JETHRO TULL - ACOUSTIC LIVE 1987 "Serenade To A Cuckoo" and "Skating Away" Acoustic 1987 BEST OF: Jethro Tull - first Unplugged in history? LINK If the MTV Unplugged series was officially launched in 1989, Jethro Tull was probably the first group to offer an "unplugged" on the American network, without it really being planned. It was in 1987. The band's frontman, Ian Anderson , would later recall: We were one of the first bands to come to the MTV studio in New York to play acoustic. Actually, we just had to do an interview but we had some guitars with us. While we were there, we were like, 'well, let's play something for you'. And they said 'oh, we're not equipped for that'. And I said 'give us a little time'. And so we played some stuff. They were really impressed afterwards and they said 'We would like the next bands that come to play to offer us the same thing' and they added 'well, the next time you come to town, come back and offer us some other titles'. Of course, we never did, because they never asked us. And soon after MTV launched their 'MTV Unplugged' series. So I think we may have unknowingly allowed rock bands to play acoustic sessions on MTV.
