Unwrapped the new album - stuck it on the deck ;D lit cigarette or whatever ;D sat back and ...............wait a minute......
Minstrel in the Gallery - the song
Disappointed. Didn't like the first song and still don't . Many reasons - we all talk about the great diversity in sound we've had over the years but sometimes the shock from one album to the next was a bit too much. It just didn't gel for me. I'll listen again for more concise points.

Where are you coming up with all these interesting questions? (ie, what's in those ciggies you're smoking?? ;D)
I can't even manage one decent thread, and you're just firing them off...

Tend to agree with you re Minstrel the song and to some extent the album, though I have had listening exceptions, particularly and I think uniformly dislike its ending. Have always very much liked that spoken word thing at the beginning though, particularly finding out in recent years what was actually being said, though I have forgot, surely easily accessible on the net I guess. Still 17 still stands tall as my least favorite Tull track though I am sure there would be challengers. Even in their very worst tracks I nearly always find something to like.

There are many songs that needed to be spun several times before I started enjoying them. Minstrel though, was not one of them. I've always liked that one.
Rock Island is one that comes to mind. The whole album took a while for me. But perhaps that had more to do with it following on the heels of Crest.

Hi Blue I can't take credit for The best Opening /End song that was Maddog and Storm. The What Needed a Few Listens was Steel's idea. I came up with The Most Romantic one tho As far as the funny cigs - I'm joking honest The only indulgence I have now is a second cup of green tea and a chunky kit kat

Well having been introduced to Tull via BatB I guess for me that moment was ........ the whole of Aqualung! Obviously it grew on me By the time I got hold of the likes of TAAB, APP and Minstrel I was used to (and liked) the changes in style and no longer expected carbon copies of Broadsword! I think overall the album that took longest to get into was Warchild, and it's still not one I listen to much.

TOTRORTYTD was a drop off a cliff, following the Aqualung thru Minstrel hot streak...but I hear it now as a very well planned and executed piece of art...lacking only a standout, classic track....which the title cut, is not.

Son the song irks me and always has (despite the fact it's on Benefit) I appreciate the lyrics and energy of the song and the passion mind you it was probably meant to sound slightly grating and irritating - so cheers once again to the genius of Anderson.
