyone has info!

He doesn't read music which is why he carries a small portable recorder with him to put musical ideas down on tape/md. Dee Palmer used to write out the music for IA's songs during his tenure with the band and lately John O'Hara has fulfilled that roll.

He must have practiced like a mad man on the flute.... or he is just a natural (probably) because on the flute the right embouchure (mouth-technique) is everything, and without a teacher to point you in the right direction (as lip-shapes etc vary) you can really have a hard time even producing sound. I read somewhere that IA couldnt produce sound on his newly bought flute for the first 2 months while others could (which is normal) so he must have quite a bit of patience too!
