Ian twirling his flute. Tartan waistcoats, jodhpurs and riding boots. Big long shaggy beards. Giant balloons. A new album being promoted.

Miss the balloons Always wondered why they didn't use small party ones, just as a laugh, in these days of belt tightening and credit crunch marlarky. Not sure about the long shaggy beards. As a beard exponent myself I've found that as you get older, the beard gets shorter. One thing's for sure, I'm not going for the gotee look

Being allowed to stand anywhere I wanted too - and being able too! for the whole show Saying after the show "Right lets go for a curry before we go to the party and disappear for a few days"The over the top stage sets - go on Ian !! it would be called irony now ( even more so) and be uber cool and vintage

The first song being a stunning piece from the latest release ( i'm a poet and didn't know it)
Black Sunday, Strange Avenues, the epics ( Brick, Play) and even Roots to Branches...by far NOT the best cut on the album....how did the Stormwatch gig start? was it 'Something on the Move'...a weak song, or was that the next tour?

"Stormwatch " started with "F Dutchman"
Hey guys, I'm trying to be a good boy and restrain myself from honestly answering the thread question, becuse you all probably KNOW what I, Tommie, miss most, right?

Another example of east coast privilege...when that tour got to SF ( days after Glascock died) Flying Dutchman was not in the set...let alone the opener....i think it opened with something like mary or hunting girl...they did play a few new ones: orion, home, dark ages and sumfin on the move.....but i know earlier gigs had more fresh songs

I miss the spontaneous humour. In the good old days every night was different, now you can talk along with the "jokes".

At least on this solo tour IA didn't do the Cliff Richard joke which must have done the rounds of the last 3 UK tours.
Miss seeing old friends at Tull concerts, especially in London. They've either given up going, can't get to them due to illness, old age etc. or moved to exotic places. One Tull fan I know was in the UK and managed to get to see the IA "solo" tour at Kings Lynn - he now lives and works in China.

The balloons! I want them back!!!! And some new material, although this has been offset for me somewhat by every tour having one or two songs thrown in that I've either never heard live before or haven't for a long time. Other than that it's all good for me

i don't think they ever played FD in the US...maybe a very few dates, early in the 79 /80 tour in England...it shows up all the time on setlists and boot contents cuz Giddings used to play the intro---about 90 seconds---on a few tours

They've got this set list for the second show: 12/10/79 Madison Square Garden NYC, NY. USA Famously, Ian was hit in the eye by a rose thrown from the audience. Intro/Dark Ages, Home, Orion, Dun Ringill, Something's On The Move, Aqualung, King Henry's Madrigal/Drum Solo, Heavy Horses/Flute Solo (incl. Bourée), Songs From The Wood, Jams O'Donnell's Jigs, Thick As A Brick, Too Old To Rock'N'Roll..., Cross-Eyed Mary, Minstrel In The Gallery/Locomotive Breath/Dambusters March/Minstrel In The Gallery (reprise) Is this the show you're talking about? You've got me interested Maddog

You've got me interested Maddog I guess they switched it up. I was at the show the night before. I had great seats in the 1st loge. I had imagined Dark Ages to be the perfect opening for the show and was pretty surprised when it was Something's on the Move.

TM, that's the wonderful thing about Tull - expect the unexpected ;D That '79 set list was something else wasn't it?
Overall I do miss "Black Sunday", from the following year, in any set list. A good opener and great song
Pick up my feet and kick off my lethargy Down to the gate with the old mood upon me Get out and chase the small immortality born in the minute of my next returning Impatient feet tapping and cigarette burning Homecoming one day too soon

In SF it was SOTM...with dark Ages a little deeper in the set...the ministry does show Flying Dutchman as an opener in Toronto not long brefore the NYC shows so it's possible that it was played or even an opener later that tour...but i still think Tommie is.....is....is...a little bit confused.....Anyway: Black Sunday was the best opener EVER...as proven by the slipstream video.

Ian twirling, gesturing, and otherwise abusing his flute. Along those lines I also miss the energy, especially JHH prancing around the stage.
As for great openings, Black Sunday and Strange Avenues were tremendous, but both fall just behind the Passion Play opening for me. Of course, being as that was my first Tull show and I had no idea what to expect, probably skews my impression somewhat.

I agree heartily with the obvious (see above) The intro to passion Play was the best start to any concert, or, in fact, anything in the history of the universe not involving exchange of bodily fluids with me as a participant...and even that only includes a very, few cases...not all of them. Passion Play was my first gig as well and the high point of my otherwise mittyesque life (not without a few notable triumphs...and not without a few of them taking place without alcohol).

If memory serves me well TAAB opened my first concert in 1972. But I was in a trance and just awe struck at being there so it could have been the first lines of "Donald where's yer troosers?"

"Donald where's yer troosers' was played in the medely with Flying Dutchman and The already discussed cover of 'If I were a Rich Man'. I think it was in late 79 or early 80.
